AHL Game Recap: Providence Suffers Shootout Loss to Rochester

The Providence Bruins suffered a 4-3 shootout loss to the Rochester Americans last night. They blew two leads in the game, with Rochester tying it with under three minutes left in the game. Despite the loss, they managed to come away with a point. They now hold third place in the Atlantic Division, trailing first-place Hershey by five points. The Charlotte Checkers, who are behind the Bruins by one point, have played three fewer games.

Providence vs. Rochester Recap

First Period

The Bruins jumped out to a 1-0 lead just under four minutes in when Jeffrey Viel scored his ninth of the season. Tyler Pitlick and Jake Gaudet both collected assists on the goals. Later in the first Viel scored again to make it 2-0 Providence. The score would remain 2-0 after the first 20. 

Second Period

In the second period, the Americans got on the board with an Erik Brannstrom goal. His sixth of the season and his third goal in two games since joining Rochester. Noah Ostlund and Mason Jobst each added assists on Brannstrom’s goal. 

Third Period

The third was active. Rochester tied the game at 2-2 just over one minute in when Jobst scored his 15th of the season. Jack Rathbone and Ryan Johnson collected assists. Providence took the lead back with just over six minutes left when Oliver Wahlstrom scored a power-play goal. Georgii Merkulov and Matthew Poitras added assists. Just over two minutes left and Rochester tied it again with a goal from Isak Rosen his 27th of the season which is third in the league. Brannstrom and Lukas Rousek added assists. The game would remain tied at the end of regulation. 

Extra Time

The overtime period saw Rochester outshoot Providence 4-3 despite the Bruins having a two-minute man advantage just 27 seconds in. The game would go to a shootout where Wahlstrom, Merkulov, and Pitlick failed to score for Providence. The Americans’ lone goal in the shootout came from Jack Rathbone in the second round to give Rochester the extra point. 

Providence vs. Rochester Goalies 

Brandon Bussi got the start in goal for Providence. He stopped 40 of the 43 shots he faced. Bussi is 11-11-1 on the season with a 2.86 goals-against average, a .902 save percentage, and four shutouts. Devon Levi got the start for Rochester. He stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced. Levi with the win improved to 20-9-3 with a 2.29 goals-against average, a .915 save percentage, and five shutouts. 

Next Up

The Providence Bruins will next face the Springfield Thunderbirds on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM EST at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA. The Bruins are 4-5-0-1 against the Thunderbirds this season. They’ve averaged 2.8 goals per game against Springfield while allowing 2.9 goals per game. Rochester’s next game is next Friday against the Checkers at 7:05 PM EST at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY. Rochester is 1-2-0-0 against Charlotte this season, they won 3-0 on December 7th and lost 6-0 on December 6th and 4-3 on Wednesday.
