0:18
hello welcome to her Wildside hockey podcast I am your Hostess Mickey AKA
0:24
hockey she wrote and boy do we have a lot to talk about today because the last
0:29
two days I'm recording this on Saturday morning is the tale of two teams uh both of the teams are named to
0:37
the Minnesota Wild and both of the games were in Florida but
0:44
somehow totally different teams it's almost astonishing so we're g to Jump Right In
0:51
we're going to talk about Tampa Bay first now I will say for the most part wild played great the first and second
0:58
period they really they stuck with Tampa Bay they did what they could um I really
1:04
enjoyed that John Hines put Dakota mermis and Damon hunt in and while I
1:09
know that Damon hunt makes a few mistakes here and there I feel like he's really
1:16
improving and I do feel like um he's a great choice to have in um Dakota mermis
1:22
has done really well and earned his spot and it was just nice to see both of them
1:28
in now this whole game was I think the announcer was described it as battle hockey and I feel like that's kind of
1:34
what the Wild play all the time but they were right it was just so back and
1:39
forth and then you know people were starting to get feisty we had Brock
1:45
Faber who actually took a crosschecking penalty which is not like him but he
1:52
like I said he was feisty um part of it is that Hegel who he uh cross checked
2:00
really sold it and kind of flopped so hard that he ended up injuring himself I'm not sure if he hit his face on the
2:06
ice or on his teammate stick that was in front of him but um The Flop was what
2:11
hurt him and not the cross check so poor Faber has to go over to the box and he was so confused he does
2:21
not know what a penalty box is and he does not understand cuz he even had a 4-minute penalty he does not understand
2:27
what do you mean I'm not going to play for 4 minutes like fa does not
2:33
understand a break he does not get a break I feel like he's kind of like
2:40
Capri off in that instance where they're just like back on the ice like nope I need I'm back on the ice like I've I've
2:47
taken a 10-sec 10-sec rest here let's go um and in this point I think this is
2:54
the point in time where the announcers because this was on national TV the announcers were talking all about how
3:00
you know seven years from now uh fa is probably going to be the captain of the team he's going to play for 15 years in
3:06
Minnesota for the Wild and like I was like oh that's so great I love that they're talking about him because you
3:12
are so right fa is doing amazing and he's definitely going to play here for Forever on this at the same time my
3:19
brother text me and he was completely peeved that they did not mention that
3:25
Faber is from Minnesota like yeah they said that he would play for Minnesota and they said
3:31
that he would be the captain of Minnesota but they did not mention that he is from
3:37
Minnesota that was apparently just a big sticking point for my brother but then um right the second
3:45
period there's this confusing Tampa Bay goal I think it was second period there's this confusing Tampa Bay goal
3:52
that the puck basically goes in as someone is stepping onto the ice out of
3:57
the Penalty Box and then they went back and forth for quite a while trying to figure out is this a power play goal or
4:03
is this an even strength goal and I think it even changed in the app back and forth and they did finally say power
4:09
play goal but it I mean it's kind of a good question because you know what do you do at that point do you like try to
4:15
watch a camera of the per The Penalty Box and a camera of the goal line and then like see where they
4:23
intersect I don't know it was just this very confusing instance but again for first
4:29
and second period for the wild were great they go into the third period they're down 43 but that is they're
4:37
within one they are doing great and then
4:42
Middleton scored a great goal he is now at a career high in goals points and
4:50
almost in assists I haven't checked after the Florida Panthers game he might be have beaten that already too uh but
4:59
what I love is that he was basically left completely alone in the front of the net like the Defenders the lightning
5:07
players they're covering zukar they're covering Rossy they're covering Capri off and Middleton just skates right up
5:13
the ice and just right in like they're just like oh midon like he's a
5:19
stay-at-home Defender we don't really have to pay attention to him right now let's focus on the superstars and that
5:26
was a mistake I did like that right after for that Kevin weeks uh at the desk was
5:32
talking about how much Minnesota loves Jake Middleton and honestly how can you
5:37
not love the man I've gone on about this before so I'm not going to you know I'm not going to stick around in this point
5:44
very long but just not only does he have this great personality but Middleton has
5:51
