Morgan Geekie had a breakout season as the Boston Bruins floundered, blew up the roster, and missed the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons. The 26-year-old forward registered career highs in goals with 33, assists with 24, and points with 57 in 77 regular season games. The Bruins are now trying to find a way to sign the restricted free agent to a fair deal for both parties.

While speaking to reporters recently, Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney was asked for an update on negotiations between the two sides, and it seems there is progress still to be made.
“There’s been constant communication. Are we on the doorstep? I don’t think so, but things can change within one phone call,” Sweeney said. “Again, you get in around this time frame, and sometimes you’re tracking on a deal, and you get it done right away, and other times you get sort of pushed to the back burner as to do what everybody else is maybe focused on. I’m not concerned about it.”
The Bruins are in the midst of a retool, and the team has seen a substantial dip in offensive production. The line of Geekie, Elias Lindholm, and David Pastrnak was the one bright spot in an otherwise lost season. Now it is up to Boston to try and extend their goal-scoring winger to a multi-year contract. With over $23 million in salary cap space, the club has the means to get it done. As the free agency period of July 1 approaches, the two sides are still a ways apart. Starting on that day, teams can sign Geekie to an offer sheet that Boston can match, but it would benefit Boston to avoid that altogether.
