Pittsburgh Penguins star center Sidney Crosby left the Penguins’ 3-2 shootout loss to New Jersey on Tuesday night with an injury, leaving his status unknown with the Four Nations Tournament looming. Crosby skated into Devils forward Erik Haula and was evaluated for an upper-body injury. After returning to the game briefly, Crosby exited the game again and missed practice on Wednesday.
According to several reports, the Nova Scotia native returned to practice for a short time Thursday before skating primarily on his own. Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan said after practice that everything was “status quo” with the 37-year-old center.
The Penguins fell to seventh place in the Metropolitan Division with Tuesday’s loss. Currently, the Penguins sit outside of the playoff picture and a lengthy absence from Crosby could cause the Pens to be sellers at the March 7 trade deadline.
The Penguins are already without Evgeni Malkin, who is on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Crosby leads the team in scoring with 41 assists and 58 points. In his career, the 20-year veteran has collected 609 regular season goals with 1,045 assists.
