AHL: Alex Whelan Retires

There comes the time when a player has to make the decision to keep going, or to hang up the skates and move on from the game. This week, former AHL Right Winger Alex Whelan, announced his retirement from the game.

Whelan, is 27 years old, and hails from Ramsey, NJ. He is 6’0 and 212 pounds and comes equipped with a right shot.

Whelan has a lengthy history dating back to his junior career and high school playing days. Whelan played for Ramsey High School from 2011-2015. He played in a span of 110 games played while netting 145 goal along with 120 assists. In the 2013-2014 season, Whelan played 27 games for the 16U AAA for the New Jersey Hitmen. In those 27 games, he tallied 35 goals with 40 assists. He also played for the 18U AAA in four games. He notched one goal and three assists. Whelan played in one game for the New Jersey Hitmen- Empire and tallied one goal.

In the 2014-2015 season, Whelan played for the New Jersey Hitmen in the 18U AAA. He played in a total of 26 games and notched 14 goals with nine assists. Whelan moved on to his final season with the Hitmen in the 2015-2016 season with the Premier division. He played in 44 games and tallied 18 goals with 35 assists.

Whelan went into the NCAA for his college career and played for Quinnipiac University. In the 2019-2020 season, Whelan wore the “A” on his sweater. During his time at Quinnipiac, he played in 141 games played from the 2016-2019 seasons. He notched 48 goals with 30 assists. Whelan saw his professional dreams come to fruition when he signed with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL for the 2020-2021 season.

During his first full professional season, Whelan played in 10 games and tallied two goals with one assist. Whelan went back for his second year playing for the Wolf Pack in the 2021-2022 season. He played in 62 games total and tallied eight goals and eight assists. During the 2022-2023 season, Whelan saw movement in his professional career. He played in 23 games for Hartford Wolf Pack and notched two goals with three assists. Whelan then went to the ECHL and played in three games for the Jacksonville Icemen, notching two goals and three assists. Whelan received a call back up to the AHL with the Cleveland Monsters. He played in 19 games with the Monsters and netted one goal and four assists.

In the 2023-2024 season, Whelan played in the ECHL for the Atlanta Gladiators and in the AHL for the Cleveland Monsters. While with Atlanta, Whelan played in 23 games. He tallied 14 goals with nine assist. When Whelan went back to the Cleveland Monsters, He played in a total of 36 games and notched seven goals with seven assists in the regular season. Whelan assisted the Monsters on their post-season run and played in 14 games in the post-season. He tallied five goals with four assists.
