0:18
hello welcome to her Wildside hockey podcast I am your Hostess Mickey AKA hockey she wrote and we are past the
0:26
deadline day trade deadline day um I wanted to record about it yesterday
0:32
which would have been Saturday but I just needed time to process because for the wild fans that are here
0:39
for the Vibes it was a lot to handle but we made it through and we do
0:45
have some good stuff too so you know we have to make our peace what is you know
0:52
what will be we be um but before we get like deep
0:57
into all the trades there's kind of uh two things I'm going
1:03
to touch on so first I'm going to talk about Pat maroon and the biggest thing
1:08
is that the way that bill Garen is able to make some of these trades
1:15
he just sometimes he just like steals assets um I know not everyone was okay
1:22
with the trade for Maroon before the season started uh AKA my
1:28
brother but while maroon was here he really brought good things to the club I
1:35
know he didn't always fight have that physical Edge that the people wanted but
1:40
you know what he was on the fourth line he helped push it he was scoring goals and like putting
1:47
up points so it was nice and the the biggest thing without getting into like all the details is that bill Garen
1:55
traded for Maroon with a seventh round pick and flipped him for way more than
2:02
that and again I know not Everyone likes the trades that that Garen makes but the
2:08
way that he's able to do that sometimes is mind-blowing um and then you
2:15
know the dewis are officially split up it's always hard to see players that
2:22
have come up through the system you know who were drafted by the wild came up through Iowa especially were here for a
2:30
few years you know I feel like that's one of those things that makes it even harder because like and I know part like
2:37
mmat Dumbo was traded I know part of that or not traded he signed somewhere else sorry um part of that was that not
2:44
only was he here for a long time but he came up through the system he you know he was drafted by Minnesota he's been he
2:50
had been part of it for a long time and both of the dewis that was the same thing um and it was really hard to see
2:58
Brandon do in an avalanche Jersey especially playing against the Wild and
3:04
you know I I don't know I I can't read his mind and I don't know what he's thinking but most of the pictures that
3:11
they have posted of him at in Colorado he looks so sad and I know he wanted to stay in
3:19
Minnesota because he talked about that he's talked about it many times that he loves Minnesota he wanted to stay at the
3:25
same time we all knew it was coming because if he wasn't traded at the
3:31
deadline you know he was a a UFA coming in the offseason and he just he would be
3:38
asking too much money more than the wild could pay him so we all knew it was
3:43
coming even do but I think it still is just really upsetting and knowing how loved he is in
3:51
the Minnesota Wild locker room made it even harder and then everyone and again Bill
4:00
Garen he is known for like these last minute trades remember last year when he traded for John kingberg and
4:08
literally was like 30 seconds before it hit you know was it like 3:00 like 30
4:14
seconds before trade was done is when he got that one done like it so Connor der
4:22
he traded him right before and what's so sad is that everyone on you know social
4:29
media IIA was like okay we did not lose both dewys we
4:34
still have a Dewey we still have doer and even derer said you know when
4:40
my phone didn't ring by that point in time I thought okay I made it and that's
4:45
what he said like heartbreaking I made it and
4:51
[Music] then he was trade in now for him I'm a
4:57
little bit different about how I'm feeling because he does seem excited
5:02
again he's a Canadian kid playing for Toronto so that aspect of it is exciting
5:09
you know and I I'm happy that he's found something to enjoy and you know what if
5:16
Colorado and Toronto go on like a deep playoff run I will be more than happy
5:22
for both of the dewis it's just a little bit hard right now to deal with it and of course
5:30
there's been this whole blowup on social media and honestly I was not on Twitter
5:38
last night to see how this started how it went down but some basically people
5:44
were like oh Connor deer another white guy on the team and anyone who is a wild fan knows
5:51
immediately that Connor der is not white he might have lighter
5:57
skin but he is from the m tribe which was formed when indigenous
6:05
women would marry um white men coming from you know um like France or French
6:12
Canadian um English whatever I you know I don't know exactly all the nationalities that anyway it was a it
6:18
was a forming of a tribe and that's why you know he looks
6:25
white but an interesting thing that someone has been pointing out is if you look at Do's facial
6:31
structure he has very um indigenous features and I you know I don't know a
6:38
lot about bone structures and that kind of stuff but if you do compare he has a
6:44
bone structure that once you compare it's like oh yeah you know what you're right either way you know what I
6:51
