AHL Weekend Recap: Providence Bruins Sweep the Weekend

The Providence Bruins picked up their second and third straight wins over the weekend. They started it off with a dominating 10-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Bruins concluded it with a 3-1 win over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday. They moved into third with the two wins and sit six points back of the Hershey Bears and one point behind the Penguins.

Friday: Providence Bruins vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 

The Bruins got the scoring started just over eight minutes in as Jake Gaudet scored his second. Less than six minutes later Joey Abate scored to make it 2-0 Providence. With just 40 seconds left in the opening period, Gaudet scored his second of the game to make it 3-0 Providence. Providence added to their lead not even a minute into the period. Jeffrey Viel got into the scoring adding his 11th of the season. Just under 5.5 minutes into the middle frame the Penguins got a goal back as Sam Poulin scored an unassisted goal. After the Poulin goal, it was all Bruins in the second as Georgii Merkulov, Ty Gallagher, and Frederic Brunet all scored to make it 7-1 Providence. 

Just over three minutes into the third period Viel added his second goal of the game and his fourth point. Matthew Poitras would score his tenth of the season just over seven minutes into the third making it 9-1 Bruins. The Penguins got another one back as Boris Katchouk scored his 20th of the season. With just over a minute left in the game Brett Harrison scored his fourth of the season. Merkulov and Poitras added assists to make it 10-2. That would be the final as Brandon Bussi stopped 42 of the 44 shots he faced. Both Penguins goalies saw action in this one. Sergei Murashov stopped 12 of the 15 shots he faced while Filip Larsson stopped 18 of the 25 shots he faced. 

Saturday: Providence Bruins vs. Lehigh Valley Phantoms 

On Saturday Providence jumped out to another 1-0 lead in the first period. Matthew Poitras found the back of the net just over 11 minutes in. It was Poitras’ 11th of the season. Neither team scored in the middle period making it 1-0 Providence entering the third. Brett Harrison would extend Providence’s lead to 2-0 with his fifth of the season. With just over three minutes left, Poitras extended the Bruins lead to 3-0. The Phantoms got on the board with under two minutes left as Alexis Gendron scored but it wasn’t enough and the Bruins win again. Michael DiPietro got the start and stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced while Aleksei Kolosov stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced. 

Next Week:

Providence has a busy week. On Tuesday and Wednesday they will face the Charlotte Checkers both games will be at Bojangles Arena with puck drop at 7:00 PM EST. Providence leads Charlotte by one point. On Saturday they return home to face the Hartford Wolf Pack with puck drop set for 7:05 PM EST. On Sunday Springfield is in town with puck drop set for 3:05 PM EST. Tuesday will be the first meeting between Providence and Charlotte this season. Providence is 5-3-0-0 against Hartford this season averaging 3.5 goals per game while allowing 2.6 goals per game. Providence is 5-5-0-1 against Springfield this season averaging 2.9 goals per game while allowing 2.7 goals per game.
