Three Takeaways From Detroit Red Wings Win Over Ottawa

Red Wings takeaways against Ottawa

The Detroit Red Wings picked up their fourth straight win today over the Ottawa Senators, beating them 5-2. This was a highly anticipated hockey game after the rivalry that was started last season, and today did not disappoint.

Best Power-Play in Hockey

Through five games to start the season, the power-play has been a complete 360 from last season and continues to get better each game as they lead the league in power-play with a 50.0% going 9/18 to start the season, and today they went 3/5 with goals from Shayne Gostisbehere, David Perron, and Dylan Larkin.

Secondary Scoring

Today, the Red Wings got some production from their bottom six forwards as Christian Fischer had a beautiful pass to Joe Veleno, who put the puck home to make it 2-1 Detroit. Then, in the third period, Veleno tallied another one on a beautiful feed from Daniel Sprong that he took to beat Joonas Korpisalo top shelf. It was Veleno’s first two-goal game of his career.

Husso Shines

The Red Wings were outshot by the Senators 38-23 but still managed to hold on, thanks to Ville Husso and the newly revamped defense he has in front of him. Husso continues to impress at the start of the season with today’s win; he has improved to 3-1-1 on the year and has stopped 109 of 121 shots to start the year. He stopped 35 of the 37 shots he saw today, helping lead the Red Wings to victory.

Next Up:

The Detroit Red Wings are back at it again tomorrow night when they begin a short homestand starting with a matchup against the Calgary Flames at 5:00 PM; the Flames are 2-2-1 to start the season and are 1-2-1 on the road.

  1. Husso has only played 4 of their 5 games so far, he is 3-1 not 3-1-1. Reimer got a shutout in the other game. Other than that, solid article
