and welcome back episode 120 of the ranting ranges podcast in partnership with inside the rink I'm your host Jacob
0:17
burkowitz and I'm alongside my co-host Brett Brett are there any words to
0:23
justify or whatever it is to explain this comeback win um not really I actually had a
0:31
pretty odd way of watching the game um so tonight I I walk into a birthday
0:37
party for my girlfriend's family most of who I'm meeting for the first time uh and so my plan was to to watch the game
0:44
after I got home but you know I I live in Buffalo now so uh of course when I
0:49
walk in the game is on the TV um and I'm I'm just trying not to flip out because the Rangers are just getting humbled by
0:56
the Islanders and I'm trying to keep my attention on her family um which actually is pretty super easy
1:02
because her dad is really funny um and in my life experience meeting Dad that's so rarely the case but he's genuinely a
1:09
cool guy um and her mom was really interesting and laughs easily so I really enjoyed talking to them but it
1:14
seemed like every time I looked at the TV the iers scored um and so I'm just
1:19
trying not to like flip out in front of the family um so I end up just giving up on watching the game like in the second
1:25
I'm like this game is over this is a loss um and then at the end of the party I checked the scor and I'm like we came
1:31
back um it turns out her uncle is also Rangers Fan and it was his birthday um
1:36
and I also broke a crown uh on some candy so with my sacrifice and the luck
1:42
of the Rizzo Clan you can thank me for this win tonight I think I really should have gotten an assists on Pan's winning
1:49
goal um so yeah it was just just absolutely wild I I I watched the the
1:54
third period comeback um and and I didn't know how it went down I'm I'm sitting here and it's like four minutes
2:00
left in the game and it we're still down two I'm like how does this happen uh but
2:07
yeah amazing amazing comeback um I really did not think they had him I had completely given up but uh oh they like
2:15
yeah no no I I was there and like honestly like 80% of the game was terrible like they did not play well
2:22
they they they did not play well but like after that win it was just like I I
2:27
I don't care what they did I'll think about that after like announces and all that I don't care it's just this is like one of the best
2:33
comebacks you're going to see at a in a big game like this um it
2:38
was it was nothing honestly like in my section uh because I was I wasn't really
2:44
fully behind the goal where panan shot it I was a little uh to the left from
2:49
his point of view but we didn't know why it didn't count in at that time when they were
2:57
waiting I thought originally that maybe they called The Whistle before something
3:02
like that oh man I didn't know um I didn't know it was because they knocked
3:08
the the net off I had no idea no one in my section knew oh wow we're waiting like well forget like on top of the fact
3:15
is it a Goen not go like what the hell happened to begin with because like you kind of like understand on your own like
3:20
what they're most likely going to rule as if you know you know what they're trying to call um but yeah no that's
3:27
100% a goal uh anyone that's read the end rules or oh yeah absolutely it's a goal anyone complaining about that it's
3:34
just it's not it's the factual it is a goal oh yeah anyone that's complaining about doesn't understand the rules and
3:39
like you're watching I mean yeah I knew it was going to be a goal because they obviously won but honestly it could have
3:45
that they could have disallowed that and then we scored later I wouldn't have known but as soon as I went I was like well that's the game wining goal it's like that net is off its Wars yeah but
3:53
like he was shooting it like before it was off its Mings like that's a goal uh that didn't used to be the case so I
3:59
understand some people people that uh used to watch hockey it used to be you know if the net was off the Bings it was
4:04
done right away um I don't know when they changed that rule but I I could forgive some people that they did
4:10
because why should the team be punished for what the opponent did like oh yeah absolutely knock off the net like sure I
4:16
guess like when it's shown to be intentional they have a delay game but still like that's not a goal right yeah
4:22
under those circumstances it should be a goal yeah that's exactly what the rule should be and they called it and so yeah
4:28
as soon as he WI I was like yep that that's it I don't I know exactly how they're going to rule because uh we had
4:34
our friend Dave Jackson on the ESPN broadcast he brought it and he's like Yep this is he's like this is a good goal he's like he's still in the motion
4:41
of shooting here uh the defense knocked it off the moing it's clearly going in where the net would have been textbook
4:48
goal yeah exactly exactly so um it wasn't like maybe he didn't get off in time y it was just textbook it was it's
4:56
not like you have to have the puck off the stick like the puck doesn't have to be on its way it's just like you have to
5:02
basically already be in the act of of shooting roughly around the time where it goes off mornings well well speaking
5:09
of the uh active shooting uh there was a thing hopefully um obviously from what I
5:15
saw I don't remember who said this that Ryan linin had to go to an ambulance ambulance uh they're GNA see how he's
5:21
doing Tuesday I believe yeah what I mean I know he got hit there was a high stick
5:27
yeah um and right after scored and Romanov basically g a high uh Comm a
5:34
high stick and then he went to the front of the net and then scored but that was a follow through yeah it wasn't a high
5:41
that wasn't yeah no no but but I I I just saw like sort of like a lot of people were saying why isn't that a high stick it sucked it was unlucky but it's
5:49
it's under the rules it's not it's not a penalty if he all through and uh I
5:56
mean yeah I had I had no problem with that being a call because yeah that that and that's always been the rule too if
6:02
it's a follow through it's not it's not high sticking I did have a problem with romanov's cross checks against troch in
6:09