kind of come onto this team and just his play has just he is doing so good you know when
6:00
he came on the team the only thing that I knew when he was traded to Minnesota
6:05
was just that he was kind of a tough guy tough guy Defender doesn't score and
6:10
look at him now he's playing top minutes he's playing next to you know usually
6:17
Spurgeon but Spurgeon is out which we'll get to um he has played next to Rodin
6:23
he's played next to faor I mean Minnesota has this reputation of kind of being like um almost like a rehab for
6:30
players meaning that when they are are slumping or maybe not doing so well a lot of them they will come to Minnesota
6:36
and all of a sudden they are just doing great look at Philip gustofson look at Jake
6:41
Middleton look at maroon and bagoan I mean it's just I I like that Minnesota I
6:48
don't know if it's because people feel comfortable here and obviously this isn't for everybody it's not like every single person that comes to Minnesota
6:55
this happens to um I'm thinking of Tyson Jo which
7:00
I miss him but it's just it's nice to know that maybe they feel so comfortable that they
7:06
are able to try out new roles like Middleton uh trying scoring you know and just trying to be more offensive and
7:13
just doing things that they wouldn't have been comfortable doing somewhere
7:19
else but after that the whole game went downhill
7:24
and yeah that was rough the end of the game was rough so right before the Tampa
7:31
Bay game the Minnesota Wild announced that Spurgeon was out for the rest of
7:37
the season so everybody was already in a bad mood and then with the way the play went
7:44
downhill in the third period it was just it was just like what is going on
7:51
and I feel really bad for Jared's Spurgeon he has to have first he's
7:56
having surgery on his left hip and then four weeks later having back
8:02
surgery like this poor man that's rough that is rough either
8:09
either one of those surgeries were would be rough but having to have both of them they're saying that he should be back
8:15
you know and and good to go before training camp next season which is good to hear but that's still a big loss on
8:21
the blue line and a big loss with the captain you know so they're going to have to have some other you know I know
8:27
that you know Felino steps up I know that G steps up they're just going to have to have some other um voices in the
8:33
locker room that make sure to kind of take that role there was one confusing point in
8:39
time here where Michael Rossi scored a goal and the Minnesota Wild Twitter page
8:47
posted it with the caption Coco
8:53
Chanel and I was so utterly confused at first I actually went to look up Coco
8:59
Chanel's Wikipedia page cuz like I was like I don't think she's from Austria is she because I thought okay maybe they
9:06
were trying to make a a reference like that although if they were going to do that isn't Arnold Schwarzenegger Austrian you'd think they go for him
9:12
that seems like a more likely match anyway she's not um KOCO is from France
9:18
uh and also her famous perfume which I was like I don't think it's 23 but maybe she made a 23 perfume no it is number
9:25
five finally someone explained to me that they call him
9:34
maroko and once that was pointed out it seemed like that was just so obvious that I'm not sure why I didn't get
9:42
that but just the initial confusion was just baffling to
9:49
me um we also had Freddy G injured so again we're kind of we're just on this
9:56
parade of injuries still um because there's even more I'm going to get to in the next game but so we had Spurgeon
10:02
before the game goodro get hurt during the game um one thing I'm going to touch on
10:09
is that between the two Florida games here is that there has been so much
10:14
speculation about Mark Andre flurry and what is going to happen at the trade deadline and I know Bill Garen is
10:22
wanting them to make a big push to make the playoffs and you know I have my road colored glasses on and I'm going to
10:28
agree with them I think it is doable I think they have to really push hard but
10:33
it could be doable it is possible but people are saying you know
10:40
so if they get to the trade deadline and there is not a way to get to a playoff
10:46
spot Would Not only would Bill Garen Trade Mark Andre flurry but to trade him
10:52
flurry would have to agree to wave his no trade clause or no move Clause it's a full Mo no move clause
10:59
and while that's kind of an interesting like thought uh problem you know like a to to
11:07
just to think about where he could go I'm going to go ahead and just think
11:12
say that I don't think he would wave the no move claw um one of the reasons that
11:18
he signed for two years here in Minnesota is because he was tired of moving his family around and he didn't
11:23
want to just do a one-year contract he didn't want to have to you know he was traded to Minnesota he didn't want to
11:29
have to go to another team after that you know he is 39 years old he does not
