[Music] welcome to episode six of have a shift
0:28
day and today we are joined by very special guest Robie in macowski who's had a spectacular career as a sideline
0:35
and TV reporter in multiple cities and teams and we're so excited to have you
0:41
today welcome you know it's my pleasure to be here and uh one of the coolest things about my job let me say right up
0:46
front when I see the younger generation like the four ofie who Aspire I assume to get into broadcasting in some way
0:53
shape or form and you're doing this at the college level I think it's really cool to see you all getting realtime
0:59
experience with real guest producing real shows and it's something I wish I had a chance to
1:05
do in my earlier life uh and I'm really happy to be able to have a chance to go back and you know work with work with
1:11
the younger generation a little bit so thank you guys for asking me to come on I really appreciate it thank you so much
1:16
thank you for being here this is really exciting for us and we're really excited to have you so so just to get started we
1:22
want to learn about your your background here so you had a bachelor degrees in education from the University of Temple
1:28
like how did you transition to that into is the sports industry do you want to talk about that yeah that's a great question um so it's Temple University
1:35
Jake now make sure you get that right don't offend people at Temple University in Philadelphia and Beyond okay all
1:41
right we're F we're fits people here so I know right um no you know what um so
1:48
my mother was a teacher when I was growing up so I had my mother obviously is a role model and she was teaching uh growing up and then um when I was a kid
1:56
uh I I had a very deep passion for sports I grew up in South South Philadelphia right by the old veteran
2:02
Stadium where the Eagles and the Phillies used to play up until uh 2003 and then um uh I was
2:10
pursuing athletic training because I used to work for the Eagles as a trainer and a ball boy when I was a kid and then
2:15
I realized I wanted to take a different path in life I didn't want to work in a locker room my whole life so my mother
2:20
was teaching Elementary School at the time and I thought maybe I'll follow my mother's path so I decided to switch my
2:25
major I entered Temple uh as um as athletic training major and then decided
2:32
I wanted to go into teaching so I pursued a degree in elementary education only to realize my passion was in sports
2:39
not in teaching although I love teaching I wanted to make my living uh in sports and preferably in sports broadcasting
2:46
whether that was radio or TV um writing uh newspapers whatever it was that's
2:52
something I wanted to pursue so I realized after a while TV was my passion
2:57
so I had an elementary education degree and I actually went to to graduate school and dropped out of grad school a
3:02
couple classes short of my Master's Degree as long as well as the comprehensive exams which I really didn't think I had a a fair shot of
3:09
passing anyways so uh so I um so I just pursued television and things kind of
3:14
worked out for me so that's kind of why it looks a little weird in my bio I never took one broadcasting class in my
3:20
entire life thus why I said to you a couple moments ago I wish I had a chance at you're at your folks age to do this
3:25
to get valuable experience that you're getting right now um I just did it I
3:31
pursued teaching and I realized that teaching something I want to do later in life maybe in the coming years that's
3:36
something I like to pursue um like some of my colleagues and mentors and some of my bosses do they teach broadcasting
3:42
classes that's something I like to pursue down the road uh to kind of give back to the younger generation and help
3:47
them as much as I can but yeah that's kind of why it looks that way I want to pursue uh teaching to follow my mother's
3:53
footsteps only to realize that television is ultimately where my passion lied so that's kind of uh that's
3:59
where I am right now and that's why my bio reads the way it does I'd say it worked out just fine for you that yeah
4:05
oh yeah yeah I've been very lucky and very blessed to do this uh to to this point in my career and they haven't run me out completely yet so we're going to
4:11
give it uh going to give it as much uh get as long as much run as I can out of this yeah do you want to describe like
4:18
your first job in like television like happy to all right yeah yeah yeah
4:23
absolutely it's actually kind of a great story and it connects uh um in a pretty
4:28
unique way I don't know if you saw and and I say this none of this is to get political at all but I don't know if you
4:35
saw that president-elect Trump nominated Susie Wilds uh as his chief of staff the first woman Chief of Staff in the
4:41
history of the White House Susie's father was legendary broadcaster Pat sumerall and Jake I think I mentioned my
4:48
time working with Pat that was my first job so I actually worked with Susie's father I was his right-hand man for a
4:53
year wow so my first true job in broadcasting was a spotter slash right-and man for Pat sumerall now
5:03
assuming you folks being a little bit in a younger generation have you heard of John Madden you know John
5:09
M you know from I'm sure you know him from his broadcasting and obviously the video game is very very popular um uh
5:15
Pat sumerall and John Madden were the most famous broadcasting crew in football quite possibly in the history
5:22
of football so my job was to be Pat summerall's right-hand man and um
5:27
basically get him where he needed to go every Thursday Friday and Saturday for meetings in preparation for the Sunday
5:33
broadcast and I worked with a guy named Brian baldinger who was my mentor at the time who helped me get the job and baly
5:41
who if you follow his Twitter or x x account and Instagram baly NFL uh he's
5:46
known for baldi's breakdowns which has become very very popular in the NFL circles uh Pat sumerall and Brian
5:52
baldinger were broadcast Partners in the 2002 season that was the year after John Madden and Pat sumerall worked the Super
5:59
Bowl after the 01 season that was Tom Brady's first Super Bowl over the uh St Louis Rams which were known as the
6:06
greatest show on Turf oh yeah when I got that job Baldi said to me this is the Harvard grad school of television and
6:14
trer words have never been spoken to this day um I had a chance to work with the greatest football announcer
6:20
play-by-play announcer in the history of football and that was my first job in television I made $300 a game and I did
6:26
it for 17 weeks and it was the greatest 17 weeks of my entire career uh I didn't realize how much I would learn and
6:32
actually if you want to give me a second I have a picture I can show you can you stand by for about five seconds
6:38
definitely that's one way to start off a career yeah so I keep these uh pictures
6:43
here so I keep these on my uh just below my television in my living room to
6:48
remind me just how lucky I was in my life in my career and um I had a producer was a guy named Pete machesa he
6:55
was the game producer Pete is now the producer of the World Series on Fox has been doing that for about 20 years and
7:02
this is p I'm going show you a picture so this is Pat sumerall and I they let me tape my standups using Pat as my
7:10
partner so I have a picture so that is Susie Wild's father right there and that was taken in 2002 and then Pat later
7:18
invited us to his house for Christmas so this is in front of Pat's Christmas tree with Judy H who's executive of fox and
7:25
that's Mike Frank who's a director at Fox so I have some really cool memories of work with Pat suol for one year um
7:32
and it was the greatest experience of my life and that was quite the introduction into television and quite honestly that
7:38
is what drove my passion uh for television was to stay in the business whether I could make it on camera or
7:44
whether I would do it um from a production standpoint whether working as a producer director Graphics camera
7:51
editor um researcher whatever it is I just had a passion for sports and putting it on television and getting to
7:58
see how the sausages made for lack of a better term in TV as you are all learning right now in college um it's
8:05
quite a process and nobody steps on camera and does it by themselves so having a chance to work with Pat and
8:12
seeing how the people behind the camera made Pat look good and put him in a position to shine uh was really an
8:19
eye-opening experience for me uh so that was my first job was the 2002 season uh working for the NFL on Fox uh standing
8:26
side by side with Pat sumerall for every broadcast he did that season wow what a way to start your
8:32
career you should look up when you get time go on your favorite video site and
8:38
just research some of his clips and just watch Pat sumerall and John Madden do a game and you're going to be blown away
8:44
Blown Away by how just how fantastic a crew they were definitely wow do you want to go do
8:52
you do you want me to ask one M yeah you good all right you all can ask as much as you want all righty I I I'll go here
8:58
so all right so so throughout your I mean tremendous career like with everything that you've done um what is
9:04
the moment I guess like maybe a game or like a time like maybe an opportunity that you had that you're like wow I
9:09
really do got a good gig for myself um that like you kind of made it in a
9:14
sense so I get asked that question frequently and I don't think there's
9:19
ever a time where you think you quote unquote made it um because when I think
9:25
personally it's just my personal opinion I don't know if anybody else would say the same thing but but made it is kind
9:31
of a relative term because when you think you made it I think sometimes people can get a little bit um I don't
9:37
want to say complacent but just kind of feel like you can Coast a little bit right and that's never the case you never can Coast no matter how big you
