An Update on Sean Monahan’s Wrist Injury

Earlier today, we received an update on the severity of Sean Monahan’s wrist injury. It has been confirmed that he has a sprained right wrist with no fractures, which is positive news for the Blue Jackets going forward. The top line Centerman sustained the upper-body injury during Tuesday’s 4-3 shootout victory over Pittsburgh. Once the swelling subsides, further tests will determine the severity of the injury (grades 1, 2, or 3) and provide a recovery timeline. Currently, Monahan is expected to miss 7 to 10 days, though his absence will likely extend beyond that.

So far this season, he has recorded 14 goals and 27 assists, totaling 41 points along with 14 penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating in 41 games with the Blue Jackets in 2024-25. He ranks second on the team in plus/minus rating and third in goals, assists, and points.

In light of Monahan’s injury, Lucas Del Bel Belluz and Owen Sillinger were called up to the team ahead of Thursday’s game, which they won 6-2 against Seattle. This game marked Owen Sillinger’s NHL debut at the age of 27, making him the eighth-oldest player in team history to make his first appearance. His journey to the NHL was notably different from that of his brother, Cole, who entered the league at 18. However, Owen never doubted his ability to reach this level, and his persistence as a long-time AHL player has finally paid off.

“I have a big belief in myself as a player and most importantly as a person. I knew if I did the right things every day, eventually, I’d get my opportunity. You never know what’s going to happen, and mine actually ended up happening to be in the whirlwind of situations that had to take place to get me here, but I’m here. I made the most of it. We got a great team win and I had a positive impact, so I’m very proud.”

The Blue Jackets (19-17-6) will now head to St. Louis to take on the Blues for a Saturday evening game, with a 7:00 PM EST puck drop.
