Aron Kiviharju – Defenseman (HIFK, Liiga)
The Captain of Team Finland at this year’s world juniors, Aron Kiviharju is one of the most highly-touted young defensemen in Finland. Drafted 122nd overall by the Minnesota Wild in the 2024 NHL Draft, Kiviharju has been turning heads with his performances for HIFK Helsinki in Finland’s top professional league.
Despite dealing with a knee injury that limited his play last season, Kiviharju remains a dynamic puck-moving defenseman with elite vision and hockey IQ. He has the ability to quarterback the power play and transition the puck up the ice with ease. Kiviharju is not only a key player for Finland in this tournament but also a top prospect for the NHL, making him one to watch closely.
Konsta Helenius – Forward (Rochester Americans, AHL)
Drafted 14th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2024 NHL Draft and already signed, Konsta Helenius is a cornerstone of Finland’s roster. Described as a “well-rounded, detailed play-driver,” Helenius excels in all areas of the game. His high hockey IQ allows him to anticipate plays and outwork opponents in puck battles, often turning defensive situations into offensive opportunities.
Helenius is known for his relentless work ethic and defensive responsibility. He will anchor Finland’s top line, playing key roles on both the power play and penalty kill. Fans should expect him to be one of Finland’s most consistent and impactful players.
Emil Hemming – Forward (Barrie Colts, OHL)
Drafted 29th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2024 NHL Draft, Emil Hemming is a versatile forward with a dynamic offensive skill set. Known for his powerful shot, Hemming can score from a distance and execute a variety of shot types, making him a consistent scoring threat. He plays a physical game reminiscent of today’s power forwards, driving the net and battling through contact.
Hemming’s ability to link up with teammates on breakouts and his commitment to defensive play makes him a well-rounded contributor. With his mix of scoring ability and physicality, Hemming is expected to play a significant role in Finland’s top six.
Kasper Halttunen – Forward (London Knights, OHL)
Selected 36th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2023 NHL Draft, Kasper Halttunen is one of Finland’s most dangerous offensive weapons. Halttunen’s game revolves around his heavy shot, which is among the best in the tournament. His ability to score from a distance and unleash a lethal one-timer from the left half-wall makes him a cornerstone of Finland’s power play.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and playing a physical, power-forward style, the 19-year-old excels in using his size to battle through defenders and create space. As an OHL Champion with the London Knights and a medalist at both the U18 World Championship and the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, Halttunen brings winning experience to Finland’s lineup.
Petteri Rimpinen – Goaltender (Kiekko-Espoo, Liiga)
Finland’s path to success in the World Junior Championship will depend heavily on the play of their likely starting goaltender, Petteri Rimpinen. The 18-year-old has been a steady presence for Kiekko-Espoo in Finland’s Liiga, posting a 2.25 GAA and a .916 save percentage so far this season. His calm demeanour and sharp reflexes make him a reliable last line of defence.
Rimpinen’s ability to handle high-pressure situations will be critical, especially against high-powered offences like Canada and the USA. He has the skill set to steal games, making him a key player to watch.
Team Finland will start the tournament tonight against the host country, Team Canada. The game is being held at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, and the puck drop will be at 7:30 PM EST (2:30 AM in Helsinki on Dec. 27th).