9:43
think you are in this business because no matter how big you are or aren't somebody's always bigger you know
9:49
somebody's always had a better career somebody's making more money somebody's a little more famous somebody you know
9:55
has a few you know has endorsements that kind of thing so I wouldn't say I've ever quote unquote made it but I
10:01
will say is this I gotta I'll tell you a funny story so my first job full-time uh as a
10:08
broadcaster was um like in in television I did radio for a couple years but in TV
10:15
it was in 2009 I got a job as a TV reporter for the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Timberwolves working for Fox
10:21
Sports North and it was in the 2000 I want to say it was 2011 I don't know if
10:26
my dates are correct but uh it was either either 20 I'm almost positive as 2011 but uh at one time Ellen degenerous
10:34
the famous TV host was um making her rounds in Minneapolis Minnesota and as
10:41
part of that because I think she had changed like the time slot of her show and I remember uh my boss calling me
10:48
into his office and said hey Ellen degenerous is coming through town on a on a on a on a press on a on on a media
10:54
tour and you're were going to interview interview her during the game and I thought right that's kind of cool you
10:59
know like kind of a crossover you know somebody who doesn't you know not not known obviously she's not known for baseball but she's obviously known as a
11:06
very famous uh you know host and she's really funny and entertaining and people
11:12
love her so I thought it was pretty cool to interview Ellen degenerous so I go up
11:18
about an inning ahead of time to do the uh to get ready to meet with Ellen and talk to her about what we're going to
11:24
talk about on camera and you know she has like 8,000 people one person's like you know checking to make sure like not
11:29
one hair is out of place and one person's like dabbing her you know her cheeks with makeup to make sure the
11:34
powder is perfect and everything yeah and I pulled her aside I said Ellen can I chat with you for just a quick moment
11:40
you know just to go what we're going to talk about and I said hey you know I'm sure you've you know been to many
11:45
baseball games before you know figuring La you know you had to thrown out a first pitch or made an appearance she's like actually no it's first time I've
11:52
been at a baseball game and I'm like huh are are you kidding me never been basball game in your life like you're
11:58
Ellen freaking degenerous how have you not like been a guest of honor at a game somewhere in the United States of
12:03
America she said no I've never been to a game I said well you me if I ask you about being in your first baseball game
12:09
and I and she said sure no problem so we proceed to go on camera we start the interview and I said uh here's Ellen
12:16
degenerous and she's actually attending her first baseball game today and you're at Target Field what do you think of the
12:22
experience and she starts to explain it blah blah blah blah blah blah we do the interview so the next morning I wake up
12:30
I thought that was pretty cool experience I wake up I had probably 30 40 messages and everything was about
12:36
Ellen degenerous and I'm like I don't know what the hell happened between last night and when I woke up to have this
12:42
many messages but I don't understand I had messages from people all over the country messaging me it was on the front
12:50
page of yahoo.com that Ellen degenerous went to her first baseball game and they had the video of my interview with Ellen
12:55
degenerous that was that was my first like part of my language that was my first oh [ __ ] moment where I was like
13:01
yeah oh my God this is like all over the place so that was the first time I had felt like oh my goodness people on the
13:08
national stage saw me doing an interview on TV and that kind of me for a loop
13:15
thank God you asked that question that's awesome it's like it's like one of those came out of nowhere and and like there
13:20
clearly it involved no preparation in advance I had prepared a couple things I was going to ask her but when she said
13:26
that I was like well we have to talk about that I mean that's kind of cool yeah's first baseball game is at Target
13:32
Field and it was cool for the twins to see so it ended up being pretty cool so that was my first like holy heck that was my first kind of wild moment that I
13:38
had where I thought wow okay you interviewed somebody really big for the first time that's awesome thank you go
13:45
going off of that story I know you told this story in Roger's class but I think it'd be good for the podcast but the Shaquille O'Neal story do you remember
13:52
that one oh do I remember do I remember so yeah that was the first game I ever did as a reporter
13:59
um I had got I've been fortunate enough to know some people who connected me
14:04
to uh the executive producer at Fox Sports Arizona so that was my first job on television was Fox Sports Arizona in
14:11
uh March of 2008 and I'll never forget this I was work in a Phoenix Suns Memphis Grizzlies game and that was my
14:18
first assignment I was the TV reporter for that game and uh at the end of the
14:24
game uh the winning team you interview a player on the court as you see all the time after games you see basball you see
14:29
it hockey you see it in you know football last night you saw the interview with um uh the Ravens
14:36
defensive back I guess not relevant to a podcast but anyways but uh um so my
14:42
first ever postgame interview that I ever did my entire life was Shaquille O'Neal wow now Shaquille O'Neal is 7
14:50
foot one 7 foot two I mean the man is like just the most humongous man with the exception of Yao Ming that like
14:56
you'll ever see in your life and he he's an extremely extremely nice man
15:02
and here I am doing my first game as a reporter and I'm nervous as hell just to
15:08
do the game period so the Suns went in a blowout and the pr representative walks
15:14
up and says hey you're gonna interview Shaq and I'm like holy hell this is this is unable like this is the stuff dreams
15:20
are made of so at that time I was doing uh some work with the Phoenix the team
15:26
formerly known as the Phoenix Coyotes now the Utah Hockey Club but I had worked with the coyotes as a pre and
15:32
postgame radio host for a year and i' done a couple years in the minor leagues um with one of the coyotes Affiliates in
15:39
the uh Central Hockey League so after a couple years of radio experience I was able excuse me I was able to get a an
15:46
opportunity doing some part-time television work just to get me some demo tape material like you guys are doing now you know all this podcast are going
15:53
to go on your demo rails when you go to apply for jobs when you're out of college so my first thought is holy hell
16:00
I'm going to have Shaquille O'Neal on my demo tape but then I first thought I got to not screw this up first in order to
16:06
put it on my demo real so I walked up next to Shaq after
16:11
the game I said Shaq nice game thank you kind of shook his head he's dripping sweat he's wiping himself off with a
16:17
towel and I remember standing there and I can't really illustrate like this but I'm 6 foot 61 I'm holding my hand like
16:25
all the way up and my hand is like like shaky oh no I'm like hold Pretend This
16:32
is a microphone I'm using my TV remote but I'm like my hand is like shaking so
16:38
Shaq during the game I don't know if you remember there's a famous clip out there I'm sure you didn't see it but this is
16:43
on your favorite video search engine too where Shaq essentially a couple games earlier maybe a week earlier was diving
16:49
for a loose ball and cleared out the entire bench the loose ball was coming toward his bench I think I've seen that
16:56
went diving for it and I'm not kidding when I tell you five people just cleared out out the way they didn't want they
17:01
didn't want to get steamrolled by Shaq and I'm like oh my goodness so a
17:06
loose ball that game against the Grizzlies so the first I want to say we were playing San Antonio I can't remember exactly who it was but they
17:13
were in uh so they were running uh so a couple like a week or two earlier sha do
17:19
for a loose ball cleared out the bench this particular game Shaq was a loose
17:24
ball coming toward the bench Shaq was running toward it and everybody was like no no no no no so IID asked Shaq about
17:31
that play after game like Shaq you cleared out the bench a couple weeks ago man you almost did it again what were
17:36
you thinking and I'm holding the mic and my hand is just Shak as I'm doing it and
17:41
he answers a question I somehow stumbl my way through this interview and didn't screw it up so the next day I'm working
17:47
a Coyotes game I'm in the Press Box and everybody looks at me like a couple the other announcers and a couple media
17:53
members they look at me and they're like hey we have a new nickname for you I said what's that they go statue
17:59
Liberty they go you interviewing Shaq you look like the Statue of Liberty is I'm standing and I'm holding
18:06
the mic all the way up to sha and it's just barely under his chin and just the funniest story that was the first time I
18:12
ever did a walk-off interview in my entire life with sha wow I can find that tape it exists somewhere and I have I
18:18
have to find it yeah it's got to be out there somewhere yeah I'm gonna be looking for that we'll make sure we get
18:24
I actually think I've seen it before not even kidding don't wor my interview with the SHA with Shaq yeah what have to see
18:32
cuz I remember I was watching I don't remember what I was watching I was watching like a YouTube compilation or something one
18:39
day and I remember it showed like the original clip you were talking about
18:44
