AHL Weekend Recap: Grand Rapids Griffins Come Up Pointless This Weekend

The Grand Rapids Griffins ended the weekend pointless as the Rockford IceHogs swept the weekend series. Rockford won Friday 4-1 and then again on Saturday 2-1.

Friday: Grand Rapids Griffins vs. Rockford IceHogs 

The Griffins on Friday welcomed the IceHogs to Van Andel Arena. The IceHogs got the scoring started with just over six minutes left as Gerry Mayhew scored his 13 of the season. Kevin Korchinski added an assist. In the second it was all Rockford. Jackson Cates, Andreas Athanasiou, and Zach Sanford all scored goals to make it 4-0 IceHogs. In the third with over 6.5 minutes gone the Griffins broke the shutout. Hunter Johannes scored his second of the season. Grand Rapids couldn’t stage a comeback and lost 4-1. Sebastian Cossa for the start going two periods stopping 16 of the 20 shots he faced. Jan Bednar got the third period and stopped all ten shots he faced. Drew Commesso got the start for Rockford and stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced. 

Saturday: Grand Rapids Griffins vs. Rockford IceHogs 

On Saturday Grand Rapids faced Rockford again. Neither team scored in the first 20 minutes. Rockford did break through in the second period as Paul Ludwinski scored his fifth of the season just over two minutes in. The IceHogs got another goal as Samuel Savoie scored a shorthanded goal just over three minutes later. In the third period, the Griffins got on the board as Amadeus Lombardi scored his 13th of the season. Shai Buium and Sheldon Dries added assists. That would be it and the Griffins lose 2-1. Bednar got the start and stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced. Commesso got the start and stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced.

Next Week: 

The Griffins lone game next week comes on Wednesday against the Texas Stars at Van Andel Arena at 7:00 PM EST. The Griffins are 2-1-2-0 against Texas this season averaging 3.2 goals per game while allowing 3.4 goals per game.