the corner where they both ended up getting a penalty uh that was garbage um
6:15
and I don't know what Romanov was so upset about too he was like he seemed like what what what I'm like dude you
6:20
had like three V like not just the little tap pressing against somebody like you do against the boards that
6:26
happens a lot there was three hard full down right into the small of the back right where like the padding gets a lot
6:33
lighter um I was like yeah if I was tro I'd be absolutely livid too like get every right to do that I mean in fact it
6:40
really should have been another power play it should have been Romanov should have got two he should have got one for cross checking one for ruffing and then
6:47
then throw tro off for ruffing too but I I get that that's a tough call to make but he had every right to be upset yeah
6:54
no 100% Mayfield had so many penalties he made Cory Perry he made Cory Perry jealous
7:01
yeah yeah I I actually I went to the game with my friend Donnie uh we had him
7:07
on uh I think about a year ago he's on on this fan and like he said like um
7:13
Mayfield takes a lot a lot of penalties and it's cost them because he's one of their best not one of the best but he's
7:19
a really good penalty killer ouch and then he three that game right yeah and when he took that last one he's like God
7:25
dang it Mayfield not like it was like it's apparently a knowing thing Mayfield takes a solid amount of penalties um but
7:34
um yeah no I I don't blame him for being upet at the end of the game uh if it was at the uh on our side I'd be pretty
7:41
pissed off right now yeah um I mean I don't like to have like a knee-jerk reaction and have like it's over and
7:48
we're back moment like just by simply one game but it it was definitely
7:54
deflating uh you have a big game you've shown in the past six games that you're not the team like you were in January
8:00
that you could be a really good team and at a game like this it's not a pal um a
8:06
playoff game it's not like uh a huge two points it it was just known as like you
8:12
know in general just a big game just in general because the Stadium Series and you expect them to come out and play and
8:18
they didn't and it was very deflating like sure like I'm not gonna totally
8:23
summarize who you are based off this game but it tells me a bit on the big
8:28
games that you're not going to come out to play um and I mean hey I I don't know
8:34
how they did it uh they probably don't know either but they they pulled it off and two Power Play Goals I'm sorry three
8:43
was it three three right three three Power Play Goals yeah uh cold power play
8:48
I mean hopefully this ignites it especially MAA right I mean that's two
8:54
Power Play Goals in consecutive games um honestly I I'm the same as I
9:01
was like hours ago I'm I'm lost for words I I don't know how to summarize this in a way that it'll justify because
9:08
this was insane it was ridiculous it 99 out of 100 times this isn't happening n
9:15
a thousand times it's only happening once yeah I I come back like that yeah
9:20
absolutely um you know I'm not really want to uh put too much shock in how
9:26
they played for the first two periods um just because it is it's such a weird
9:32
game because you're right it's just a regular season game it's just worth two points but the goal especially also like
9:38
the goali going into this I I wasn't expecting this to be like a goal tending
9:43
uh dominant match up no because it's you're outside air glare the sun glare
9:50
it it I that's why like which just sterkin like played very well in the second and third um or whenever he had
9:56
chances then uh like you know I'm I'm gonna take the First with a massive grain of salt but um no I I mean I it is is it
10:04
unfair to summarize this team won't come out in big games solely on this no that would be 100% a fair it's
10:11
just how do you say it it it's not fully showing you but it kind of gives you the
10:17
wrong signs uh I mean I you you could make that argument and uh and it could be
10:23
right I guess what I'm saying is that this is such a weird game that I mean if
10:30
you've ever played hockey outside versus playing inside it's not just the sun and the glare um the atmosphere the um the
10:38
way the puck bounces on the ice the way your skates feel on the ice is totally totally different um now granted it's
10:45
still a hockey team and both teams are playing in the same condition so they should be able to come out and play but things like that can you know upset you
10:53
and especially if you go down early it can really suck the life out of you and then you feel like you are the team
10:59
that's playing against the elements you know I it's something I feel is so not talked about in sports in general is the
11:06
psychological impacts of the game um and that's the part that I think shows why
11:11
this team is special is that they were down they were down late and they didn't
11:17
give up um that they're they may not always have the uh uh the hit the ice
11:24
you know period one mentality that you want to see uh but they're not giving up on any games and they have the talent um
11:31
and the work ethic when they want to to perform Small Miracles and Soze when
11:38
they want to yeah when they want to yeah exactly so I'm I'm want to say hey uh
11:44
it's a weird game to start off with it got off on the wrong foot chese let in some goals it's also a weird game to uh
11:52
to be a top goal tender in just I feel like these games always tend to be higher scoring in general uh Islanders
11:58
Rangers game tend to always be kind of weird anyway too so I I I feel like you
12:03
get a little deflated you get mentally you know uh you get mentally down uh
12:08
about what's happening in the game and then you're fighting in this this weird environment with these weird situations
12:14
um you know it can really easily create a lackluster thing but then to be able to have the fortitude to come back and
12:20
to win the game like that that is what I'm going to take away so if you feel pessimistic about the game I'm not going
12:25
to tell you you're wrong um I just choose to say and see that this is actually a good
12:31