understand if you didn't know that he was indigenous I I understand that but people when they were corrected
6:59
on that doubled down we're like well how was I supposed to know well it's not
7:06
that you are supposed to know so much as when someone corrects you you just go oh
7:13
okay like I never knew that I learned something today it's as simple as that and I you know I don't know where
7:21
Do's going to end up after this season because he is an RFA I don't know if he'll you know if
7:28
Toronto will give him a quality ing offer I don't know if he'll sign somewhere else but I really hope that
7:34
wherever he lands he is able to um find kind of the connections that
7:39
he did here in Minnesota I know that he did work to help the I think it was the
7:44
American Indian Center and you know he he and duain both they took over um the
7:52
Hockey Camp that Matt Dumba ran for four years you know um I'm trying to think
7:59
what I don't remember the exact name but basically it's it's for um diversity and hockey it's and all sorts of different
8:05
diversity and they ran it last year and it was so cute I mean last year last
8:10
month and it was so cute and they looked like they were having so much fun and now that they're both gone I
8:17
know one of the questions is well who's going to run it now so that'll be something to look forward to seeing who
8:22
will step into that role now there is one big bright spot
8:30
that we're going to talk about before we get into the nitty-gritty of the
8:35
trades and his name is morat k previously I was saying K N I was
8:44
wrong I thought I had it right I was wrong you do not pronounce the k it is who's nof and I hope that I hope that I have
8:51
heard that correctly because watch me have to get um corrected again anyway uh morat is here he is here in Minnesota
9:00
uh I he seems super happy I know there were there was one um guy on the wild
9:06
staff who met him at the airport and said that he was just like so happy so smiley he traveled here with I believe
9:13
it's his sister his older sister older sister um she's like a fashion designer
9:19
from what I'm seeing on Instagram I don't I can't speak Russian so but he also seems to maybe have a a little bit
9:27
better of a handle on English than kill did just judging by the video that they
9:34
sent they posted of him when morat got here versus the video of krill the
9:40
second year he got here it just seems like maybe he has a little bit better of a handle which is exciting because then maybe will be able to hear directly from
9:47
him a little sooner um whenever he's comfortable obviously we don't want to force anybody to speak in a language
9:53
they're not comfortable with but it's very exciting to see this morning um it's Sunday today this
10:00
morning they posted a couple pictures in a video of morat practicing with the
10:05
scratches the guys that are injured the assistant coaches and he just like he looked like he was excited and not that
10:13
he's like he doesn't seem to be like a smiley guy but I feel like you can just see that he is excited that he likes
10:21
what's happening he's excited to be here he can't wait to kind of like get in on stuff um I know they got him a place to
10:28
live near like near Carill so he will have someone to help him you know with
10:34
anything that he needs to kind of get accustomed to America and I am really excited to see
10:40
whenever he is going to make his debut we don't know that yet when that will be
10:46
uh you know we did obviously lose three three uh players I'm sorry I just
10:53
notice that I wrote instead of maroon I wrote maroon I don't know where my mind goes
11:00
sometimes but anyway we are very excited to see his uh first game whenever that
11:05
is or uh first open practice actually now that I think about that I'm going to look and see when or if they have an
11:11
open practice I would just I would love to see him on the ice you know I've seen him in so many videos okay I'm gonna
11:17
stop I'm gonna stop raving now and while I prepare myself to talk all about the
11:24
trades and the specifics I am going to have have you guys listen to just a really quick ad

12:26

12:31
perfect bundle I personally have it and I don't know what you would do without
12:37
it hi welcome back okay so trade deadline
12:43
day we knew it was going to be different than the last two years the last two years the wild were in a spot where you
12:49
know obviously they hadn't clinched a playoff spot but we knew we knew they were going to
12:55
be in contention so the last two years we're really excited because for the most part
13:00
it was more adding you know you were adding players it wasn't so much about sending and and getting things in return
13:06
if that makes sense and this year a lot of what we got uh were draft picks
13:14
which the Wild and the way that they draft they are able to find kind of
13:22
these Diamonds in the Rough because so I was asked on a um I was on Leaf late
13:27
night and I was asked about this and you know draft picks what rounds do you
13:33
think they got the right you know a a good draft pick for this player that player
13:39
honestly I I know that you know you you want a first round you want a second
13:44
