Boston Bruins captain and longtime forward Patrice Bergeron has captured his sixth Selke Trophy and his second consecutive trophy. Bergeron’s sixth Selke Trophy win is a league record.
Bergeron, who posted numbers that don’t align with the typical narrative for aging NHL players, deserves this Selke Trophy win. Bergeron scored 27 goals and 31 assists for 58 points in 78 games; he also captained the Bruins to setting NHL records with their historic 65 wins and 135-point season.
While the career of Patrice Bergeron remains uncertain, it is no question that he deserves a spot in the Hockey Hall Of Fame when he retires. Bergeron set new standards for forwards who excel in defensive aspects and will be a model player that coaches use for their forwards looking to excel defensively.
New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner were finalists for the Selke Trophy this year. The Selke Trophy is given to the forward voted for how they excel in the defensive areas of the game. This award is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.
