
The Providence Bruins and Springfield Thunderbirds squared off for a winner-takes-all game three today at Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, RI. Springfield took game one 2-1 on Wednesday night to force Providence into a must-win situation on Friday. Friday’s game got chaotic with it being a 0-0 game heading into overtime, where Providence got a goal from Vinni Lettieri to force today’s game. Providence secured the victory today to advance to the second round of the AHL Calder Cup playoffs.

Providence Bruins vs. Springfield Thunderbirds
Springfield got on the board first when Corey Schueneman scored his first of the playoffs. That was the lone goal of the first period. That would end up being the long goal for Springfield, as it was all Providence the rest of the way. In the second period, Providence tied it when Matthew Poitras scored just over 2.5 minutes in the middle frame. It was a power-play goal for Poitras.
In the third, Providence dominated as Ian Mitchell, Riley Tufte, and Poitras all scored goals. Tufte scored two goals in the final frame, and Mitchell and Poitras each added power-play goals. Michael DiPietro finished stopping 15 of the 16 shots he faced. He wrapped up the series with a .945 save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against average. On the other side for Springfield, Colten Ellis stopped 34 of the 39 shots he faced. He finishes with a 2.32 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage.

The Providence Bruins will now move on to face the Charlotte Checkers with game one set for Friday at Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, RI. Providence finished 1-2-1-0 against the Checkers, averaging 2.8 goals per game while allowing 3.5 goals per game.
