The Boston Bruins announced on Thursday that the team has placed forward Tyler Johnson on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract. Johnson was signed to a one-year, $775,000 deal with the team in early November. The 34-year-old winger joined the Bruins on a professional tryout agreement in August, scoring a goal and two points in four preseason games.
Johnson had two assists in nine games with the Bruins this season. The Bruins claimed former New York Islanders forward Oliver Wahlstrom on Saturday. The Portland, Maine native will make his Bruins’ debut on Thursday, which helped facilitate the move with Johnson.
Tyler Johnson played last season with the Chicago Blackhawks, recording 17 goals and 31 points in 67 games while playing out the last of a seven-year, $35 million deal.
The undrafted free agent won two Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning and has scored 193 goals with 240 assists in 747 regular season games in his NHL career. The Spokane, Washington native has 32 goals and 33 assists in 116 playoff games and led the 2015 NHL postseason with 13 goals and 23 points.