where like you know he go for the ball and like landed on like everyone and then it was like your interview after
18:51
and it showed the clip of like him running toward the the uh like the people like he was saying and everyone
18:57
was like no no no like moving out of the way and it was like you ask him about
19:03
that I just remember watching that I don't know when or where or like what video it was but I do remember that I do
19:10
tell it it it it was I cannot describe to you and I hope the four of you have a
19:16
chance to experience this in your life because that means you're in a big situation because I'll never forget the
19:22
nerves I had when I was interviewing him that day I was so scared I was prepared like I was ready I had done my homework
19:28
work I felt good physically I had energy you know what I mean like I was ready to go I was fired up but sometimes the big
19:34
moment is the big moment and it just scared the Daylights out of me for a little bit I was like okay there's a reason why I'm here so just proceed as
19:41
normal and as you know try to be as functional as normal as you could possibly be in this moment but I got to
19:47
tell you my hands were shaking no question about it yeah I I can attest to that cuz I I I have an internship with
19:53
the Penguins this semester and it was my first time in the locker room and Crosby had a big game so we had to get audio
19:59
from him and you like I can't stop smiling everyone's got a serious face and my hand shaking like oh my God this
20:05
is Sydney Crosby yep and there's not he showed us a picture he like that's my
20:10
hand oh did he really yeah you see his that time and another time Amari St was
20:16
on that team with Shaq on the Suns they were really good Steve Nash on two MVPs there they were they were really good at
20:23
that time they had James Jones was a role player uh they had some really good teams and uh I remember interviewing
20:30
Amari uh after a game and he was really really good too really nice man and uh I
20:35
remember um watching the clip they put on foxsports.com after the game because
20:40
they just put all the video after each game for the fans you know they can watch all the interviews and stuff and I watch it like five times and I thought
20:47
it was the coolest thing ever so yeah I was telling all my friends like here watch this Mom and Dad check this
20:52
out so I know Jake believe me I've been there brother I've been there yeah I'm not the only one that's awesome no you
20:58
are definitely not I mean I'm a little bit older than you 20 years later but it's the same experience yeah all right
21:05
well that makes me feel better when I get my turn oh yeah so whenever it came
21:10
to you working for your those various NHL teams you were with what did A Day in the Life look like for you on a game
21:16
day uh do you mean specifically for hockey yeah for Sports in general for
21:22
hockey podcast yeah so hockey is a little bit uh kind of a little bit different monster than baseball because hockey has the morning skate and then
21:29
you have kind of a gap in the day you go back home kind of eat lunch take a nap get ready whatever you do not so much
21:34
the player routine but same for broadcasters you get there um you get a little bit of um you know you get a
21:41
little bit of time you know you get there for morning skate usually 10 o'clock somewhere around there so I'd
21:46
get up uh in enough time to get to the morning skate and that's where you get a lot of your stuff so you would meet with the uh the two other announcers the
21:53
play-by-play guy you meet with the analyst and then the producer was there as well and usually the graphics person
21:59
the director is there and um they you kind of sit there in the morning skate
22:05
if I'm being honest it's pretty useless I mean I I I
22:10
don't see the purpose of the morning skate now of course to get the blood flowing for the players get moving a little bit but like you're not going to
22:17
go too hard because you don't want anybody to get hurt you don't want anybody taking a puck off the ankle you don't anybody getting whacked in the
22:23
shin you know what I'm saying you don't need somebody you know you know you just you're not going to go that hard right
22:28
you're just not now you might look up some line Combos and stuff like that but really it's just a reason people to get
22:33
together and drink coffee in the morning is what it is but it's good to get us together uh to have a little meeting and
22:39
then afterward you go in a locker room and Jake I'm sure is quite familiar with this after morning SK you go in there's
22:46
a media availability that happens because when you go back to the arena before the game there is no locker room
22:51
availability until the game is over but if you need a player for a pregame interview the folks in the pr staff will
22:57
be more than happy to accommodate you and bring a player out from the locker room into the hallway so a day in the
23:03
life would look like this I'd wake up if I had to be there at 10 I'd wake up about 9: I'd get in my car about 9:30 940 get to the arena we discuss what we
23:11
were talking about now some of it is done on my couch tonight before where you look at potential story lines you
23:17
look at what teams are playing are there any connections is there a former player on the other team is there a player on
23:23
your team that used to play for the other team um you know is somebody say for example Jake gensel the I know the
23:31
hurricanes and Panthers or hurricanes and Penguins played last night uh I know they I think they were in Carolina but
23:37
just say they were in Pittsburgh right it'd be Jake gensel coming back to Pittsburgh he won a Stanley Cup he
23:42
became a star player you know that kind of thing um so maybe that's a storyline maybe you have something going on with
23:48
um you know a player has a charity event going um you know you know whatever
23:53
three or four hits that you have during the game prepared you go over those go over those with the announcers and with
24:00
the producer and then everybody kind of comes together with a consensus okay we like this we like this uh this is we
24:05
like it but this is like kind of if we have a boring game or if we have a blowout of a game um we'll go over that
24:11
so we kind of finalize what the hits are then you go in and get your sound usually that's for a pregame hit so
24:18
whatever the storyline is Jake gensel returns to Pittsburgh we all talk to Jak gensel and we get our sound go back to
24:25
the studio log the sound get it to an editor put it together whether it's a package or a sound bite I'd go home I'd
24:32
eat some lunch take an nap then I'd go back to the arena at about 4:30
24:38
somewhere around there um go to the arena kind of reset check in with the truck again has anything changed did any
24:44
news break are there any surprises in the lineup is there a goalie change whatever happened and then we get in we
24:51
get ready for the game and the producer will say Hey you know here's what I'm thinking for your first hit you're going to do it at the under4 break of the
24:58
first period be in position two minutes early okay no problem um get ready and
25:03
do that and you do the game after the game's over you do the post game go home now if you're on a back to back usually
25:10
I'll call the producer on my way home from the arena because the producer is done before you are because you're in
25:16
the clubhouse doing postgame sound so they'll go home and they'll say Hey you know uh just give me a call when you're
25:22
done um but if you have like a day or two between games just enjoy your night blow off some steam go go out have a
25:28
couple beers go home fall asleep do whatever you do at night and um we'll
25:33
regroup tomorrow and talk about it or we'll talk tomorrow night and then you get back at it the next day so it's uh
25:39
pretty routine but hockey is kind of cool and that you're kind of up early do
25:44
a little bit of work get all that done then you kind of have a couple hours to yourself and then you go and get ready for the game baseball's a little bit
25:51
different you're getting there at like three o'clock but I'm not there in the morning I'm at home all morning and I go
25:56
to the ballpark at three o'clock and then you're there the whole day to get everything done you get your sound go back to the studio put it together get
26:03
it to an editor and then get back get a bite to eat at press dining and then go
26:09
do the game so hockey and baseball are completely different monsters in terms of how you approach it from a TV
26:14
standpoint but um nonetheless it's a pretty busy day that is kind of all encompassing starts at 9: in the morning
26:21
ends at 10 o'clock at night 10:30 at night but uh it's kind of broken up and you get you know you get a few hours
26:27
here and there to yourself yeah well when interviewing like hockey players do you have to approach them
26:32
differently to get like some personality out of their answers and like why do you thinkt why do you think like hockey
26:38
struggles to promote their Stars you know Jake that's a tremendous question uh I I wish I had an answer for you but
26:45
for whatever reason hockey players live in this like bubble where everybody's afraid to be themselves they're afraid
26:51
to show a personality they're afraid to like say something controversial because they don't want to upset the apple cart
26:58
and I'm not saying people should upset the apple cart because you never want to step out of
27:03
line you're a team you're in you're in unison with one another you know you're all focusing and pulling in the same
27:09
direction to try to win a Stanley Cup you know in the regular season you're fighting for a playoff spot then you know so like yes you want to be
27:15
respectful what they're doing of course but what's sells in sports Personality
27:21
It's Entertainment we're in the entertainment bit we're in the candy store life we're not curing cancer we're
