AHL: Colten Ellis Named Player of the Week (March 3rd-9th)

The Springfield Thunderbird last week went 3-1-0-0. They sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Division and hold the second-to-last playoff spot in the division. Springfield played three of their four games on the road. They beat the Charlotte Checkers on Tuesday 3-0 before dropping Wednesday’s game 5-2. They bounced back Saturday in the lone home game with a 2-1 win over the Providence Bruins. Then they wrapped up the week with a 5-2 win on Sunday over the Bridgeport Islanders.

Due to the Thunderbirds’ week, the AHL Player of the Week was named to goalie Colten Ellis. Ellis made three appearances going 2-0-0. He had a 0.72 goals-against average, a .979 save percentage, and a shutout in Tuesday’s 3-0 win. He allowed only two goals on 97 shots. It was a big week for Ellis who signed a two-year contract extension with the St. Louis Blues. Ellis this season in 32 games is 20-7-3 with a 2.36 goals-against average, a .928 save percentage, and two shutouts.

The St. Louis Blues drafted Ellis with the 93rd overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. He spent 2019-20 with Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL. In 29 games he went 18-7-3 with a .904 save percentage, a 2.41 goals-against average, and two shutouts. During 2020-21 he played with the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL, he made 24 starts going 23-1-0 with a 1.78 goals-against average, a .926 save percentage, and seven shutouts. In the playoffs that season he played in eight games going 5-3-0 with a 3.11 goals-against average, a .863 save percentage, and a shutout. In 2021-22 he joined the Worcester Railers of the ECHL playing in 34 games going 15-13-5 with a 3.21 goals-against average, a .905 save percentage, and a shutout.

He also played with the Thunderbirds going 1-3-3 with a 3.93 goals-against average, and a .880 save percentage. In 2022-23 he played only in the ECHL with the Tulsa Oilers, in 27 games he went 12-9-5 with a .888 save percentage and a 3.46 goals-against average. Last season, he spent time in the ECHL and with the Thunderbirds. In the ECHL he played in 21 games going 12-5-1 with a 2.45 goals-against average, a .923 save percentage, and a shutout. In Springfield, in 16 games he went 7-9-0 with a .924 save percentage and a 2.89 goals-against average.