11:34
want to be moving around all the time but if the right team comes
11:42
knocking would he agreed to move you know if there is a team that
11:49
has a young goalie who needs a veteran presence as a tandem flurry is not going to move to be
11:57
a backup he he's a backup here he likes it he's good he's not going to move to be a backup somewhere else but if
12:03
there's a young go that needs a tandem would he it's an interesting
12:10
thing um so I actually wrote an article and I kind of I found five teams that
12:16
are struggling with Goal tending um and they're teams that are in playoff
12:23
contention so I am going to link that in the show notes and if you want to take a
12:29
look go ahead and like I said it who knows but let's move on to the Florida
12:36
Panthers game because this one is a little happier uh it has its up and
12:42
downs but right off the bat right off the bat uh Mark Andre flurry goes behind
12:48
the net to get a puck and Lockwood from the Panthers is going around the back of the
12:55
net JW and he ends up clipping flurry
13:02
flurry as Lun Annie was saying on the broadcast you don't hit a goalie so
13:09
goalies are not prepared to be hit you know other positions you're going to
13:14
you're going to know that if you're over by the boards it is possible for you to get hit you know that if there's someone coming it's possible they're going to
13:21
hit you goalies do not do that because that's not okay but lock would ends up
13:29
clipping him and flurry is not expecting it spun around and goes down he looks
13:36
like he's in pain and he does manage to get up so at that point it was kind of like okay great
13:42
but it okay this and this Collision was a total accident I mean obviously you know that this kid did not mean to do
13:50
that but at the same time it's his responsibility to make sure that he
13:56
doesn't hit the but as soon as he Clips
14:02
flurry there's a a video from kind of the side angle B
14:09
Goan raced over throws all of his stuff down grabs him in a headlock and starts
14:15
just wailing on him and I am not I'm not someone who like oh I love
14:23
violence um I don't think many people are like that but there was some something about the
14:29
idea that no you do not touch
14:36
him and bagoan has made a splash here in Minnesota he has been a really good
14:43
presence in the defensive core when we have you know been losing players left and right he's been pretty steady he's
14:50
been and he's been physical and it's funny because I don't think he's fought anyone so far when he was here but I can
14:57
see why I would not want to go up against bagoan he is he was just like
15:08
scary but so Lockwood goes to the Penalty
15:13
Box he comes out they go you know um I
15:18
don't think there was a face off after that but he comes out and immediately fights
15:24
duim Dam when he fights he
15:29
he usually loses I mean we love you do we won but a lot of times he ends up losing or kind of tying you know kind of
15:35
like oh okay good game he beat the tar out of this
15:42
boy like this poor kid he left the game after
15:48
duim wailed on him down to the ice and he did not come back he played 20 like
15:55
26 36 seconds of the game and he did not come back
16:00
and in a way again I hate to like cheer for a fight like that but like Jim was
16:07
bringing it and then as if this is not enough um
16:15
gajic had been in the Box comes out and fights
16:26
Lockwood oh no Fel was in the Box this is getting so confusing because let me tell you we're not even halfway through
16:33
the first period at this point in in my notes like there's just there's so much going on so Felino had been in the Box
16:39
he gets out of the box he's skating across to the to the bench and gich is like hey let's go so Felino drops the NS
16:46
they fight Felino turns around and goes right back to the box for another five and again so this is halfway
16:52
through the first we are 10 minutes into this game and we have had three fights
16:59
during this time we also did have kill caprisa score a power play goal um which
17:05
is nice this is the first time that he actually scored a goal since he came back from injury and it was like a classic vintage KK 97
17:12
goal so then Minnesota goes on the PK
17:18
again it's it's a back and forth this is it's been all special teams for the most part like there's hardly ever any five
17:24
on five so while they are on this PK they have have Marcus
17:30
Felino Brock Faber and Brandon duim all just hanging
17:35
out in the penalty box and it was a little bit like Mama moose has got her two boys she's got the little baby boy
17:42
and then she's got the big bro you know and they're all just hanging together
17:48
watching the game from the box at one point then Marcus Johansson
17:55
goes down with a really crappy hit to the
18:01
head and he he left the ice he did come back in the third which was very good to see
18:08