27:26
not you know we're not we're not running the government you know what I mean like like these are
27:32
millionaires playing a kid's game don't ever lose sight of that you know like yes Sydney Crosby is arguably I you know
27:40
this a discussion for another day we know cros in the history of the sport right yeah that's not up for debate he's a
27:48
great hockey player Sydney Crosby is not curing cancer so let's get some personality out him and just and and
27:54
maybe if it's not in his DNA that's okay don't force it out of him but there some entertaining guys you look at Evy Malin
28:00
he's an entertaining guy he's a funny dude Mark Andre flurry he's a prankster hilarious guy his teammates love him
28:07
he's a great guy right like why not show that hockey players are so hard watch a
28:13
hockey player do an interview between periods it's all the same canned garbage y every interview we gotta play hard we
28:20
got to get pucks deep and hopefully get to two points I freaking know that I know you want to get points you get
28:26
pucks deep what the hell does that mean get pucks deep a show me something you know and I like
28:32
you know like John tarella right like I know he kind of rub some people the wrong way but the man is honest he tells
28:38
you the truth definitely he's controversial because he's honest he gives you the truth wrong with telling
28:44
the truth you know yeah sometimes disagreements happen in a locker room but look at all of our own houses does
28:50
anybody in their own house agree on everything oh you know what I'm saying like the for
28:56
you you might have disagreements they happen it's okay you can work through them you know we're roommates
29:04
soe we're roommates we have we have some disagreements every now and then right exactly I love you but but ultimately
29:11
you realize you have respect for one another and your friends and you get along and you're going to be friends for life and 20 years down the road when you
29:17
all have families you're going to be like hey man remember those days when we used to argue over who ate the macaroni and cheese late at night when you were
29:22
drunk you know what I'm saying I know you guys drink iced tea and water all yeah definitely
29:30
definitely no but um I just wish hockey players would show a little more personality and be a little more appealing to the fans in public and I
29:36
mean that seriously when you look at hockey right you know Paul biset you know
29:43
who nasty that man is a self-described grocery stick a fourth
29:48
line plug that's what he referred to himself as over the years right yeah but the guy is a huge personality and look
29:55
how he's making his living exactly yeah you know what I'm saying yeah man making
30:00
seven figures a year because he's funny and he showed it and people are drawn to
30:06
guy like Biz he knows the game he played the game at the highest level was he a great player no he wasn't but you know
30:13
what he was he was a guy that everybody wanted around because he brought the team together he got people out for
30:18
drinks for dinner you know he got guys together for coffee you know and he was
30:23
an entertaining guy in the locker room and he's got a big personality and he showed it and now he's making a
30:29
living doing it I wish there were more people like Biz in hockey who could be themselves oh yeah I don't know if that
30:34
makes sense and I love hockey I love hockey I love the sport I love the players they're the nicest most
30:40
accessible guys that are out there but I just wish they would show a little more personality on camera AG because fans be
30:46
drawn to it and hockey would be more popular in the mainstream yeah going off of that what I don't know if you've seen
30:52
it before but um the NHL's released the the series on Amazon
30:58
on um the what I haven't watched yet but I know what you're talking about is that
31:03
what you're talking about yeah yeah the oh my God yeah face off uh yeah the face
31:09
off series I was going to ask like if you had like obviously you just said you haven't seen it but I was going to ask
31:15
if you like an opinion on it cuz it really does like show more personality
31:20
of the players who they featuring it so so take that one clip I I saw the one
31:26
teaser clip that they did right McDavid yeah McDavid where he like he lost his
31:31
marbles in the club the lock room he lost his marbles he went nuts screaming bombs dig in
31:37
that's who Conor McDavid is you know what I'm saying yeah watch Conor mcdavid's interviews right I don't think
31:44
there's a more boring personality for a superstar than Conor McDavid and by all
31:49
accounts he's a wonderful guy he's a wonderful teammate people love him but why can't we see a little more of that
31:56
on him like like that's the true where he he he blew his top and
32:01
obviously you know you're a series away from winning the Stanley Cup bringing the Stanley Cup
32:07
back to Edmonton for the first time since the Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier years we're talking in the 80s that's a
32:14
great hockey Town that's stared for a winner and they finally have two stars in dyle and McDavid
32:22
and imagine McDavid showing his true personality out there just how popular
32:27
he would be think about this if you got four people walk into a room at a Gayla
32:33
at a big event you got Conor McDavid you got Mike Trout you got LeBron James and
32:39
you got Aaron judge who's gonna get noticed LeBron and judge LeBron bang
32:44
stop saying judge you know what I'm saying why is that LeBron's everywhere yeah exactly
32:50
Aaron judge is everywhere where do you see Conor McDavid showing up making people laugh where do you see Mike Trout
32:56
showing up on a commercial making people laugh right exactly you don't see it no
33:01
no so I wish we had more of that does that make sense or am I you tell me I agree that makes compl allow to disagree
33:07
with me I agree with that completely because I feel like people like LeBron James you see them not only on commercials but
33:13
they're so big into social media and they're so big into these other different platforms that not only they
33:18
can they they show themselves not just on the court but it it brings a lot of the younger audience in so they get more
33:25
noticed and they become more person show him dancing he's laughing he's having a good time he's messing with his buddies
33:31
like yeah you know what I mean like people are drawn to that you look at I mean how many entertaining personalities
33:37
I mean there's so many entertaining Personalities in sports out there with social media presences obviously that
33:42
goes a very long way especially with a younger generation with social media but like like I I just wish we would see
33:49
that more in hockey I wish we'd see that more in baseball with the Stars you know because baseball has some great personalities great personalities I've
33:56
been doing baseball for 16 years years I can't tell you how many funny characters I've come across in the game I just wish
34:03
we could put them on TV all the time because fans would love to see that awesome yeah I know you have a I
34:09
know you have a lot of moments on camera but like what's your best moment off the camera like can you tell us the story
34:15
there you go oh man I don't I'd have to think about that there are so many of
34:21
them there there well I mean crazy stuff happens sometimes you know you set up a
34:26
big interview and your mic micophone doesn't work I mean you know like you guys you know had to make sure you had
34:32
the audio functioning before he went on camera here right like why are you looking at me cuz he said when you're
34:38
interviewing someone and your mic doesn't work and that literally happened to you last month that's at that soccer
34:44
game true what happened tell us what happened um so it was the first time we were doing sideline reporting for a
34:50
soccer broadcast this season and they gave me a wireless mic to use cuz I was doing it it was something I had wanted
34:55
to do this year and postgame after the men's soccer game they won I went down to the field to interview one of the
35:02
players and I'm I had no way to communicate with the people on the broadcast upstairs very well and so I
35:09
just did the interview like normal I knew that like I had started and I was on camera but I get up there and they
35:14
were saying like yeah your mic did not work I was like oh my gosh and it was on I made sure it was on but it's just our
35:21
Tech was not working apparently yeah welcome welcome to welcome to television and my only advice is get used to it
35:28
because that stuff happens all the time wonderful we and what they do is in in television so what they'll do is they'll
35:34
have a um they'll have a um the wireless mic right like you had and then we'll
35:41
have a wired mic as a backup just for that exact reason now obviously the resources might be a bit different you
35:46
know working at the college level as opposed to you know a major league broadcast but uh we'll have a hardwire
35:52
mic at all times ready in case it doesn't work so we have to quick disconnect disc connect the mic grab the
35:58
mic flag and put it on the on the hardwire mic this way there's no guarantees but the problem with the hardwire mic is physically you're you
36:05
have physical limitations you can only go so far with that whereas with a wireless mic you can just climb through the crowd and walk anywhere you want to
36:11
go um so stuff like that happens all the time Jake I wish I had a solid answer I'd have to think about that I apologize
36:17
I have a solid answer but in terms of that but there's all kinds of fire drills that happen all the time oh yeah
36:23
know guys like there are times sometimes a guest is late and you're like oh my God we're up in one out like I don't
36:30
know what the hell to do like we have this situated and sometimes you got to have you know the play byplay guy take