thing for the team um that they battle back and they had a really big win in a really fun game um that I don't think
12:38
anyone was really expecting no no no definitely not um the only thing was is
12:45
that they showed a few of their habits in the first like they had in January right like how what how many uh minutes
12:51
was it when they is scored all three of their goals in the first yeah it was yeah I don't know and it was the center
12:57
of the it was the middle of the ice the Rangers were scrambling um and it's just there was no response until someone had
13:05
a step up um and the problem is it's been seeming like everyone is waiting
13:10
for someone else to step out when everyone themselves should be doing it and they did that tonight they they did
13:17
it late but but they did it um and I I believe Valley mentioned this I'm not sure but I believe he did is that they
13:23
got to get a a guy or maybe he was uh Mike rup on NHL Network that they got to
13:28
get a guy that will initiate right will will actually I don't know if Seth the Tone's the right word but it'll actually
13:35
get People Pumped up they'll get omized um and because for some reason
13:41
the Rangers have a problem with that sometimes I mean obviously they didn't have a problem with that in the beginning of the season but they they
13:47
seem to have the problem everyone's waiting for someone else and that's why will Co is such a fan favorite right because he's he's a guy that actually
13:52
sets the tone yeah um defensively uh yeah there there are
13:58
definitely concerns there but hey like what was it in third period they only let up like six shots on goal yep and
14:03
obviously none in overtime uh so they they shut him down they shut him down and and that's when you could summarize
14:09
more of like if they didn't do well the to the throughout the whole game and
14:15
then just had a crazy comeback like last four minutes it's fair to say that um
14:21
yeah this just wasn't a good game in general and this probably uh you could evaluate the team based off this but
14:28
when the team isn't doing well in the first they do better in the second and then third they do really well you could more lean to that okay this yeah like
14:35
you said this is an outdoor game uh there are elements to this that they're not used to um and yeah so on and so
14:42
forth I mean also uh I I tweeted that out before a player that's not gonna get enough credit is Alexa lafranier in that
14:50
game tying goal he prevented Adam Pell from clearing it by diving poaching uh
14:56
pocking it to panarin P passing it back and then LA are passing it to Fox to set
15:01
up yep to soon to be game time goal and while we don't see the
15:08
Flash and like the uh Flare from laugher consistently I mean listen once
15:13
like every other game or so he'll have like a de that impresses us but it won't be capitalized on but man even when he's
15:22
not doing that he is really helping this team in so many ways and imagine if they actually pulled
15:29
the trigger on the trade in the summer oh it would have been such a disaster
15:34
such a disaster because yeah I and laer deserves a lot of credit um you know if
15:40
you're watching these games closely and you're watching him I I feel like he is a guy that is
15:45
putting in that extra little bit of effort uh so often and is making making plays happen um that is what's making
15:53
that line work so well I mean obviously troch and Panera are big parts of that but he's doing a lot lot of the Dirty
15:59
Work like you're talking about on on mik's game time goal um you know that extra effort of diving for the play and
16:04
getting the puck and then making making the good you know second assist pass I mean Foxx's pass was is brilliant and M
16:11
just slamming it home I mean it was just and it was so big bang boom too it was such a fast play and it's like yeah if
16:18
you guys want to pass around this is how you have to do it you know and and they shot it they didn't try to pass it into
16:24
the net yeah yeah exactly uh but yeah laer deserves a ton of credit I I I'm
16:30
just still so happy with how he has progressed as a player and even what you
16:35
know like you said even when he's making these plays and he's not getting rewarded from it to me it's only a matter of time before he is um he is the
16:43
guy um he is I do believe that he is the guy that we wanted um and I I would be
16:49
shocked if by next year he's not putting up closer to to 60 70 points honestly
16:56
with the way he's playing a little bit like a little bit of luck changes a little bit of shooting changes and
17:02
there's a ton more goals and points rolling in for him for sure if if he works on a shot this summer like he
17:08
worked at skating last summer yeah yeah no se 70 points is definitely realistic
17:14
and it's crazy to think given past years um third line
17:20
again establishes or sets the tone of the game well Eric go syst scored it but
17:25
the third line was out there uh k and Johnny binski both had an
17:31
assist is it I mean I'm not there yet but are we getting to the point where
17:38
brazinski if Brin brazinski might not be the worst three seat to have if you're
17:44
GNA truly get a top right winger or we're not we're not there or you're not
17:50
there or you're just he's not that he's playing well now just get a
17:56
3C um I'm not saying he's not because he is playing he is playing well um and I
18:03
do like how that line Looks um but I think going into the playoffs you
18:10
really want to have him as your forc and you bump him down to 4C you get a real
18:17
right winger and put VC back down there um we're just such a deeper team too
18:23
because also injuries happen as well if if if troch goes down then you you know
18:28
we want somebody like bradinsky to be able to slide into the second line I mean the third line Center not have to
18:34
slot into a second line center rle now so um I'm not ready to say yeah let's
18:40
roll with brazinski into the playoffs as 3C I I don't think he's done uh enough on his own to be able to
18:47
say yeah that's the guy we want in the third line Center role however I think and this is probably what you're saying
18:53
is that if that does end up being the way it is at least with how he's playing right now I don't that's not a
