Opening the scoring and giving Tampa Bay the 1-0 lead early into the first period – Erik Cernak scored his first goal of the season. Cernak struck a wrist shot from the right circle at the top and the puck slid through Linus Ullmark’s pads, over the goal line.
Nikita Kucherov struck early in the middle frame with his 34th goal of the season on the power play. Kucherov fired a one-timer coming from a tight angle below the right circle that had gotten right past Linus Ullmark. Cutting it 2-1 soon after Kucherov’s goal, Charlie McAvoy beats Andrei Vasilevskiy from the right point with a one-timer through traffic. James Van Riemsdyk tied it up 2-2 later into the second period. Van Riemsdyk poked in the rebound of Brad Marchand’s shot that came from the right circle.
The 2-2 tie remained throughout both the third period and overtime… the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins head into a shootout.
Brayden Point scored the lone goal in the shootout… Andrei Vasilevskiy was able to stop all three attempts by Jake DeBrusk, Charlie Coyle, and David Pastrnak.
David Pastrnak on the Bruins’ 3-2 shootout loss against Tampa Bay: “We were much better, to our standards and playing the way we know we can. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get the dub. That’s the way it goes sometimes.”
Brad Marchand on the Bruins’ 3-2 loss: “For me not being a center man, I’m really just trying to win it anywhere in a position to get it back – If we play like that every night, we’re going to give ourselves an opportunity to win most games… Their goalie played really well and made some big saves. We have to dial it in a little bit on the power play and be a threat late in the game.”
Brayden Point on the Lightning’s win and his goal in the shootout: “Just more of an attention to detail, that was the focus going in. I thought for parts of the games we did that. It did enough to win the game and I thought PK was really big for us tonight,” – “You got an idea. A move or two in your head, mostly just shooter deke. I just went with the deke and he made a good save on it. It’s kind of unfortunate, fortunate for me that he kind of banked it in his own net. A move and hope it works the net hard.”