36:35
it out of break instead of you and they toss you because somebody's late or like one time some dude was like they had a
36:41
perogue eatting contest at a pirates game one time I'm like are you like can I make sure you're not gonna puke before
36:47
I put you on camera I don't need to go around the internet for the next week with this viral clip like let's just
36:54
make sure you're okay take a drink of water and then like take your time I'll give you a minute and then we'll
36:59
talk to you like a lot of that kind of stuff happens behind the scenes quite a bit and the other thing too is like
37:05
between I'll tell you a funny one the funniest things are like the funniest things like if I'm up in the booth are
37:11
PE breaks between Innings so like there times like a play-by-play guy will like
37:16
like will get on the talk back and talk to the producer be like hey can he take us the break they call the third out and
37:22
they drop their headset and they Sprint to the bathroom cu C Park you got to go a good
37:29
like 100 feet to the bathroom and if the urinals are taken you are in
37:35
trouble take the fastest pee of your life and sometimes like there are times like I'd have to pee in the eighth
37:40
inning and the Pirates are winning or like it's a one-run game and I'm like I really have to pee I'm like dude I'm
37:46
hauling ass to the bathroom because like you don't want to be doing interview when you have to pee
37:53
trust me oh yeah I don't know if that's below the belt but I swear to God that happens all that's just what I needed
37:58
there that's awesome there there are times like I see Joe Black like sprinting I'm like oh he's in a commercial
38:04
break it happens everybody believe me and you'll hear a lot of broadcasters say like the best thing about the booth
38:10
in this city is the bathroom is right next door to the booth like they take like five steps to get
38:16
there so that that's the truth man I'm just giving you the truth it happens all the time that's what we want yeah we
38:21
love the truth we need the truth I don't know how you follow up talking about PE bre
38:28
I guess I'll go back to your hockey working with the wild coyotes golden knights and the penguins like who who
38:34
stood out to you I was like the best teammate or leader like of a team for you you're talking about players right
38:39
yeah players oh man I would say well coyotes Shane Don um was the leader of
38:48
that franchise his son Josh is now playing on that team or I think he's up and down between the minor leagues and the the NHL team yeah but uh Shane Don
38:56
was the most wonderful representative of a franchise I think I've ever come across in my entire life um the way he
39:01
represented the team on the ice he was a great player he was a captain for a number of years he came with the team from Winnipeg to Phoenix and then he
39:09
proceeded to get crapped on by the ownership and they chased him out which is actually a very very much a crying
39:14
shame but he uh uh he was a great leader and he was a great representative he
39:20
never said no to a fan an autograph a photo um the way he led that franchise
39:26
is uh something that should be followed by every every every leader should look
39:33
at Shane Don and look at how you lead a franchise um look maybe he's not the
39:38
most points wise you know look the guy's not going in the Hall of Fame but he was a damn good player you know and played a
39:46
ton of games all in a coyote SL Jets uniform he was a great leader uh I think
39:51
when you look at the Penguins I mean come on I mean look at the big four you know L Tang malan Sid and obviously
39:57
Andre flurry and then you had a veteran team now with the gold Knights I only worked with them for the first month of
40:03
their existence so I don't have a ton of experience there that I can really speak to um but Mark Andre obviously was a was
40:11
was a key cog in that team making a finals run in their first year um obviously wasn't there when they won the
40:17
cup two seasons ago but uh he helped kind of set the tone there along with a couple other veteran guys that they had
40:22
you know com to a new expansion team and um you know with the Penguins I mean I mean I I don't think along the lines of
40:30
Shane Don I don't think there is a more humble generous uh polite respectful
40:36
Superstar than Sydney Crosby he is as good as they get as a human and he is as
40:41
good as they get as a hockey player and he is as good as they get as a leader he's obviously not very vocal he's not
40:47
like a you know a real loud boisterous guy but you know Andrew McCutchen's not a loud boisterous guy and he's a leader
40:52
in the Pirates Clubhouse you know he leads by example he doesn't he's not a big raw ra die um but some players lead
41:01
by example some players are fiery and they they yell and scream a lot I've seen them all but I'd probably have to
41:07
say Sydney Crosby and Shane D probably by far the two best leaders I've ever come across in my career in hockey and
41:14
and I don't think there's a close third uh behind those two yeah awesome you
41:20
mentioned working your first the first month in Vegas like how crazy was that
41:25
atmosphere in Vegas and did you know like this is a hockey town now
41:32
so there's a little bit of emotion behind it um if you remember there was a shooting that took place October 1st
41:39
2017 yeah uh where a bunch of people lost their lives in a shooting uh so you
41:44
have to kind of know a little bit of the context going into it um the first game
41:49
was played October 6th five days later in Dallas so we had a back toback so I flew we were in Washington DC it was a
41:56
Sunday October 1st 2017 I'll never forget it that was the night that the shooting happened and obviously it's a
42:02
very very very sad situation it was a country music concert and someone um shot out of the windows at a manlay Bay
42:09
Hotel and uh and killed a bunch of people uh so that's obviously a very heavy topic to discuss um and that my
42:16
intent is not to go there but that kind of ties into the emotion of how hockey kind of came together quickly in Vegas
42:23
so we had a backtack I flew that Wednesday to meet a team in Dallas had a
42:28
game in Dallas James Neil scored both goals in the first ever game for the Vegas gold Knights they won two to one at Dallas then they went to um Phoenix
42:37
the next day beat the coyotes in another low-scoring game I think James Neil scored a game-winning goal again first two games if I remember correctly and
42:44
then we flew to Vegas for the first game uh in Vegas golden kns history which was
42:50
was a home and home against coyotes so there was a remembrance of the Vegas
42:57
shooting that happened before the game they brought out all the First Responders that helped the nurses the
43:03
doctors the medical assistants um everyone that helped physical therapist
43:08
everyone that helped everyone who was affected by that tragedy and I will never forget during
43:16
intros they brought out all the um the First Responders to stand out there with
43:21
the coyotes players or with the gold Knight's players and then the entire coyotes team skated behind behind the
43:27
coyotes or behind the golden knights and stood behind them as a show of support and it was one of the most special
43:33
moments I've ever experienced in my life and Derek England who is a former penguin was on that was that on that
43:40
inaugural roster for um for the gold Knights and he married a girl from Vegas
43:45
so Derek England makes his home in Vegas I don't know if he still does but at the time he was not only playing for the
43:50
gold nights but he lived in Vegas full time year round
43:56
and I remember Derek taking the microphone and speaking about how Vegas strong and how
44:02
Vegas comes you know we pull together in tough times like this and that shooting
44:07
kind of galvanized a city and a hockey team and for some reason it was kind of
44:13
magical to see it come together that first month they had eight home games uh they were home for three straight weeks
44:19
and they played really well yeah they just kind of shocked the hockey world by just getting off to a hot start Mark
44:24
Andre flurry got hurt they were three or four goalies deep at that time but somehow they just kept scoring they just kept winning and we're like how the hell
44:31
is this happening why is this team winning is there a higher power involved is it like like what is going on here as
44:37
it turns out they're pretty talented hockey team pretty good and uh they kind of came together so I think it was a
44:43
combination that strategy kind of bringing a city and a franchise together where they kind of bonded you saw
44:49
players making appearances um at hospitals um at rehab facilities they
44:54
were bringing you know you know hat and pucks and you know signing autographs
45:00
and taking pictures you kind of ingratiated yourself into a brand new community now I had done that in the
45:05
minor leagues in northern Arizona with a team called the Arizona Sundogs where hockey was new in northern Arizona it
45:11
wasn't new to Arizona it was hockey was a decade in in Phoenix but in like Flagstaff and Prescot Valley Chino
45:17
Valley and the like two hours Northwest like people don't know really what the hell hockey was and then we won the
45:23
championship our second year of existence in the minor leagues and it kind of brought a city and a team together so I saw it obviously very very
45:30
micro level but then see it on the scale in Vegas and not di mention come on man
45:36
team's going into Vegas think they're not gonna have some fun the night before game you knowe trip to Vegas stay to Bellagio come on so I think it was kind
45:43
of combination of everything and it was really really cool to see it happen uh I only did the first 11 games of their existence but nonetheless it was a real
45:50
