Boston Bruins Making a Decision on Trent Frederic

The Boston Bruins have had an up-and-down season. With subpar goaltending from Jeremy Swayman, anemic offense at times, and a coach firing. And the Bruins are only 30 games into the season. One decision that must be made before the trade deadline involves forward Trent Frederic. Frederic has the skill set to be a Bruins fan favorite but has been a disappointment this season. He is in the final year of his contract, worth $2.3 million per campaign.

With reports that the Bruins might be forecasting difficulty agreeing with the first-round pick in 2016, teams have contacted the club regarding a possible trade. According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Boston’s current indecision on Frederic might cause a need for a trade.

Benders: Trent Frederic on the Trade Block?
Benders: Jeremy Swayman has been BAD, why?

“Whatever the Bruins’ intentions are here,” Friedman said. “They are getting a lot of calls about him. He’s the kind of player playoff teams are going to want. He’s a good teammate, he’s competitive… he’s a very popular teammate and willing combatant.”

Frederic had a career year during the 2023-24 season with 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points, all career highs. But this season, it has been more of a struggle for the St. Louis native, who has registered just five goals, six assists, and a minus-13 rating. Frederic has two two-goal games on the season, scoring in just three games.

Speaking of St. Louis, Friedman mentions the Blues as a possible trade partner for Frederic and the Bruins. Frederic is open to playing in his hometown, and the Blues have been doing everything possible to improve their team.

“There’s a lot of people wondering if that’s what’s in his future,” Friedman said. “There’s a lot of time between now and then, we’ll see where this goes.”

Aside from the Blues, several teams are reportedly interested in the rugged winger, which could increase his trade value. Typically, the Bruins stick with their core members. But after losing Jake DeBrusk in free agency this past offseason, the team might want to get some assets if Frederic is out of their price range.
