Joey Daccord was born on August 19, 1996, in North Andover, Massachusetts. He is a professional goalie who catches left-handed. He has played in the NCAA, ECHL, AHL, and NHL, giving the 27-year-old a lot of experience between different level leagues. He was drafted into the NHL in 2015 in round seven as the 199th overall pick by the Ottawa Senators.
Daccord played three seasons in the NCAA for Arizona State University. Starting in the 2016-17 season and going through the 2018-19 season, he played 82 total games. His overall goals-against average was 3.07; his average save percentage was 0.909; he had eight shutouts, with seven being in his last season and a win-loss-tie record of 32-40-7. The time he spent playing in college was just a learning experience that would allow him to develop his skills even more to help him get to where he is today.
Daccord’s first-ever NHL game was in the 2018-19 season with the Ottawa Senators. In that game, he allowed five goals, and his save percentage was 0.875. While the team unfortunately lost the game, it was a great experience for Daccord to have as it gave him a taste of the highest level.
Part of his 2019-20 season was spent with the Brampton Beast, an ex-ECHL team that left the league in 2021, being the first team that didn’t survive COVID-19. Playing in only 12 games, Daccord made his presence known through his save percentage of 0.901 and his 2.85 goals against average. He also had one shutout and a record of 7-5-0.
The rest of the 2019-20 season and all of 2020-21 were spent in the AHL with the Belleville Senators. The already-talented Joey Daccord was able to better his skills in the 26 games played for Belleville. There, his average save percentage was 0.891; he got one shutout and had a record of 15-8-3. The majority of the next season for Daccord was spent still in the AHL but with the Charlotte Checkers.
Spending the 2021-22 season with the Charlotte Checkers, Joey Daccord was really starting to show his adjustment to the AHL’s level of difficulty, as well as improvements he had made in his skill sets on the ice. In 34 games played for the North Carolina team, Daccord maintained a save percentage of 0.925, had 2.28 goals against average, and a record of 19-11-2. He went to the Calder Cup Playoffs, playing in seven games, having a 3.15 goals against average, a save percentage of 0.879, one shut out, and a record of 3-4-0. His time spent in Charlotte not only was an amazing chance to show his incredible improvements but to also prepare him for last season, which he spent mostly with the Coachella Valley Firebirds as he helped them get very close to winning the Calder Cup.
Playing 38 games with Coachella last season, Daccord achieved a save percentage of 0.918, had a 2.38 goals against average, three shutouts, and 28 wins along with eight losses. In the Calder Cup Playoffs, Daccord performed exquisitely well as he got three shutouts, kept a 0.926 save percentage, and had 15 wins and 11 losses in 26 games. His performance and resilience did not go without notice as he helped bring the team really close to taking the Cup.
In between Daccord’s time with the Checkers and the Firebirds were some games played for the Seattle Kraken. He played 10 Seattle games, achieving a save percentage of 0.875 and a WLT of 2-5-1. Playing on the highest level with one of the “underdog” teams of the season was a huge test for the 27-year-old goalie, and he powered through with incredible resilience.
So far this season, Daccord has played in three of the Kraken’s games, saving 89% of shots he has faced, and had a 2.85 goals against average. Two of those games were wins, and one resulted in a tie for the goalie. We will continue to see where this season will take him as time progresses, but he has definitely had a great start so far.