cool experience especially that first ever game that they played between the coyotes and um uh the coyotes and the
45:57
gold kns the night they paid tribute uh to the victims of that shooting so it was a real cool experience there awesome
46:03
that's awesome um do you mind if yeah here you go um yeah so with um us for
46:09
being people in uh sports like broadcasting and communication wanting to eventually get into a spot like you
46:15
one day what's the best advice you can give for people like us who just want to be in a career like like you had or like
46:22
you have right now yeah well you're all doing it right now like you are doing what I would tell people
46:29
to do and that's get real life experience because nobody is a polished product the first time they step on the
46:35
air zero percent no one is I wasn't none of you are you got to work at it you got
46:40
to work you need reps you need to get better you need to experience like you know you know like you did with with the
46:46
busted microphone you know after a soccer game you got to learn how to react to tough situations because
46:51
they're going to happen and they're going to happen at the highest level potentially at the most critical moment so what are you going to do are you are
46:57
you going to freak out sorry it's my alarm for my next meeting but uh like what are you going to do are you going to go nuts are you going to flip out or
47:04
are you going to stay calm cool and collected you have to learn real life experience so what I always say to
47:10
people is just do it whether you're doing an interview that doesn't make air
47:15
get the Reps of doing an interview you guys are doing a podcast it's a real live podcast that you're doing I at some
47:22
point in time is am going to do a podcast promote a book that I'm writing so I'm going to have to learn how to
47:28
work the equipment I'm going to have snafus because I don't I'm not really good at the technical side of it
47:33
so real life experience matters more than anything else in my opinion just do interviews get reps get comfortable on
47:40
camera get comfortable with headphones on your ears get comfortable with a microphone in front of you just get
47:45
comfortable because you have to make it as natural as you possibly can because when people are watching they're going
47:52
to notice if you're not comfortable on camera and it's going to make them uncomfortable watching you when you have Awkward Moment on camera it's awkward
47:58
for them to watch I'm sure you've seen it all the time you see broadcast happen you see awkward moments you're like o
48:04
want Channel like that stuff happens man it's real life it happens crazy stuff
48:09
happens in our business so get reps just do it do it do it as much as you
48:14
possibly can do it don't make decisions based on money you get a chance to do a gig you do it pays you 50 bucks to work
48:21
10 hours go do it Whatever It Is internship Jake you're interning go do it just get as many real life reps as
48:28
you possibly can because I'll tell you right now the four of you that are college student you're all still in
48:34
college right yeah correct y so the four of you in college you have more reps now in college today than I ever had my
48:40
whole life in college so remember that you're getting valuable experience doing what you're doing right now by
48:46
interviewing people and you're learning your craft and you're perfecting your craft at a very young age by the time
48:53
you're 25 26 27 30 you're going to look at these tapes and you're going to laugh look at how terrible I was and the fact
49:01
is none of you were terrible you just need some work you know what I'm saying you need polishing you need reps you
49:07
need to get comfortable in your own skin you need to get comfortable and when I say comfortable in your own skin I mean professionally you know what I mean like
49:12
on camera you know you need to get comfortable you learn how to dress learn how to carry yourself learn how to smile
49:18
learn how to shake hands with people learn how to walk up to people and introduce yourself and just say hey my
49:24
name is Robbie and macowski and I'm working working the sideline for this broadcast May I please have a moment to
49:30
ask you a couple questions about your team get comfortable talking to coaches get comfortable talking to players you
49:36
know kind of have an idea what their schedule is and how much time they do or don't have you see guy running hey I
49:41
just need you for 30 seconds I need as one thing in a third down situation you know what do you want to attack what are
49:48
your goals you know or you're in soccer hey you got a great team their goal tender is fantastic how do you think you can break through on them you know like
49:55
what's your plan of attack don't give away to strategy but can you just give us a little bit of insight on what you're trying to accomplish here on
50:00
offense or how you're trying to prevent the other team from scoring you know how you going to strengthen your defense you
50:05
know just little things learn to develop relationships because once you do that and you earn their trust you're going to
50:11
really really excel in this business 100% thank you so much and before we let
50:17
you go could you tell us and any of our listeners about this book that you're working on yeah no thank you for asking
50:23
uh I decided to take a chance on myself um I I I love ballparks I've had long
50:28
have had a passion for baseball stadiums I love how they tie into a city's local flavor and Vibe so what I did was uh
50:36
just bought a camera bought a digital camera take pictures something fit in my pocket and thought it was going to be
50:42
kind of a cool thing to maybe put together an album for myself when my career was over and then
50:47
I met an author along the way and decided to put together a coffee table photo book with my photos and stories
50:55
from those associated with the experience at every ballpark in Major League Baseball um so it's going to
51:00
launch uh for pre-sale uh when spring training opens in mid-February and the physical book is going to launch at the
51:06
allstar break in July so uh just stay tuned I'll put it out when I have more information available I mean we're still
51:12
in the not infantry but we're about like we're kind of in the toddler stages if
51:17
you will of putting this book together but it's going to be coffee table photo book with stories uh from those
51:23
associated with the biggest moments um you know as much as we can with each ballpark so uh for example I interviewed
51:29
the guy that gave up Barry Bond's 756th home run back in 2007 Mike
51:34
bassic it was the biggest story in sports at the time when he broke Hank aon's home run record uh for the
51:40
all-time record in homers and I talked to the guy who gave up that Homer and he gave me great detail what that night was
51:45
like so you're going to get stuff that you otherwise are not really going to hear um you know that you're not really
51:52
going to get so I tried to get a lot of firsthand accounts from those who witnessed some of the biggest moments at each ballpark in Major League Baseball
51:58
and then we're going to have QR codes in each ballpark that link to a site with the rest of the photos because I have
52:04
over 6,000 photos that you can look at of each Ballpark and then the longer versions of each story so it's going to
52:09
make you laugh some of it's going to make you cry if you're a fan of a certain team because maybe your team didn't win a big game but uh but it's
52:15
going to be pretty cool so we're trying to give you you know a big uh you know a big tour around Major League Baseball
52:21
firsthand from the comfort of your own home we're going to interview about 130 140 people and put them all in this book
52:27
it's going to be a pretty cool project all right one last question before you go uh what do PNC Park rank on your
52:33
alltime ball parks oh it's number one absolutely just wanted to make sure yeah
52:39
no and I don't say that because I'm a homer people ask I'm gonna say PNC Park um uh AT&T which well it's not AT&T it's
52:45
Oracle park now in San Francisco I love Kansas City because I think the fountains are just so so cool uh Denver
52:51
Colorado is really beautiful um I like Cleveland for some reason I like how you go into a stadium you go down into the
52:57
stadium that's kind of cool I like the way it's structured with the old school light towers and stuff uh there are so
53:03
many beautiful ballparks around Major League Baseball San Diego is a gorgeous Place Seattle's beautiful um it's just
53:09
you're going to get some great pictures and see some great ballparks and get some access photos too you know what
53:15
does it look like when the player steps out of the clubhouse and walks to the Dugout you know I took pictures of how skinny the tunnel is a Fenway Park and
53:22
just how small that Dugout is in Fenway Park and so you're going to get an up close and personal look at all the ballparks around Major League Baseball
53:29
that's awesome that's awesome we'll definitely look forward to that book and you know read it yeah we got to
53:36
definitely yeah but uh time I'm happy to come back any time you one for sure we really appreciate your time today so
53:42
much thank you so much for joining us my pleasure good luck to you all thank you Robie have a wonderful day have a great

54:07

54:13
was just a good conversation and good guy so it was really we'll definitely try to bring in more people for the podcast too maybe when uh maybe later on
54:21
um when the book is over we could see how it's you know stuff like that we could check in on it and again awesome
54:29
great Insight here we go yeah let's go I'm fired up now that was awesome thank you Jake for that guys yeah good job
54:36
Jake thank you all right let's do it time is 12:01 let's do this thing um but before we continue quick note we um will
54:42
not have a show next week because why Megan cuz we're going on a road
