Arizona Coyotes Select Daniil But at 12th Overall

The Arizona Coyotes select the 6’5” mammoth and skilled winger from Russia-actually the same team as their first selection Dimitri Simashev

Reasons for Optimism

The massive winger has plenty of skill and should be able to put that together, uses size well, not just a straight-line player, and is able to set up his teammates well when needed. Coyotes have an area scout dedicated to Russia, and it’s (seemingly) paid off with Artyom Duda recently. Plays on the same team as Coyotes’ 6th overall pick lessening contract concerns.

Reasons for Caution

Under contract for two seasons, the KHL doesn’t prioritize development, especially of players headed to NA. Will the Coyotes regret not taking a center in this center-rich draft?

The Coyotes take another high-risk/high-reward type with this selection. GM Bill Armstrong said prior to the draft, they were taking risks, and they certainly did. But if they pay off, they will help the rebuild in a major way.
