Breaking: Dallas Stars Acquire Mikko Rantanen from Carolina Hurricanes

The Dallas Stars are acquiring Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes. The big name on all the trade deadline boards has been traded to Dallas. The basis of the return for the Carolina Hurricanes is forward Logan Stankoven, a 2026 first-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2026 third-round pick, and a 2027 third-round pick. The deal was set last night. The Stars and Rantanen agreed on an extension after talks stalled last night. The extension is reportedly eight years with a $12 million AAV.

Mikko Rantanen

Rantanen is in his tenth season. The Colorado Avalanche drafted him with the tenth overall pick in the 2015 draft. He played in 619 games with Colorado recording 681 points. Mikko Rantanen scored 287 goals and added 394 assists. He had a +90 career with Colorado and added 247 power-play points on 100 power-play goals. The Avalanche dealt Mikko Rantanen to Carolina in a shocking three-team deal earlier this season. In 12 games since joining the Hurricanes, he has six points on two goals and four assists. Rantanen is a minus-two and has two power-play points on a goal and an assist. In 631 career games, he has 687 points on 189 goals and 398 assists. He is a career +88 and has 249 power-play points on 101 power-play goals. The Dallas Stars get a big-name player to go on their top line.

Logan Stankoven

Stankoven is in his second season all with Dallas who drafted him 47th overall in the 2021 draft. Last season in 24 games he had 14 points on six goals and eight assists. He was a plus-ten and had two power play points with one coming on a goal. This season in 59 games he has 29 points on nine goals and 20 assists. Stankoven is a plus-two and has six power-play points with one of those coming via a goal.