round you know but you'll take any round I just always think about how
13:49
caprisa was drafted in the fifth round and he is this Superstar so
13:56
whenever I'm asked about like kind of the later rounds it's kind of like to me it doesn't really matter because I trust
14:03
the way that the wild draft I know some people are having a problem with that because lately like
14:11
Iowa has been having a really hard time this year Iowa wild they're not doing great um a lot of the prospects just
14:18
aren't quite ready they're not NHL ready but you know what I think I don't
14:24
think that means that they did a bad job drafting I think it just means that there are struggles that you can't you
14:31
can't see you you don't know um it's like last year with Rossy or even last
14:36
year pulling up Beckman or at the beginning of the year Sammy Walker Beckman you know it's just you don't you
14:43
don't really know some of these other struggles but one of the things I noticed is when they were interviewing
14:50
Bill Garen about all the trades how it went down he looked visibly
14:57
bummed like I completely believe him when he
15:02
said that it was really hard to have to make these trades I could never be a GM and do
15:10
trading and stuff because I would literally just like collect players and you can't do that obviously because you can only have 23 roster spots but I
15:16
would just be like I'd be like nope nobody can leave I am the mama hen I'm just going to keep Gathering chicks uh
15:23
hockey player chicks and you were all going to stay in the fold here in
15:29
Minnesota in the Exile Center and that's not how it works obviously but I did think that it was
15:36
kind of touching to see that he was upset because he liked the deys he loved the deys we all love the deys and to
15:43
lose them was upsetting so we are going to talk let me I have a couple little Graphics here so if you're watching
15:48
you'll be able to see them but I will talk about them in case you are just listening so we're gonna start
15:56
with the Nick patan to the Rangers and in return we got Turner
16:04
ellson so uh Elson is a forward and he was sent
16:10
straight to Iowa he is kind of a um career AHL player he's played three
16:17
different NHL games in his career um and from what I see he he can he can produce
16:23
points but he's just he's just a really hard worker and it's hard to lose patan
16:30
because patan puts up points you know like he was you know like the leading
16:35
scorer he's putting up points he was doing great he was kind of the one person consistently scoring I think in
16:41
Iowa and in return we get Elson who isn't really a scorer but you I think at
16:47
this point they are just trying to get some more veteran presence in
16:53
Iowa and this was an opportunity for patan that kind kind of is like this is like a
16:59
bigger opportunity for him so you know this trade what do I
17:05
think yeah I I I don't really have strong feelings either way I think that
17:11
hopefully uh patan will find success in New York and hopefully Elson will be able to um maybe just bring a little
17:18
more of a presence to Iowa trade number two which was actually
17:24
the first trade that we learned about was Brandon de to the Colorado Avalanche and in return the wild get a 2026 third
17:32
round pick and I think this is a good a good trade you know
17:38
um duim is a really hard worker um obviously he's not someone that you're
17:45
going to get like a first or second just because he produces points but it's not
17:50
like not as high as maybe um someone else would get a a first round for but a
17:57
third round pick I think is really good because he does bring a lot that's not just scoring or putting up points yes he
18:05
mostly plays on the fourth line but he's played up the lineup to the third line he is good on the penalty kill he it was
18:13
I mean that was what was really hard was losing both two like two of the best penalty killers on the wild but he's
18:20
good on the penalty kill he's tough he'll drop the gloves you know he's a hard
18:26
worker so to get the pick in return yeah I mean a third round was
18:32
great and like I never know how far out
18:37
does it matter um meaning so this is 2024 obviously this draft pick is for two years from now
18:45
so you know if I'm like a GM I don't know does the year matter or does it
18:53
only really matter depending on what else you have because to me it's like okay it
18:58
doesn't really matter when the third round pick is but we have it so let's see I'm going to switch over
19:06
to the next graphic so um I'm going to talk about
19:11
Pat maroon first because or um as I accidentally wrote down marun aroon uh
19:17
Pat mararo is now with the Boston Bruins who apparently he thought hated him
19:22
which makes me a little bit sad um you can come back maroon that's fine we
19:29
received Luke toporowski and a 2026 sixth round
19:36
pick but um it's that one's conditional it's only if maroon plays a playoff game
19:45
for Boston because he is still currently injured he's rehabbing from back surgery he is supposed to be coming back in the
19:51
next few weeks from what I understand so this should be uh a pretty easy you know
19:57