but it was a little scary the way that his head snapped back but it was very sweet Brandon do
18:15
after beating the tar out of another player um was like escorting the medic
18:21
over to Jojo like holding the medic's arm and like it was very sweet and then he helped escort JoJo back to the bench
18:28
so that was all just yeah we're in the second period
18:35
now derer is hip checked so hard that he goes head over heels and leaves the ice
18:41
down the tunnel and then so at this point the
18:47
Wilder up 41 Florida decides to pull bosski out of
18:54
net because he has let in four goals on only like I think it was like 12 shots
18:59
or something just not great and then weirdly enough at the
19:05
same exact time Mark Andre flurry leaves the ice now Anthony Lanta on the broadcast
19:12
was joking that this is a the goalies are um he's showing solidarity it's a show of solidarity for them to both
19:19
leave um but there was a lot of what is going on um someone was suggesting that maybe
19:25
they were going to play flurry on Sunday they wanted to arrest him and it it was like I don't think so and unfortunately he was injured when
19:34
Lockwood ran into him right at the beginning of the game um apparently he tried to play through it he was doing
19:39
okay you know he was he looked okay but I think at that point he was just like I need to I need to be done because if I
19:46
keep playing I'm going to injure myself more so he pulled himself this is the first time everybody
19:54
commented this um all of the announcers everybody was talking about this is the
19:59
first time that they have ever seen both goalies Switched at
20:06
once and at this point you know gipson comes in and I was a little worried
20:12
because he just you know he he came back from injury and he's had a hard time getting back
20:18
into the rhythm of it and he's even said that you know he knows that he's
20:24
trying and at this point it's just like the wild can't have nice things there is
20:31
just a stream of injuries you know so they announced that flurry's not coming back Connor derer is
20:36
not coming back and actually just before I came to record they record they recorded they reported that derer is on
20:43
injured reserve and he will not be available for a few weeks they are recalling Jake
20:48
Luchini which good for Luchini because he did play well when he was up here but just another another person out we have
20:54
not heard about flurry I do not know if they'll end up having to recall
20:59
wallstead or what we'll get there I guess um so once again there is another
21:08
fight lomberg fights duim for when do him fought Lockwood and
21:15
sent him off the ice now this is when there was a really
21:20
ill-timed interview on Bali Sports Kevin gorg was talking to um a Twins player
21:27
and I'm sorry I don't follow baseball so I don't know who he is he seemed really
21:33
nice and he was like certainly saying good things and he was like excited to be at the game and that's
21:38
great but this fight is happening there's a split screen and there's
21:43
there's Kevin gorg trying to talk to this baseball player and then the fight is happening on the other screen and so
21:49
it's small you can't quite see what's going on and then all a sudden the wild have two penalties like not just the
21:56
fighting and then they say there was a medic or a coach on the ice but they never went back to try and
22:03
show us who was on the ice or not a medic I'm
22:09
sorry manager manager or coach on the ice I still don't know what
22:16
happened uh someone was on the ice that wasn't supposed to be and I guess we will just never know it was just bound
22:21
to be a mystery they're building a mystery so the third period starts
22:27
that's right folks we are only through two periods there has been so much happening injuries fights goals special
22:35
teams Gore and wild they're up four to two which is great Gus is in net and Florida
22:43
scores two back to back to put them within one the score is
22:51
5'4 and I don't know exactly how but something flipped a switch in Guston and
22:57
he found his stride he was back on his game he had an amazing glove save with
23:04
48 seconds left of the game it looked like a sure goal it looked like they were going to tie it up
23:10
in with 48 seconds left and Gus was like mm no way and his glove save was
23:16
actually the NHL play of the night and I was like yes because guson has been
23:22
trying so hard to get back from his injury and after Florida scored on him like
23:29
three times he found whatever had been missing and then just to really put the
23:36
icing on the cake Hartman somehow Banks the puck off of the boards and straight
23:43
into the empty net 64 the Wild win now this is a completely
23:50
different wild team then who played the third period against the lightning at least it seems
23:56
that way it seems that way way but the stats of this game are
24:04
crazy Florida had 38 shots on goal to Minnesota's
24:10
