After the Edmonton Oilers loaned forward Dylan Holloway to the Bakersfield Condors, they made a deal with the Arizona Coyotes for right-handed defenseman Troy Stecher. Edmonton also gets a 2024 7th round pick and Arizona gets a 2027 4th round pick. There is no salary retention in this deal, the Oilers get all of Stecher’s $1.1M cap hit. This leaves them now with $1M of cap space for the Trade Deadline tomorrow.

The 29-year-old has 5 points through 47 games this season. He’s also made 52 hits and blocked 67 shots. GM Ken Holland stated after the Henrique/Carrick trade that he was interested in acquiring a depth defenseman. Well, here he is. He played some solid seasons in Vancouver from 2017-2020, but I admittedly haven’t watched him play a lot after that. All I know is he had a lower-body injury about a month and a half ago and that would’ve kept him from suiting up in Arizona’s first meeting against the Oilers. I honestly just don’t know enough to fully critique his game yet. But a few analytics accounts on twitter have a favorable view of him. So I’m sure my perspective will change when I am finally able to see him play regularly. He’s not the same 20+ point player that he once was, but the defensive aspects of his game are still strong on all of the stats sheets.
Do you like this trade? Do you not? Let me know.