54:49
trip we sponsor no we don't oh enterprise Enterprise entprise been cool
54:54
enough to send a hockey Roach What Choosing no I'm kidding I'm kidding yeah and we chose
54:59
Columbus the closest place we may not never have a show after this cuz we're
55:05
Megan's going to have a rough tough time with us three uh I'm driving um so just don't look at the
55:12
playlist pray for me I'm going to look at the playlist we're playing the music from my phone no you can't look at it's
55:19
it's a it's got to be surprise it has to be a surprise it's a good playlist I've already looked at the playlist guys when's the last time you looked at it
55:25
maybe either yesterday or 2 days ago okay all
55:32
[Music] right okay let's just how about this let's just wait until the car ride and
55:38
then we'll just you know put it on a shuffle and it'll be fantastic I was going to shuffle it anyways what if I great that's how a playlist works you
55:44
Shuffle it there some bangers in that yeah heavy hitting songs like they
55:49
really make you feel like you're I might need to throw in some more just to keep covered yeah I think I think we got we
55:56
can make it work anyway let's continue okay um pray for me we're not going to have show next week we will have a vlog
56:01
though cuz of course we're going to Vlog this it does Vlog Vlog Vlog Vlog Vlog V Vlog so uh never mind I'm not going to
56:09
say it cuz you'll kill me if I do um but before we get into trivia for this week
56:15
um we didn't want to go too much into the Penguins one because um you want to
56:20
di one there's not much to talk about two recording date and release date are different this week I just want to say
56:26
things about this team number one yeah just get any I forgot to say this after the last
56:32
podcast and he asked for a shout out my boy Levi he came to the Pence d uh Ducks
56:37
game got to meet him for the first time ever after that game oh really I didn't yeah I got to meet him after that game
56:43
so that was awesome Levi great meeting you in po uh he got mad that I didn't
56:48
shout him out when we talked about the game last uh so just want to get that out there uh secondly this is requested
56:55
from my dad dad um er Carlson what are you doing thanks Nick Dad thank you we
57:03
ask a lot of players I just want to kind I just want to share a
57:09
specific yeah cuz he what did he forgot what he said yeah this uh so Sebastian
57:14
Oro has the puck right yeah what is brother doing so Megan
57:20
Sebastian or is the Pu right what is er hson doing that pict how many lik that
57:26
me a quick s ni has editing power today which one I'm scared to put that put that put that in please can you can you
57:32
send me that of course I can send you that thanks buddy uh oh and Sydney cley
57:38
also broke the record for most face off he did posi did it's awesome also I do
57:44
have one more positive of last most face off wins history NHL we outshot the
57:49
hurricanes and lost by four mhm Kev got less than 20 shots by the way 18 18
57:55
shots it's going to be a long I will say this is go go ahead you go ahead you go ahead um about the Penguins I believe
58:02
that like I'm just it's um we can't say you know we're frustrated over and over again cuz we all know we are and but
58:10
they all look like and I I they all just
58:15
look like a no I changed they all look like a dog running after like a ball
58:21
like they're all looking at the puck and like the puck moves over this side they're all like all right let's get the puck
58:28
that's exactly what it is they're not playing they're not playing right now but you know what I mean though if you watch if you watch
58:34
these players it's absolutely like Despicable because these guys they're just look no no no but that's the truth
58:40
you see these other teams they're they're finding gaps and they're playing they're playing the body and they're playing the person and these guys
58:46
they're trying to find these gaps they're trying to play this Zone that's not working they're getting clumped up you got three or four guys in one spot
58:52
and you got three or four guys in the opposing team that are open you got to play man these other teams who are playing unbelievable they're playing man
58:59
they're each of I pick a guy you know you lose a puck all right you have to pick a guy you pick a guy and you stick on him they're like everyone's just
59:05
watching the puck they all don't play a 200 foot game right now all right by the way welcome
59:11
back is what are you doing copyright M mine M my m m m
59:18
m i could have hardly when they see a puck mine mine
59:24
mine mine no but I remember I was watching I was watching of watching
59:29
everyone was doing that everyone it was the entire Squad was doing that and it was brutal and the Hurricanes they play
59:34
that man-on-man defense they play the boing hocke and they used to like suffocate that's that's what you got to
59:39
do though I mean that's what how that's what the usually they suffocate the Penguins they can't get anything but they actually did generate some offense
59:46
they just couldn't capitalize on their chances which has been the story The Last Seas Tuesday again so here's the
59:52
good news from yesterday I got to win on fortnite with 11 kills with that's our good news yeah we want to bring up video
59:59

1:02:17
Levi did give me a restaurant recommendation Co that's awesome um he said it's a bit of a drive but like it's
1:02:23

1:04:07

1:09:26
know you know what I I was nice and made the first few questions easy I don't even know and then you guys started
1:09:32
yapping so now you're getting the hard ones and I still got it right I don't even know I think yeah Jake you won oh
1:09:40
no way it is false G Wilson wore it for two games in 2019 Ryan has been knocked
1:09:46

1:10:23
only active player who currently was number 69 I don't know name the player were 69
1:10:31
wait yeah or so I should say assigned 69 assigned he has worn it for I think like
1:10:37
one game this year is is he part of the NHL yes okay like right now you're going to put Jesse or I was going to put
1:10:43
Jessie oh yes he is like he is assigned 69 from an NHL team I don't know I have
1:10:50
no idea I writing on this whiteboard with a pencil I have no idea is it like a meme player I mean is it history or
1:10:58
right now he's the only like no right now he's the only player who's assigned 69 I don't
1:11:05
know there's not even assigned what team did you play for Columbus I have no
1:11:13
idea what' you put I don't know I don't know Co cyer it
1:11:20
is absolutely not cold cyer that the only person I think of cold cyinder was number four and got and cheated on
1:11:27
tapate McCrae I got tapate McCrae on the playlist just so you know oh we know yay
1:11:32
we got something else we do we got we got some bangers last we got a different animal on that playlist the correct
1:11:38
answer was Gorden Dumas yeah like I would know that no one was going to know Al so who's the only two players in
1:11:43
recent I got okay not saying like I can't believe Nick I'm excited I'm so
1:11:49
excited to make a quiz next week the most gracious loser so far listen it's going to be fun qu he's got a
1:11:55
comfortable lead here I made this quiz at Mid well no I can just come back in the next you know what I mean I can just
1:12:01
come back wait I had a I did have a good I did have a good question I made this quiz at like midnight last night I could
1:12:07
tell all right um we can do pucks and deep real quick we've got a little time but before that uh it's time for
1:12:14
Andrew's Utah statement of the week oh yeah I forgot they kind of falling off the cliff
1:12:19
um do I want to ask what that is no oh yeah all
1:12:26
right since our last update Utah has gone three four and two and sits in
1:12:31
fourth place in the central with 15 points and a 6 five and three record they had a solid performance and win
1:12:37
against the Blues last night who now sit right behind them in fifth in the Central Utah recently added former
1:12:43
penguin and two time Stanley Cup champion oi ma to the team to make up for their injury depleted blue line so
1:12:49
far this season the new captain Clayton Keller leads the team in points with 13 Gunther leads the team in goals with
1:12:54
seven and sergachev is he botched the spelling is proving to be a great
1:13:00
addition to the team leading the blue line and scoring with 10 points their next game comes tomorrow night which
1:13:08
will be tonight when this video comes out no it's tomorrow night no this episode's coming
1:13:14
out coming out Saturday I forgot this so happy Saturday to those who are watching
1:13:19
on Saturday um their next game comes tonight against the Bottom Feeders of the league the Nashville Predators side
1:13:26
note I did not expect to say this that this season as always go Utah Barry TR
1:13:32
came out and said like if this team doesn't turn it around like I have no other choice but to like sell off some pieces I know homie was like we're
1:13:38
rebuilding possibly you didn't know just called Bailey shots homie I say that to like everyone I've never heard you say that
1:13:45
really never really maybe I mostly say it with
1:13:51
Morgan Morgan do you have like Texas and tell is that a factual statement like is
1:13:57
is she capping or is like it's just kind of like a buzz word for me no it's not how have I never said I've known you for
1:14:04
over a year now and you've never said homie once okay my bad for calling Barry trots homie my my mistake it just came
1:14:10
out calling Barry crots homy of all people he's not homie does that make you
1:14:16
feel better wow he's he's bald he's bald yeah he kind of looks like Humpty
1:14:23
Dumpty all right um we crushed him in the 16 17 playoffs yes what are you do
1:14:30
in 18 we don't talk about 2018 we don't talk about that year that year is just
1:14:36
erased from the calendar um I'm getting who sent I was in the KHL for a reason
