The Manitoba Moose picked up their eighth win of the season with a 3-2 win over the Calgary Wranglers on Sunday, January 5th.

Forwards Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Parker Ford and Nikita Chibrikov were the goalscorers in the Moose’s victory over Calgary. Moose goaltender Thomas Milic stopped 23 of 25 shots that he faced in the win.

Things got started on a high note for the Moose, Axel Jonsson-Fjallby got a good shot on goal which hit the post and Chaz Lucius got on a breakaway just seconds later.

Dmitry Kuzmin took a double minor for high sticking, a penalty that could have swamped the Moose’s chances of emerging victorious, but the Moose remained focused.

Mason Shaw broke loose for a shorthanded breakaway, which Wranglers netminder Devin Cooley turned aside. The puck shot to the neutral zone, and so did the Wranglers’ defenders, but Parker Ford found himself in the right place at the right time and got the puck on his stick for a second shorthanded breakaway, which he buried top shelf for the Moose’s first lead of the game.

Manitoba and Calgary went back and forth for the remainder of the period, but nothing came about as both teams remained perfect on the penalty kill and had a hard time scoring at even strength.

Calgary didn’t waste any time in the second period, including a strong push to begin the period where Lucas Ciona picked up a rebound and tied the game up for the Wranglers.

Manitoba didn’t waste time getting back on the scoresheet as Kevin Conley recorded his third goal of the season. Conley fired the puck low on net and it barely trickled through Devin Cooley’s five hole to put the Moose up 2-1.

The period ended with Manitoba remaining on the penalty kill for another 1:02 and they continued their perfect penalty killing throughout the remainder of the game.

Calgary spoiled the Moose’s part as Sam Morton’s seventh goal of the season was a beautiful backhand top-shelf goal to tie the game at 2-2. However, Manitoba wouldn’t stop pushing and it paid off.

Chaz Lucius fired up the right wing and after a couple of nifty moves, he passed the puck to Brad Lambert who quickly got it to Nikita Chibrikov to score the game-winning goal. This tic-tac-toe sequence was enough to put the Moose back in the win column for the 2024-25 season.

Manitoba is back in action against the Milwaukee Admirals on Wednesday, January 8th for a 7:00 pm CST puck drop. The Moose’s next home game is on January 17th when they welcome the Toronto Marlies for a weekend set.