18:59
disqualifying Stanley Cup playoff run decision to make as a team like that's not a that's not a a place where he prob
19:06
didn't say this is why we didn't win no I don't think if he keeps playing at this level if that line keeps doing what
19:12
it's been doing then no it's not a disqualifying aspect it's just still something that should be improved on so
19:18
you can have real depth uh in the lineup and and it would just be so much better
19:23
for him to be on the fourth line than on the third line but I'm what what if they didn't go after a guy like Adam Henrik
19:31
and they I I know I keep on saying Laz a lot but a lazah type player who has been
19:36
playing on the fourth line this year but has played 3C last year and had like 32 even strength points like meaning you do
19:43
have that depth now and you don't give a lot of assets and you locate that to over top right LNG I'm not saying this
19:49
is what I do I'm just throwing out questions to you um like brazinski on his own I'd say no two on
19:57
any other team as a 3C but it's that chemistry with hedel and cocko which is
20:04
so valuable because that type of chemistry is not with with who and with who and kako [ __ ] and
20:10
kako okay he said hedel I was like huh I said hedel oh
20:17
go no um I mean that chemistry with [ __ ] now I keep on worrying I'm saying
20:23
he don't say he I'm like I'm gonna say he um his chemistry with God I keep on I
20:30
I'm keep on about okay [ __ ] [ __ ] and cocko yes coie and coo yes for me it
20:36
isn't about their chemistry because what makes that line work isn't that they're
20:41
like oh my God they just know where each other are on the ice it's not like that it's not like they're that telepathic
20:48
but like they fit like a glove yeah style of play it really I mean you have
20:55
coie you have kie who is a hardworking hard-nosed guy that can shoot you have
21:01
kako who's a possession monster it makes sense to have like a windup toy like like Johnny brazinski who is just like
21:07
he's like a little Energizer Bunny out there um and he's got enough skill to be a be able to play with them uh so I I I
21:15
just again it's fine if we go in with him I just don't think that like he's anyone that you have to um
21:23
uh I don't think he's anyone that you really have to you know put your hopes on right now like I it's not I don't
21:30
think what is so special about that line cannot be improved upon I don't think it's crazy chemistry I just think if you
21:37
get another 3C it's got to be somebody that is a noticeable Improvement on that and isn't just like you know some slow
21:44
Meandering washed up star that can't you know you know we don't need a a Blake wheeler version of a center in that
21:50
third line that's not gonna help that third line but at the same time and this why I'm like yeah Blake like to me
21:55
that's not enough of an improvement over giant brzinsky at this point to go for it to me it's like I want to
22:01
substantially improve that 3C spot um to to make the depth better Blake Lazard is
22:08
a little too lateral for me at this point right that Blake Lazard would be more of a high-risk High reward type
22:15
scenario where he could just not play well heck he could get injured um because he had injury issues but he
22:21
could play if he plays like last year then it's a totally different conversation but yeah yeah the thing
22:26
also besides who would fit that description you just
22:32
said I mean that that is currently known to be available in being shopped no one
22:37
yeah but ufas I'm not not not not players with ter right that's what I
22:43
mean of of those people I think it really is down to him at this moment but as I you know said last week I think in
22:48
previous weeks as well that every year there's always something that happens there's somebody that you didn't think
22:54
was available maybe somebody that has two years a term you know that's not an RFA this year year or in a UFA this year
23:00
uh but that a team is willing to get rid of at the right price sort of thing um I still think that that could be a
23:06
possibility and hell if the Rangers do end up picking up somebody like that I'm gonna be screaming from the rooftops I'm like I [ __ ] told you I told
23:14
you like that that's not a crazy thing to think so but yes people Henrik
23:20
speaking of which uh Josh hofflin uh wrote an article uh tweet out an article
23:25
that he wrote and I when I saw this I'm like this is the exact type of player
23:30
Brett described when he said it's got to be someone that not a lot of people are talking about is I maybe not talking
23:38
about a lot because that there have been some on Twitter is Nick
23:43
buad that like he has term what is it two million a year left after this okay yeah
23:53
um I mean he's been playing top six because you know it is Arizona so so who else is going to play top six yeah if
24:00
it's not him it's going to like probably beer Leaguers or something and uh that
24:05
that that could be the person the player that fits your description yeah although again like I I
24:12
I'd want I guess here's the other wrinkle to this too is that it's very
24:18
possible that they know more 2.1 Mill 2.1 million by the way
24:23
this year and next year um it's very possible that they know the
24:28
Rangers know more about heel condition injury and likelihood to
24:36
return than we do as well this is the other wrinkle to this as well where they may not just be shopping for a rental
24:42
for this year but an actual heed replacement too um they could I mean we
24:49
know nothing about his condition as fans here they obviously know a lot more and maybe what they know is that they don't
24:55
know and we'll have to wait and see what happens but they also be like hey it's you know doctors be tell him it's very
25:01
unlikely that he is going to be playing professional hockey again you know and if he is it'll take years of rehab or
25:07
something like that so that's another wrinkle to this discussion isby took what a year and a half huh Crosby took a
25:14
year and a half yeah I mean yeah so that was a different injury than this I think
25:20
too because that was a neck thing not necessary head thing but regardless there's information that they know that
