
Bruins Captain Brad Marchand left in the first period of the Bruins game against the Pittsburgh Penguins this afternoon after an awkward collision with Penguins defenseman P.O. Joseph at 14:08 of the first period.
Marchand was skating into the corner to retrieve a puck when Joseph engaged, and Joseph’s stick got into Marchand’s left skate, which caused the Bruins’ Left Wing to lose his balance as Joseph finished his check. Marchand was down for several minutes and needed to be helped to the bench and then to the dressing room. There is no word at this time from the Bruins on Marchand’s status going forward. Marchand had played only 2 minutes and 18 seconds before he was hurt
The Bruins were on the power play when the Marchand injury occurred and were able to score after it. Mason Lohrei snuck in from the left point and sniped a wrister off the far post and in to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead, which they held at the end of the first period.
P.O. Joseph was hit later in the first period by Mark Kastelic along the boards in the same corner where Marchand was injured. and was slow to get up and did not return in the first period. Joseph will not return to the game. The Bruins targeted Joseph after the tussle with Marchand.
