Alex Formenton, a former player for the Ottawa Senators and Canada’s World Junior Hockey Team, surrendered himself to London, Ontario Police, on Sunday, January 28th, 2024. This was in connection to the alleged sexual assault of a woman after a fundraising gala in 2018.
Formenton is one of five players that are from Canada’s 2018 World Juniors Hockey team in connection to the allegations. Five players have been asked to surrender to police to face sexual assault charges. The woman makes the allegation that this event happened in a hotel room following the gala event in June 2018.
Formenton’s lawyer, Daniel Brown, released the following statement: “Alex will vigorously defend his innocence and asks that people not rush to judgment without hearing all of the evidence.” Brown did not get into any specifics of Forementon’s charges at this time.
Formenton took a leave of absence from his Swiss hockey team, HC Ambrì-Piotta, last week. Formenton last played for the Senators in the 2021-2022 season.
London, Ontario Police are scheduled to speak to the public about the charges in a press conference on February 5th, 2024.