25:25
we don't know that and maybe they go oh yeah we'll have next year we are just looking for a three SE red that could also be the case but it's also something
25:31
to prepare yourself for as well is that they may be fine with taking a player with term uh because they know they're
25:36
not gonna have heo back too which could open up players that again that we're not really looking at or have Optics
25:43
into uh because they're not just looking for a 3C rental but a 3C replacement you know for the next few years um having
25:49
said that I would rather not have bu sad I mean yeah he's playing in in Arizona
25:55
which is rough but you know he does he's he's 31 and um you know he's never
26:01
really had uh any big years you know as I'm like scrolling through his stats his
26:06
biggest year was you know like seven years ago eight years ago uh with 49
26:12
points you know 19 goals his career high is his third season in 10 years ago with
26:18
24 goals you know it's I I would like somebody with a little bit more Firepower than that or at least a little
26:24
bit more upside than that because again 31 you're really entering those years where a lot of players really start losing
26:30
that yeah and honestly if you take uh bu st's Power Play points away so he has 27 points in general five Power Play points
26:37
22 um I don't believe if if brazinski played the same amount of games he did
26:43
uh brinsky played 36 he played 5 three three I mean is he that far away
26:50
from those numbers anyway that's what I mean is that I I I don't I'm not looking just no no no I I was just yeah no no
26:57
with B said I was saying I want him I'm just saying he kind of fit the description that you said of under the radar term yeah yeah for sure I I I just
27:06
I I would think or hope for something with a with a bit more with a bit more juice on it than than a Nick buad
27:12
character because again I I do I like like you're saying I think it's a kind of a a lateral
27:18
or a very nearly lateral move and if that's going to be the case I'd
27:24
rather not give up assets and just say let's trust you know Johnny's playing well let's let's ride him out and and
27:30
have him do that um if you can't substantially improve over him don't get ass don't give up assets for put all
27:35
those assets into getting the best right Wier you can then so from aror standpoint by the way
27:42
um we believe that wheeler should not have been uh obviously before his injury
27:48
which even though we would have rather not him in the line of playoff time it still sucks it went down this way it's
27:53
terrible for him um but you have and I have said that he should not be on this
27:58
team playoff time however from the Rangers point of view do you think this
28:04
makes them more aggressive for rightwing in the market because maybe they believed that it would be okay if worse
28:11
comes to worse they had to use all their assets for a center if the Rangers were dumb enough
28:18
to think that I'm saying do you think that they felt that I I know you're not telepathic I know you're not there I'm
28:24
just saying I does it seem like you think the ranger God I really hope not I I would
28:31
be so mad if that's what they thought I'd be so mad if they were like yeah you know what we'll go in Blake wheel or
28:37
line one that's working but it's also
28:43
it's you could be forgiven for thinking that too because you know they refus
28:48
to try anything else but but zipi and CR on the first line too which isn't really
28:54
working so um they could be that dumb I
28:59
choose to exist in a reality where they're not and they were already planning on replacing wheeler um and
29:05
this was just like a hey we we'll just you maybe it's also like a hey well it makes us look not as desperate too at
29:12
the at the trading deadline too like well we can just roll Blake wheeler we don't really need all the GMS would buy
29:17
it because they do believe he would be okay yeah probably yeah like oh yeah makes sense well we'll be on third Sho
29:23
they're not so desperate I'm not gonna have to I can't up the uh as price yeah yeah so I mean yeah but maybe you could
29:30
get maybe you could get a just in case wheeler comes back in the playoffs for a first round pick yeah who who's like the
29:38
oldest GM that's their team's still in the playoff
29:43
Chase it's good question call them up um but um yeah no it's just it's
29:52
definitely interesting and obviously this has kind of been in limbo as we've said multiple times
29:58
because it's it's a weird deadline given the injuries some of us jinxing it of
30:05
course and yeah we we no one knows what's going to go on because I mean yeah the
30:11
straight deadline sucks it's Center depth it's brutal but the the Rangers as
30:17
a whole you hope they they shape up more defensively because that that one player
30:24
is not going to truly fix it might give them a booze confidence or might help
30:29
you know on the time he's out there but them as a whole uh they've gotta protect
30:36
or defend that middle of the ice better uh yeah I just I do feel
30:42
that this team the the reason I'm not worried going in the playoffs right now is because I I think that the only the
30:50
only team that can beat this team is it's itself uh the only team that can beat the Rangers is the Rangers um and I
30:56
guess at this point I've seen enough of this team to know that we can absolutely
31:02
crush and come back against absolutely any team in the NHL and we can win 16
31:07
games in the playoffs um and what I'm kind of thinking now is that in those
31:14
playoff games they're not going to have the lifeless flat games because they'll be under so much pressure so much
31:19
adrenaline that they're not going to have they have a coach that coaches yeah and a coach at coaches they're not gonna
31:25
have sleepwalking January games in the playoffs I think that's less likely to happen um I think that they will you
31:32
know play with the tenacity that they need to and then they have the talent and everything else around there to uh
31:39
to win so I'm not overly concerned um about that you know and thankfully
31:44
thankfully we've only got like two and a half weeks left now is of by the time
