Today, the Boston Bruins announced they had acquired the rights to 24-year-old defenseman Victor Soderstrom from the Chicago Blackhawks. Boston sent a 2025 seventh-round pick (#197 overall) and prospect Ryan Mast to the Blackhawks in exchange for Soderstrom’s rights. Soderstrom is currently not under an NHL contract while playing in the SHL last season.
Victor Soderstrom was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the first round of the 2019 Draft, 11th overall. Between 2020 and 2024, Soderstrom only skated in 53 NHL Games for the Coyotes and 170 AHL games with the Tucson Roadrunners.
Soderstrom was traded from the Utah organization to Chicago in March of 2025 as part of the Shea Weber cap dump. Soderstrom didn’t play any games with the Chicago organization and spent the 24-25 season with Brynas IF in the SHL, tallying nine goals, 28 assists, and a +28 rating.
While the Boston Bruins missed the playoffs this season, they’re hopeful to refresh the roster with young talent for a playoff push under new head coach Marco Sturm in the 2025-26 season. After trading Brandon Carlo to the Maple Leafs at the trade deadline, Boston is taking a cheap flier on Soderstrom who could return to the NHL or AHL if the Bruins can sign him to a contract this offseason.
One would think, if Don Sweeney made this trade, he may have some knowledge on whether or not Soderstrom would be willing to sign with Boston.