like this should be fine we should get that draft pick and again he we traded for him with a seventh round pick and
20:04
are getting back a sixth round pick plus we've got this this uh toer
20:10
rowski which I feel like people call him topper or
20:15
toppy we'll see what he you know what he likes he's another forward he is uh I
20:21
believe like 22 years old so he's still pretty young he's going straight to Iowa and he is the first player to play for
20:29
the Iowa wild who is actually from Iowa so that's that was just a really cool a
20:35
really cool kind of side bonus to us all someone kind of compared him I was
20:41
reading through scouting reports someone compared him to they said think of your favorite small NHL pot
20:49
stirer you know so like in my head immediately I'm like well Brad
20:54
Marshon you know um so maybe we have another on her hands I would be okay with that um apparently he's got like a
21:01
quick powerful shot quick hands he's got some good speed and he he's in the age on now but he's young
21:10
and I'm excited to kind of see how he develops down there and our last trade our number four
21:19
trade Connor derer to Toronto mapel Leafs in exchange a 2026 fourth round
21:25
pick Plus Dimitri of I knew I was going
21:31
to do this I psyched myself out OV OV okay so again this is I think this
21:39
is another great trade I I do think garan made great trains with trades with what he had because for duim got a third
21:47
round derer comes with a little bit more of an an upside than duim does so he
21:53
gets a fourth round and another another player a prospect
21:59
and that works because again derer has a little bit more of a scoring Edge than dohe does he had that hat trick earlier
22:05
in the season which was you know kind of out of the blue but at the same time he
22:11
was like yeah I can score whatever why is everyone making a big deal about this now the the prospect that we got he
22:20
actually just left the KHL and signed over here with the Marley's so he is not
22:28
actually going to Iowa right now he is staying with the Marley because he's with them for their playoff Run for the
22:35
AHL in scouting reports what I read is that he is Speedy he's got a good release he's got great potential he just
22:42
needs to add some strength and I feel like that is something you know I don't know what his
22:48
future plans are but when we have guys who kind of stay over the summer and
22:54
work on strength with like the wild St half they are stronger like every like
23:01
look at Rossy Rossy stayed Rosie Rossy stayed over the summer and he put on
23:08
like 15 20 pounds of muscle I mean he you could visibly see that he was beefed
23:13
up so you know again I don't know if this gu would come to Minnesota or what
23:19
he would do but if he's able to kind of continue over the offseason and add some
23:24
strength it would be really interesting to see hopefully we see him in Iowa next season um I know we just we need more
23:31
prospects to come over and see if we can improve this Iowa team a little bit because right this year they're just not
23:38
doing great and the problem I guess I can I can take this graphic off so you can look at my beautiful face instead um
23:44
the problem is that is this a good way to develop
23:51
wallstead like he is he's doing good but there are
23:58
games that they are just they lose terribly or they just
24:03
it's just not great and it's not wallstead fault necessarily you know he
24:10
might have a bad day or something everybody does but if you have the team playing in
24:15
front of him that's swiss cheese and is letting everything through and wallstead
24:21
can only stand on his head so much you just have to think that
24:28
what's better for him keeping him down there another year or bringing him up to the
24:34
NHL because we have this really interesting
24:41
situation and I'm trying to think
24:47
of so we've got the three goalies we've got flurry we've got guson
24:54
and we've got walstead flurry we all thought was going to retire after this year and I don't
25:01
think he's going to I don't think he's going to retire anymore and I do honestly think that at
25:07
the beginning of the Season he made a good decision to not make an
25:13
announcement because he has played so well he looks like his old self so I
25:20
could see him signing another year and I would love to have him here in Minnesota I know that one of the reasons that he
25:25
did not want to be traded is not only because he feels like the wild are his team they're his boys he wants to stay but
25:32
also because he wants to stay with his family that was the whole reason why
25:38
like when he signed he wanted at least a two-year deal because he deserves that
25:44
he deserves to not have to move his family all the time you know his kids
25:49
are getting older and that's got to suck for them so moving on we've got gipson
25:58
who last year was just an absolute
26:04
Enigma and this year and he knows this because he's talked about it he has struggled so much with consistency
26:10
because there are nights where he is
26:16
amazing like when they played um was it Arizona where they
26:22
scored like instantly on the first shot in like 20 seconds
26:28