31:49
the St yeah two and a half weeks before the deadline so we'll know very soon what this Rangers roster is going to look like on the playoffs barring injury
31:56
so um I'm hoping to see some movement real soon here yeah the the one thing
32:02
that gives me uh Comfort is that even under Gant how the Rangers played last
32:09
year defensively like defensively is not why they lost that that first round uh
32:14
but how they play defensively with under Golan uh and they just flipped the
32:19
switch after the regular season kind of gives me a bit more comfort with this team saying okay like they've
32:24
shown you know when the playoffs come things actually tighten up I mean who who said it Martin St Louis said players
32:32
don't not every player plays or no player plays 82 games 100 per. no yeah
32:37
exactly but in the playoffs right yeah so I think I think that will work in our advantage and I
32:44
think we'll have uh I don't think we'll have some of these dud games where we come out super flat and lifeless uh
32:50
that's just not the energy nature of of the of these uh playoffs and the Rangers
32:57
team itself is the kind of team um that when they do get fired up have just been
33:03
putting on the gas on and just and just steamroll through people um when this team's fired up I I don't think there's
33:09
anyone in the league that's that that is really GNA knock us off so that's the Vibes that that I'm going in with right
33:15
now what do they play like realistically the amount of time they actually were energized and actually play tonight 10
33:22
minutes no I yeah like it was last second second period second period I'm
33:28
I'm being a little um but the point is they only they didn't play the whole game and that's how good they are like
33:35
Montreal's a bottom feeder so I guess you kind of can't take it fully into account but you saw like how much how much time they they actually properly
33:42
play right and when they wanted to play I mean I don't think I've seen a team this
33:50
season where I think we said it months ago where they lost because simply the
33:55
other team was better they played great it's just the other team didn't they just played better yeah
34:02
no because when this team is on they're they're one of the best and and the East H who's who's threatening in the East
34:09
all the West that's the West Vancouver Dallas um Winn Colorado it's like the
34:17
only reason Carolina is just because their speed kills a pain to go up against them I
34:24
hope we don't go up against them I really do but like Who besides Carolina who who
34:30
else who who would you be terrified to play play against there's only one team in the NH that I'm terrified to play
34:35
against right now anyway Vancouver yeah that's it Dallas always gives the
34:44
well they're playing them Tuesday but Dallas for some does give the Rangers a hard time like every single time yeah
34:50
they give them a hard time but I don't think the D I don't think Dallas is coming out of the West I really don't there's something wrong with that
34:57
Dallas team and I don't know what it is because on paper I feel like they should be one of the best teams in hockey but
35:02
they seem to go through these these sputtering stting stops this year and
35:07
last year too um and I couldn't believe how poorly they played uh you know in the playoffs so I don't really believe
35:13
in the Dallas team for coming out of the West um you know it's probably a three horse race truly you know I don't
35:20
believe in Winnipeg truly um you know they they've got a great goalie and a
35:25
you know pretty decent team around him but I don't think they're they're the typee of team I think does really well in the regular season then comes in the
35:30
playoffs and just shits the bed I think you're looking at you know you can't count Colorado out Vegas obviously is a
35:37
is is a team that refuses to go away Boston's a fraud absolutely well I was talking
35:42
about the west but yeah no no but yeah I just I was just think about like top teams but van Vancouver on the other
35:48
hand is a team that is Terri so I is is unreal they have an absolutely
35:56
unreal goalie um their team top to bottom is is Young and super scary talented um and they
36:03
play Relentless hockey and have the whole year so far um and so many people
36:11
are so surprised by this and I'm like have you not watched Vancouver play like the second half of last season like they
36:18
were they were really good and they had all kinds of say they had key injuries they had coaching problems but once they
36:25
actually solidified it it was like man this is a team ready to make the jump they should have made the jump last year if it wasn't for injuries and back
36:31
coaching they should have made this jump last year so it's not surprising at all but that is a scary team um and it is
36:38
more than likely that we end up with a a
36:43
94 Stanley Cup matchup um and which would suck because Canucks are my second
36:50
favorite team they're also my cousin who's my best friend it's do it both times so the both times that we make it
36:55
to the Stanley Cup Final know we're just sitting there just killing each other yeah I I don't I don't really want that to happen but um it very well could
37:03
because I I to me I think they're both teams are are the favorites to come out
37:08
of each conference so I guess we'll see yeah I'm
37:14
just I mean I I spoke to Donnie about this during the game like the Islanders have also for their penalty kill as we
37:21
just saw is horrendous and they don't play full 62 I I said to him this is since due to fact that these teams are
37:27
both you know not a full 60 team and a lot of them both of them are going
37:32
specifically through struggles I know Rangers are on a streak but obviously this is after January and they're trying to get rid of those bad habits again
37:39
it's it's a matter of those little spurts that each team's going to have which ones is gonna have the better one
37:45
yeah because it it wasn't a matter of just consistent play throughout and I I mean you take that I I know this is
37:51
taking in a lot a pretty significant or essential portion of game game but you
37:58