24 they also were commenting and this is something that I mean it blows my mind
24:16
and I've said Brock Faber is a hockey robot in the best way
24:22
possible because Faber he played at the University of Minnesota he never ran the
24:27
power play there he never did that he stepped into the NHL and he is running
24:32
the top power play unit as a rookie and succeeding he had three points on the
24:39
night with three assists I just I know there's been some other areas where he's
24:45
been slowing down a little bit probably just because of like how much he's had to play and the fatigue but he is still
24:52
he's um in third place for points I think for rookies he's in first first
24:57
place for assists for rookies and he is just clipping
25:04
along the Special Teams both had amazing stats which is not something that has
25:10
been happening lately the PK was 100% they killed all four
25:17
penalties and one difference that they pointed out is that Ryan Harman got a
25:22
spot back on the penalty kill he had not been on the penalty kill for a while and you know he said that he had just been
25:28
kind of waiting to be back on there because he you know he enjoys it and
25:34
they put Hines put him on the penalty kill and all the penalties were killed
25:40
so hopefully that has been something that will continue um but the power play
25:46
also they scored on four out of the five power plays that they had that's
25:54
83% I feel like in the past it's been like 20 25 30 like just pathetic kind of
26:00
power play percentages 83% and then we've got Carill caprisa
26:07
scored two goals so like I said earlier he had not scored a goal since he came back from injury he had a bunch of
26:13
assists so he's still racking up points but he had not scored goals and he scored two both of them just vintage KK
26:21
97 looking like himself he now has 15 points in the last 10 games he has seven
26:28
goals now and eight assists the other goals that he
26:33
had were no those were before the injury sorry I got confused for a minute anyway
26:39
The Vibes of this game were incredible besides the
26:45
injuries which I feel like just a fact of life for the Minnesota Wild Now The
26:51
Vibes were amazing in my recap which I will link below I'll link both Recaps that I wrote
26:57
below um I gave the highest Vibe score that I have given so far for this game against
27:05
the Panthers I mean it was just offthe wall um moving on so we're I'm going to
27:12
close this out pretty soon but I still have my I have a little short feuture considerations in a bag of pucks my
27:18
miscellaneous section first of all I I'm kind of I kind of love that the
27:25
wild are really leading into this carps off they started leaning into it last year now they are this year they've got
27:32
a ticket package coming up where you get a shirt that looks like Jake Middleton
27:40
shirtless I I would love to shake the hand of whoever thought of making these shirts because it just is so incredibly
27:50
wacky and the fact that they agreed to it was just even better I love it and
27:55
then this morning Nordy you know good old mascot Nordy puts out a video of him
28:01
shortless running down the street in the cold and this all kind of ties into uh
28:08
they dropped another Duke Canon commercial with Jake Middleton earlier in the week here and of course he has
28:15
tarps off for the entire commercial but my favorite part was um a friend of mine on social media posted that they had
28:21
watched it without sound and they were wondering what in the world was going on because it was basically just shirtless
28:28
Jake Middleton and he was like pointing to Hair Care Products shaking a salad
28:33
and then riding a motorcycle and again you know Middleton
28:41
like we love you in Minnesota and I want to update I was talking about the uh Philadelphia
28:50
Flyers uh dog mask that they wear for the player of the game afterwards and
28:56
how it was probably just like a bunch of viruses inside of it someone did clarify
29:01
that after each time someone wears the mask they do clean it with a Clorox wipe
29:07
and I both love that they keep it clean and also that they had to come out and
29:13
announce that it just again offthe wall one more
29:19
thing is that I am actually really excited I have I have mentioned before that I have some merch that I am
29:26
launching um um I ordered some for myself because I want to see it and wear
29:31
it before I um you know really push it uh but I'm so excited it is coming
29:39
this afternoon so but I I couldn't wait to record this so I will have to post a few pictures and I will um post some
29:48
pictures and link the merch shop hopefully this afternoon and then all of you can get
29:55
merched to be part of the hot girls hockey club and join me because we are all beauties
30:03
we're all hot girls loving hockey and together we can keep up these Positive
30:08
Vibes because like I said the highest Vib score last game and we are going to keep it up so I will see you next time
