AHL: Cal O’Reilly to Play in 1,000th AHL Game

On Thursday Milwaukee Admirals forward Cal O’Reilly will play his 1,000th career AHL game. The 38-year-old is just the ninth player in AHL history to accomplish that feat. The Admirals will face the Chicago Wolves with puck drop set for 11:00 AM CST.

Cal O’Reilly

The Nashville Predators drafted O’Reilly 150th overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft out of the OHL. O’Reilly debuted in the AHL during the 2005-06 season with the Admirals. In two games that season he failed to record a point. The following season in 78 games he had 65 points on 18 goals and 47 assists. In 2007-08 in 80 games he had 79 points on 16 goals and 63 assists. He made his NHL debut in 2008-09 playing in 11 games with the Predators. He recorded five points on three goals and two assists. That same season he played in 67 games with Milwaukee recording 69 points on 13 goals and 56 assists.

2010’s

He spent the entire 2010-11 with Nashville playing in 38 games recording 18 points on six goals and 12 assists. In the 2011-12 season, he spent time on five teams between the NHL and the AHL. In the AHL he played for the Portland Pirates and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He played in a combined 26 games recording 12 on one goal and 11 assists. He spent the 2012-13 season in the KHL. 2013-14 he played in the KHL, VHL, and AHL. In the AHL he played with the Utica Comets. He would appear in 76 games recording 61 points on ten goals and 51 assists. 

He spent the 2015-16 season playing in the NHL and AHL. In the NHL he played with the Buffalo Sabres. In the AHL he played with their affiliate the Rochester Americans playing in 47 games recording 29 points on six goals and 23 assists. The next season also played with Buffalo and Rochester. He also was loaned to the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. O’Reilly combined to play in 62 games in the AHL. He recorded 50 points on nine goals and 41 assists. 

In 2017-18 he was off to a new franchise as he played with the Minnesota Wild and their AHL affiliate the Iowa Wild. In 75 games with Iowa, he recorded 64 points on 15 goals and 49 assists. He would spend all of 2018-19 in Iowa playing in 67 games recording 67 points on 16 goals and 51 assists. O’Reilly then spent four seasons with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. In 218 games over those four seasons, he recorded 123 points on 36 goals and 87 assists.

Recent Success and Accolades

Last season he returned to Milwaukee where it all began playing in 69 games recording 30 points on ten goals and 20 assists. He became the Admirals’ all-time leading scorer on February 24, 2024. This season in 45 games with the Admirals he has 30 points on six goals and 24 assists. In 999 career AHL games, he has 764 points on 172 goals and 592 assists. He is a five-time AHL All-Star and has won the Fred T. Hunt Memorial Award for sportsmanship.
