AHL: Springfield Thunderbirds Sign Three-Time Kelly Cup Champion Goalie

The Springfield Thunderbirds today signed goalie Cam Johnson to an AHL deal for the 2025-26 season. Johnson last season played in 47 games for the Florida Everblades of the ECHL. He went 37-6-4 with a 1.92 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage, and five shutouts. In 15 Kelly Cup Playoff games, he went 10-5-0 with a 1.75 goals-against average, a .922 save percentage, and two shutouts.

Early Career

Johnson spent four seasons at the University of North Dakota. In his first season, he appeared in just two games. In his second season, he took over the net, playing in 34 games, going 24-4-2. He posted a 1.66 goals-against average, a .935 save percentage, and five shutouts. Johnson, in 2016-17, played in 37 games, going 20-13-3. He posted a 2.39 goals-against average, a .903 save percentage, and four shutouts. In his final season, he appeared in 29 games, going 12-9-7. Posting a 2.14 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage, and three shutouts. He then joined the Binghamton Devils for three games that same season, going 0-1-2. He posted a 3.90 goals-against average and a .876 save percentage.

Cam Johnson in 2018-19 split time between Binghamton and the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL. In Binghamton, he went 11-15-3 with a 3.79 goals-against average, a .872 save percentage, and a shutout. In ten games with Adirondack, he went 4-5-1 with a 2.54 goals-against average, a .915 save percentage, and a shutout. The next season, he played in 21 games for the Florida Everblades, going 13-5-1. He posted a 2.32 goals-against average, a .925 save percentage, and two shutouts. In 2020-21, he played in just seven games for the Everblades, going 6-1-0. He went on to post a 1.77 goals-against average, a .941 save percentage, and two shutouts.

Kelly Cup Championship Seasons

Johnson in 2021-22 split time between the AHL and the ECHL. In 20 games with the Cleveland Monsters, he went 6-9-4 with a 3.27 goals-against average and a .882 save percentage. He played in 15 games in the ECHL. He went 10-3-2 with a 2.07 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage, and a shutout. In 18 Kelly Cup Playoff games, he went 15-3-0 with a 1.90 goals-against average, a .931 save percentage, and four shutouts. That was the Florida Everblades first of three straight Kelly Cups.

The following season, he played in one game for the Charlotte Checkers, picking up a win, stopping 20 of the 23 shots he faced. In 55 games for the Everblades, he went 26-20-4 with a 2.85 goals-against average, a .907 save percentage, and two shutouts. In 22 Kelly Cup Playoff games en route to winning it all, he went 16-6-0 with a 2.10 goals-against average, a .922 save percentage, and four shutouts. Johnson, in 2023-24, played in 49 games for the Everblades, going 27-15-4 with a 2.21 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage, and four shutouts. In 23 playoff games, he went 16-7-0 with a 1.88 goals-against average, a .932 save percentage, and three shutouts.
