Former Providence Bruins‘ defenseman Alec Regula may get an NHL opportunity this season after all. The Edmonton Oilers announced that the team has claimed Regula off waivers from Boston, opening the door for him to play his first NHL action in well over a year very shortly. Edmonton had a pair of open roster spots, so no corresponding move is necessary. For now, he’ll slot in as the eighth defenseman on Edmonton’s roster and will compete for depth minutes with Ty Emberson, Travis Dermott, and Troy Stecher.
The Bruins activated the 24-year-old Regula from season-opening injured reserve on Tuesday and subsequently placed him on waivers for the purpose of assignment to AHL Providence. Regula has yet to play this season after sustaining a knee injury over the offseason. The setback held him out of the entirety of Boston’s training camp and preseason schedule and earned him a non-roster designation when the regular season began.
Alec Regula’s Early Career
Regula was a third-round draft pick by Detroit in 2018 and has played 22 career NHL regular-season games with one goal. Last season with Providence, Regula registered four goals and 22 assists in 55 games and signed a one-year, two-way deal with Boston in the offseason.
