Mackenzie Blackwood Signs With San Jose Sharks

Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood has signed a two-year contract worth $2.35 million annually after acquiring his restricted free-agent rights via trade. San Jose wouldn’t match Blackwood’s qualifying offer, making the goaltender an unrestricted free agent.

26-year-old Blackwood would then negotiate a two-year contract with San Jose instead of hitting the UFA market. The 42nd overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft spent five seasons with the New Jersey Devils. Blackwood’s play would decline, and New Jersey would make a tough decision in their goaltending tandem. San Jose traded a sixth-round pick for Blackwood’s signing rights and would get a deal done.

In Blackwood’s 2022-23 campaign, he would play 22 games and post 3.20 goals against average and a 0.893 save percentage. Blackwood will look to bounce back in San Jose. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent when his contract expires at the end of the 2024-25 season.
