BREAKING: Sean Couturier Named Captain of the Philadelphia Flyers

Sean Couturier has been named the 20th captain in franchise history, the Philadelphia Flyers announced through their social media channels at 7:15 p.m.

During the 2023-2024 season, Couturier played 50 games this season, putting up 11 goals and 22 assists, totaling 33 points.

This decision comes after Couturier has taken strides this season after playing 29 games during the 2020-2021 season and missing the 2021-2022 season due to a back injury. When Couturier is at his best and playing to his strength of being a two-way player, the team is at its best.

Alternate Captains

Additionally, Travis Konecny has been named an alternate captain, and Scott Laughton is confirmed to be keeping his status as an alternate captain as well.

All three players have played crucial roles in the Flyers’ sustaining third place in the Metropolitan Division. Last season, Philadelphia finished with 75 points, 31 wins, and in seventh place in the Metro. Currently, the Flyers have 64 points and 29 wins.

Konecny has 25 goals and 24 assists, totaling 49 points in 54 games played. Laughton has 7 goals and 16 assists, totaling 23 points in 54 games played.

Flyers fans will surely be watching in anticipation to see their new captain. The position has been vacant since former Captain Claude Giroux was traded to the Florida Panthers on March 19, 2022. Giroux was the longest-tenured captain in Flyers history, holding the position for nine years.

The new leadership group will make their debut tomorrow at the Maple Leafs at 7 p.m.