take off one of those Islanders goals in the first right I mean after that first they
38:05
didn't play bad like offense maybe you wanted them to get going a little bit
38:10
more but defensively they weren't horrendous I mean no no I'll have to
38:17
defer to you on that because again I I I was watching I was not okay I like I saw
38:22
bits of the first two periods I watched the entirety of the third period but I saw bits of the first two periods but
38:28
literally every time I looked at the TV the Islanders were scoring and I was like all right I'm I'm done with this
38:35
because I'm gonna freak out um and I didn't want to do that around around my girlfriend's family
38:41
so jump like and go nuts when they win yeah no I mean that would have been fine
38:47
I would have been okay showing you know were there any Rangers fans at the table that could back you up no I I didn't
38:53
find out till after the game that her uncle when I when I said he's like you're Rangers well I'm saying during the game when they scored that first
39:00
goal no no I didn't see that goal oh you didn't see the first goal no I
39:07
didn't ah yeah no I didn't no the only parts of the game that I saw truly were
39:14
either nothing happening basically but almost every time I saw every I think I
39:19
I saw every Islanders go it was literally like every time I turn around like you gotta be kidding me so so we
39:24
won because you didn't watch no we we won because I broke a tooth on Candy
39:30
actually or or you didn't watch because you just said every time you watch the ERS were scoring so didn't watching
39:36
Rangers were winning sure yeah I guess that could be it too I mean it could be both it could be the twoth end this
39:44
Toth only one it was our uncle's birthday too and he's a Rangers Fan as well so so there you go he got the hatrick we had some birthday luck
39:50
working for us as well yeah so there was a lot of things it was a swirl it was a swirl as with most things in life it was
39:56
were all things yeah yeah there you go I just hope this gets ma going I mean
40:02
because it we've had some times past Seasons
40:07
where we've been we criticized him consistency when
40:14
MAA since when oh now you're being sarcastic okay uh I I'm listen I'm dead
40:21
tired I had what how long had like four trains to get back um man it was so hard
40:27
try like City Field is a mess like I had no idea where to go to get out of there
40:32
I'm like where the hell do I go and my Throne was like half Frozen so it was like loading like took five minutes to
40:38
load to Simply Google Maps so and then my fingers were frozen
40:43
so I couldn't really type so that was fun but yeah hopefully this gets uh m
40:51
going because I I I mean look the his points majority have been on the power play but just in general when you gain
40:57
confidence it doesn't matter how it just like builds up and uh I mean hey VC on
41:02
the first line you know a different element to it now yeah yeah for
41:09
sure uh so right now what happened I said I don't mind it for right now no no
41:16
no no it's funny because remember two years ago we were like oh shoot V's on a
41:22
PTO end up on the first line oh shoot and then like all right it's not a
41:27
actually it's the worst thing it's not the worst I mean for playoffs I that that would not be good but you know for
41:33
playoffs but for right now it's fine yeah it's fine we we we'll take it we're good um pretty I mean honestly like
41:39
after Chris jury's first year you take that out and his score his grading is oh
41:45
total 180 yeah was it with tro uh I mean the
41:51
term well with tro it wasn't the AV that was the problem the capit it was the term
41:57
yeah I'm honestly I can't be bothered to to to to care about the years 2027 right
42:02
now I really can't no no that's not what this is about right now
42:09
um this team is built for for now you know I may I don't mean just this year
42:15
now but like now next year the year after that that this is our window this
42:20
is our time um I really don't care I don't know what the Cap's going to look like I don't know what these players is
42:26
going to look like I don't know lineup's going to look like three four years out yeah it would have been nice to get
42:31
shter term with him sure but I'm not would have been way up I can't yeah I
42:37
cannot be concerned about that right now and if adding a couple years that far in the future help get troch here at reduce
42:45
salary that gives us freedom to uh get other players then that's just a good move so yeah it's also his style of play
42:54
was so so sorely needed yep like really really needed I
42:59
mean last year though he obviously no one really performed in the playoffs but that sandpaper hard noose type of style
43:06
and you have a guy like him on the second line and you have that third line of cool and kako um you're obvious not yeah and he
43:16
obviously and he um you're not gonna have that on every line uh because Top Line whatever right winger they would
43:21
even upgrade I doubt it's going to be a hard-nosed player but it you need those players you need the Jimmy VC's the will
43:28
coolies of the world when you're going on a playoff run those are the death players that a staning cup team needs
43:34
yep and uh it's nice to know that that we have uh check marked
43:41
and yeah yeah any any anything else I'm just trying to like try to explain this
43:47
crazy comeback and I'm like I can't explain it it's insane so let's just an an analyze it anyway like just analyze
43:54
it just not like no does that make any sense no it doesn't at all and no I I
44:01
don't have anything else to say at the moment um yeah no I'm I'm goodna go when's the last time there was this
44:07
crazy of a comeback um I don't know I have a bad
44:13
memory for like games my my the DVR in my head deletes games after about two
44:19
weeks so ESPN plus they don't delete games after two weeks do they they don't I I know that
44:26
then maybe it's maybe it's not ESPN it was the only nhv I don't know whatever it was it was they always deleted games
44:32
maybe not yeah I'm like I'm pretty sure you can go back fairly far yeah no no no no no I think that it wasn't ESPN plus I forgot what it was yeah yeah no but it
44:39
