The Boston Bruins claimed forward Oliver Wahlstrom off waivers from the New York Islanders. Boston has struggled to score goals this season, and the 24-year-old native of Yarmouth, Maine, could help the Bruins in that area.
Wahlstrom has had a down year for the Islanders with only four points (2g, 2a) in 27 games this season while being a -6. In his career, Wahlstrom has 36 goals and 35 assists for 71 points in 11:40 average time on ice in 220 games. The winger’s best season came in the 2021-22 season, with 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points in 73 games. The 6-foot-2, 200lbs. forward was the 11th pick in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft. Wahlstrom is known for his highlight reel lacrosse goal as a 9-year-old in the Boston Bruins’ Mini One-on-One shootout.
Oliver Wahlstrom’s Contract
Wahlstrom has a $1 million cap hit this season and is an RFA at the end of the year. This risk is worth taking for the Bruins to get a first-round talent with some offensive upside. If it doesn’t work out, Boston can just let him walk at the end of the year. It’s a win-win for both parties as Boston hopes to gain a young scoring forward, and Wahlstrom will get an opportunity to resurrect his career.