1:14:42
okay was he the coach of the Islanders When J had that meltdown yes oh yes I
1:14:49
got to stop talking okay um that like I have to just say that melt down and we and just to
1:14:56
wrap it up just a quick little fun pucks and deep we have since we're going to Columbus next week for a trip um what's
1:15:04
what is your guys's favorite trip you've ever taken oh that's nice wait hockey related or no anything
1:15:11
anything anything uh I'm going go first yeah go yeah you go uh my trip to
1:15:18
Montana went to Yellowstone in Glacier National Park it's absolutely beautiful state and I had two weddings there so
1:15:25
it's like was partying and Hiking it was isn't Yellowstone in Wyoming no it's in
1:15:30
Montana it's in like it's like big enough that it goes in several States I think okay that's probably I think it's
1:15:36
like cuz it's so big I think it covers like it's that Mak sense okay I could be
1:15:41
wrong I'm almost no no no you're right cuz like Montana it's part of I think it's in I think part of it's in Montana
1:15:48
and part of it's in Wyoming I'm probably thinking of Y the Yus oh I think it is in spans across two
1:15:57
states I know ball no ball I know I know poke yeah that was that was probably my
1:16:04
I know that was a great vacation with the family awesome memory and we went white water rafting that was yeah
1:16:10
located in the north northwest corner of Wyoming and extending into Montana and Idaho I know park that's awesome you
1:16:16
know Park I know B know Park I know car I know Park you know car park no car
1:16:24
like NASCAR call call I was making a joke do you know car park homie you don't know that
1:16:31
homie oh I hate how I don't have editing power this week I'm going homie's going to be a word for the road you want to do
1:16:38
me a favor whenever I have to go to Bible study and when I actually if I am
1:16:44
still editing when I have to go to thing tonight church tonight editing's all your I got I'm
1:16:52
working tonight oh yeah the I'm not thank you
1:16:57
you can edit oh God no no that's no Ryan you want to edit I got I got WWE
1:17:04
he's not going to be in town Nick you are only allowed editing power Drew is not wa am I allowed I mean I guess I get
1:17:11
that's not but I guess for tonight only Nick only Nick no Drew um fine Nick what
1:17:18
was your favorite trip you've ever taken yeah yeah so without a doubt um our high
1:17:23
school decided it was a great idea idea to let a bunch of like take like a 100
1:17:31
high school students uh and ship them on a plane to
1:17:36
Universal and Disney for a week oh boy a week yeah and boy let me tell you some
1:17:44
of the stuff that happened that trip that was that was a fun trip I'm not going to lie um yeah I was you know got
1:17:51
my own hotel room we like took over some nice resort for hotel um did the school
1:17:58
faay for you yeah dude we had like kind of fundraiser for it but like wow like I
1:18:03
I did have to pay I think like 300 bucks or something but like not and also of we literally had to get to the school at
1:18:10
like 2: a.m. on New Year's Day so none of us got sleep our flight left at like
1:18:16
5: we busted from our school at like 2:30 to the airport that's not and then
1:18:22
our flight left at like 5:00 we landed Orlando at like 8:00 a.m. oh no and we went straight to Universal from the
1:18:30
airport that's how we were CED but man that was a fun fun trip I will I was
1:18:36
going to say for mine was Disney but I'm going to change it up because I actually had to sit through a 24 and a half hour
1:18:43
bus ride uh to Disney with my with my um
1:18:48
senior year class and we went to Magic Kingdom the day of so it was 24 bus I
1:18:55
went to Magic Kingdom they have fantastic time but U my answer uh was me my mom and my dad we uh drove up to
1:19:02
Toronto and went to the Hockey Hall of Fame and it was it went to the Hockey
1:19:07
Hall of Fame and we went to like we stayed there and um went to The Stranger
1:19:12
Things experience they had a stranger things experience up in Toronto and yeah it was really cool they had a lot of
1:19:17
actors and like you know a lot of effects happening so that was really cool but but I think my favorite part of that was it was about 20 minutes before
1:19:24
for closeth and you know the cup's in the old Cathedral and it's like there and it's like really there's a lot of
1:19:30
stain glass windows it's it's beautiful um I remember I walked up the steps and it was like 20 minutes before
1:19:36
close and there was not a single person in there no security no nothing no anything and I was like wow this is
1:19:42
really peaceful for the last 20 minutes before security came to lock things up really nice people by the way but I remember just walking up there there was
1:19:48
no line there was no worried so I was like I'm I mean I paid for in here I'm going to walk up here and I just like and I just looked at the cup and I was
1:19:54
just reading the names and I thought you say you just picked it up you stole the cup no but it was and then that's a
1:20:00
selfie right yeah that was the selfie I'll show it but um I also took another picture cuz they wouldn't let us during
1:20:06
it so sorry hocky Hall of Fame but they had a stool for the little kids I grabbed the stool cuz I wouldn't let you
1:20:13
cuz people would put stuff in the cup originally like in the bowl but the original wanderer's name is in the
1:20:18
inside of the cup with the wanders team how they beat canora in the first ever original um challenge Cup Final
1:20:25
and they um they wouldn't let you look in it they would never they're like you cannot look in that thing so no one was
1:20:30
in there so it was really cool I took the stool and I went and I peered over and I was reading the names and awesome
1:20:35
I remember um I got down and then security came in but it was good yeah it was just me standing on a stool and I was just reading the names on the inside
1:20:41
of the cup so it was really cool it was just it was very peaceful and it was just a good time see you behave better
1:20:46
than me cuz like if that happened to me I'm grabbing that thing and I'm I'm lifting it over my head and I'm
1:20:53
going like in I'm actually like like I'm actually like
1:20:59
no I I could St cup over your head is thing it's it's one of those things where it's it's such a beautiful place
1:21:05
it's very calm it seriously is and it's and it's and it's such an amazing like I
1:21:11
it's like an atmosphere it's like you're there you can't describe it unless have a sh you cannot describe it unless
1:21:16
you're there because you feel like so calm it's like everything just especially big hockey fans just you forget everything in the world and I
1:21:23
remember just standing I was like this is unbelievable I mean whenever I went to the Hall of Fame it was the summer of
1:21:29
16 right after the end one oh my goodness so they had like like kind of
1:21:34
like the new like penguin stuff there so cool dude awesome it was so
1:21:40
cool um for me cuz I kind of like classify trips and vacations separately
1:21:45
so like I won't say anything where I was gone for like a week um no offense no offense just me personally your yours
1:21:51
can count for you but just for me personally because like I've had really great vacations but I've also had really good short form trips okay and those are
1:21:58
some of the better ones too that is true yeah so like I also went to Toronto saw the Hockey Hall of Fame um the night
1:22:05
before that though the Leafs were in the playoffs and we went to Maple Leaf square and watched on the big screen and
1:22:10
the LEF won it was very actually won they won the game they didn't win the series but of course they didn't win the
1:22:16
series it's not Maple Leafs and it was the Bruins so of course it was cuz I never beat the Bruins um that is one
1:22:23
thing I do want to experience though like once is maple leaf Square isra I want to experience I want to I want to
1:22:28
be Maple Leaf Square have you been to Maple Leaf square that is an insane that's me by myself in the last 20
1:22:34
minutes I took the picture of the inside of the cup but another trip that's up there for me was my was my senior trip too um we
1:22:43
went to Cedar Point for like two days and love Cedar Point it was so much fun
1:22:48
even though like the group I was with half of us were like yeah we'll do all the roller coaster and then the other
1:22:55
half were like we don't really like roller coasters I'm like okay I'm doing everything bye wow um not that I left
1:23:00
them behind but like yeah cuz they still suck around with us cuz yeah but that
1:23:06
was just fun um the last day before we like left Ohio we went to Kalahari and we were just all so tired
1:23:13
and we were just cahari was like the probably the worst part of that trip we were just like we don't really want to do this we just want to go home it was
1:23:20
fine to like just sit in the Lazy River for a bit and relax but kalari in Ohio yeah but like the just being at Cedar
1:23:28
Point was like the best part you guys been to Wisconsin Dells no never been to Wisconsin really no do you know you know
1:23:36
what Wisconsin DS is Wisconsin it's just a bunch of water pars did you say where's Wisconsin I said who goes to
1:23:42
Wisconsin people who live in Illinois people who like the cheese the cheese heads people like the
1:23:48
Green Bay Packers go packo not Packers no get out no get out all right well
1:23:56
that's all we have for this week um that was a very success I really enjoyed today's episode great and I'm excited to
1:24:02
be the host of trivia during the trip that's going to be wait can we like stop at like a gas station and just do like a
1:24:09
quiz of like the back seat oh my God I was going to say what if we do like a hotel quiz I think Hotel quiz would be
1:24:14
like after the game like or depending on how the game goes I don't even know but we we'll win we'll do a hotel quiz but
1:24:20
