The Boston Bruins are in the midst of a retooling with a limited prospect pool that many hockey pundits rank last in the NHL. Now more than ever, the Bruins need to draft well and, even more importantly, develop their young players to eventually contribute in the league. This summer, three past draft selections will become eligible to sign an NHL entry-level contract with the team, but time is running out on those decisions. One of those three has signed with the Bruins’ AHL affiliate Providence Bruins.
Bruins’ 2021 seventh-round draft pick, defenseman Ty Gallagher, just finished his fourth season of NCAA hockey with Colorado College and signed a two-year AHL contract with Providence with a Professional Tryout. The blueliner turned his NCAA career around after a challenging fourth season at Boston University, becoming one of college hockey’s top players during the 2024-25 season. Gallagher ranked 11th in the Hobey Baker Award voting for best collegiate player.
A decision had to be made to sign Gallagher to a contract by August 15. In college, Gallagher registered 68 career points, including 26 in 37 games in 2024-25. There is still an uphill climb for a player who is drafted in the seventh round of an NHL Draft, but Gallagher has blossomed late in his career and seems to a player that Boston could develop.
At 22 years old, Gallagher joins the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League on a Professional Tryout and continues his development as a right-shot defenseman as the Baby Bruins prepare for a potential playoff run.
