AHL: Game Recap: Hershey Bears vs Lehigh Valley Phantoms | 12/30/23

Allentown, PA- The Hershey Bears will be heading off into 2024 on a good note with an eight-game winning streak. The goalie match-up of the game was Clay Stevenson in net for the Bears and Cal Peterson in net for the Phantoms. Stevenson has a 1.70 goals allowed average while Peterson has a 3.26 goals allowed average. With the Bears and Phantoms’ fifth match-up of the season Stevenson successfully shut out the Lehigh Valley Phantoms by saving all 37 shots he faced. Stevenson has shut out the Phantoms three times this season with tonight’s shutout win. With his fifth shutout of the season, Stevenson is now tied for the Bears rookie shutout record. The game stayed scoreless until 3:44 in the second period when Lucas Johansen shot from the center ice and scored with Logan Day assisting him on the goal. Cal Petersen completely lost the puck that Johansen shot, and it rainbowed up and under him letting Johansen’s goal in.

This was Johansen’s second goal of the season. The Bears wouldn’t score again until the third period, where Matt Strome would score his first of the season against his former team at 3:10 with Vincent Iorio and Lucas Johansen assisting him. Strome would later score again at 7:58 with Bogdan Trineyev and Riley Sutter assisting his goal. Jake Massie would also end up scoring for the first time this season at 11:26 on a breakaway with no assists. The Bears only took up four penalties all game, so it was a very clean game. They only served eight penalty minutes, and the Phantoms only served six penalty minutes and 3 penalties all game long. Despite their rivalry, they played a great game of hockey.