but then after that he locked it down and he did not make more stupid
26:35
mistakes but again he's he's either on or off and there's no gray
26:41
medium this year but I want to continue to have
26:46
faith in him I hope I hope that the wild do not try to move him because he has
26:52
shown what he can do and with a team where it seems like
26:57
we are doing a little bit more of a rebuild than um Guan wanted to or we wanted to I feel like we should keep him
27:06
around and see what more he can do can he become more consistent can he you
27:13
know just can he become that number one that we all think he can and that he
27:18
wanted to prove he can be I think so but then we have wallstead so
27:26
originally the plan was to pull wallad up to Minnesota next season with Guston it would be the last year of his
27:33
ELC and have Guston you know play number one and have wallstead be number
27:40
two but do you want wallstead to play in front of a team like this um they kind
27:49
of they threw him to the wolves in that Texas game I I hate that if there's one
27:54
thing that I hate that the wild did this year it's that it's having his first NHL
28:00
game be such a load of crap and I feel so bad
28:05
for him I do hope he gets a few more starts here as we get towards playoffs if we become you know if we get to a
28:12
spot where we know where we're going can we make the playoffs or is there no way we will make the playoffs then pull him
28:19
up and we'll see how he's doing or do we leave in the in the AHL I
28:24
mean okay it's just there's no right answer there's no right
28:32
answer but honestly if I had to make the choice as of right
28:37
now I would try to resign flurry for you know he might be amable to a one-year
28:45
contract knowing that time is coming up now maybe a two-year contract but I
28:51
don't think we want to sign him to a to because we want to pull up wallstead I think we keep guson around I
29:00
think we keep wallad in Iowa but see if we can give him a few
29:05
starts here or there you know it we'll we have to wait
29:11
and see I am going to do a quick little ad
29:18
here so if you would like to support our show my show the Pod Network that I am
29:25
affiliated with we have a special affiliate link for Ticket Master if you buy any and all tickets through our link

29:39
nothing extra you're not paying extra we are taking some money from Ticket Master
29:44
as basically being like yeah we sold tickets for you and this is not just hockey tickets folks this is any tickets
29:50

30:34
then in my show notes also I will have links to some of our other ways that we
30:39
try to support the show financially and I will also have a list of all the
30:46
different trade deadline day articles that I wrote about this if you just want a little more
30:52
information so I'm going to wrap this up because this is getting really long but there are two things that I want to say
30:57
number one Adam Beckman is up here he's actually getting some ice time it's not
31:02
always great especially on what was it f Saturday no Friday Thursday Friday
31:08
Friday was so many special teams and he's just he's not on a special team but I'm excited to kind of have him get a
31:14
little more ice time up here and just prove that he can stay up here the last thing I'm want to say is
31:22
that if you remember I do have a merch shop which I will link below in the show
31:28
notes there is plenty of stuff with uh my her Wildside logo which you see on my
31:34
screen if you're watching me and um I have all sorts of different stuff like
31:40
my hot girl Hockey Club shirt and these things are available not just shirts
31:46
there's also coffee mugs there's stickers there's all sorts of things again this is a way if you think that these are fun you would wear it you'd
31:52
use it um this is another way to support my show financially and
31:57
uh I will say the the shirts that I've gotten are very comfortable so this is you know I'm I'm literally telling you
32:03
that these are good good shirts so I will leave you with that um I hate doing
32:10
a hard sell I I used to side note um for a little while I did sorry I did a mommy
32:19
blog this is before mommy blogs got like weird but you know obviously I was
32:25
trying to like make a little money from it so I would do like sponsored posts and stuff but I had such a hard time
32:32
doing them because it would be like take these weird awkward pictures of you
32:38
holding a product and like a you know so the labels facing the camera or like oh
32:44
like having to do a video kind of like this I hate A Hard Sell so um just know
32:51
that I am only hard selling things that I use myself like ticket master and my merch
32:59
all right I'm going to leave you because I'm sure you're annoyed of me and you don't want to listen to me anymore I
33:04
don't blame you I will be back sooner than a week uh and until then I want you
33:10
to keep the Good Vibes going for the Minnesota Wild because we can make the playoffs Good Vibes for the dewis and
33:17
maroon um thank you for your service hopefully we see you again uh on our
33:22
bench and not the other and everybody is a part of the h Hockey Club I love you
33:28
all and I will see you next time bye