is like that like people some like oh that game in you know in November I was like [ __ ] I couldn't you don't have it
44:45
like on a USB you could just plug in and say oh wait wait hold on hold on hold on minut give me 30 minutes and I'll
44:51
remember again my brain is concerned with the here and the now like I remember Trends and players and stuff
44:58
like that but like specific game scores and and and stuff like that I'm like I don't
45:03
remember yeah I thought I thought for sure peso would score today oh did you bet on that that didn't
45:10
happen is that what happened yeah yeah big
45:15
surprised I well the thing is is a lot of my parlays involved no one scoring in
45:22
the first five minutes and wow and the Gus scored I'm like there goes 90% of my
45:27
uh parlays Ser you right well I I mean like in that type of
45:33
game I don't know it didn't seem like anything was really G to get going until later on just I don't know those games
45:39
always seem like a bit of a cler like outdoor games are weird they're weird yeah so I yeah they're to me they're way
45:45
harder to predict stuff than than almost any other game of the year I mean hockey's already a tough game to predict anyway but like those outdoor games
45:52
introduce so many more variables that don't exist in your average regular season game so so yeah I I I'm glad I
45:58
didn't lose any money on that game because I I don't think I would have sh together a winning parlay from what
46:03
happened tonight one person uh it was tweeted out I think won $133,000 he predicted
46:11
barzel uh he predicted like five goal scorers wow and he bet like 12 bucks
46:18
wow got like $12,000 or something roughly like that it's on Twitter somewhere I'm not gonna be able to find
46:24
it but that was nuts and and you know you know you're always like after I'm like that makes sense to
46:30
happen well you didn't think that in the beginning you know what I'm saying yeah look at that at the part like oh yeah
46:35
that would have make sense to do like and so the other 30,000 other options it would have in the beginning but there's a reason why you didn't pick this one
46:43
yeah um yeah I I'm just listen not a fan
46:48
of the Islanders but thank you Scott Mayfield appreciate it maybe a double agent could be we won't know but you
46:55
know third start of the game by Me by my book oh 100% 100% again I said at the
47:01
beginning of the podcast Corey Perry would be jealous yeah yeah he would be how many penalties the ANS
47:08
take I don't know five total four total five
47:13
total
47:24
again how many penties my box score isn't um yeah I know I can't see it
47:29
either on the box score here here it is box score um oh my gosh what it doesn't
47:38
have why does the box score not have power plays I don't
47:43
know what the heck oh here we go they wait they had F
47:49
five that's what I thought five but three of them three of them were in the third huh yep as is
47:56
ridiculous I I just could only imagine like if we if this was a swapped right
48:01
and we the Rangers we were up five four to one and we lost this game I I don't
48:07
think I don't think New York City would be here tomorrow this place is burning to the
48:13
ground this place is burning to the ground glad I don't have to worry about
48:19
that no no no thankfully thankfully no no and hey we won in hits so
48:25
according to all the GMS we won y yeah BL shots was 20 to n in favor
48:33
of the Islanders wow yeah like that's the thing like um in the end of the second yeah
48:40
what the Rangers had 19 well they corrected it after it was 20 to like 35 and all of a sudden at the end of the
48:47
game it's 41 to 38 wow like that's that's ridiculous that's
48:52
18 shots on goal yeah that's a big correction right there
48:58
it's so crazy though how the Rangers could go from just playing like a dead beer league team to like oh yeah I I
49:05
guess if you want us to play like one of the best teams in the world yeah sure why not we we'll do it for a period
49:10
we'll do it for last four minutes I guess it's it's just absurd how they
49:16
could flip the switch like that and just be a totally different team
49:21
yep um all right I think we've rambled off enough I think so you got anything
49:28
else uh let's see what do I
49:33
have no I don't I don't have anything that I'm allowed to say anyway I'll see some of you
49:42
later oh oh okay okay okay okay one more thing I and I and we should have done this in the beginning um what the hell
49:49
is with the stadium series starting at 3M what did the NHL what was the NHL's thought process okay we have all the
49:55
other outdoor games were at like night right and there's something that's called the Sun that exists right and
50:02
when the sun interacts with ice there's pretty prly where in the sky too like
50:08
they generally know where it's gonna be I don't even think you need like Advanced Equipment for that no not
50:15
typically no humans have known when it's gonna come up and when it's GNA go down for yeah most of human history yeah
50:24
pretty reliably too yeah so they didn't know the son exists apparently um and
50:30
they couldn't even bump it up like it wasn't like next day was like next day was tomorrow's President's Day like so
50:36
many people are off from work like it's not even like a question with that yeah so like what was their thought process
50:43
what was someone saying like I think 3M is a good idea because the son
50:49
apparently won't have an effect for the first time in a millennia and that'll be that because
50:55
like an hour and a half later the sun wasn't a problem or an hour later Sun wasn't a problem well it wasn't that's
51:00
the thing it wasn't 3 o'clock it started it started at 3:45 there was delay and even then there
51:06
was a little so like I I don't get it I don't know how the NHL could sometimes just be this dumb well it's the
51:14
NHL that's true and also also um half of the people I'm sure that are listening
51:21
to this are still waiting for their Stadium Series jerseys
51:26
after the game it's the NHL it's it's the NHL anything now that happens we just
51:34
address just by saying it's the NHL we don't even go deeper into it anymore it's the NHL that's it yep that's it why
