One of the top free agents is off the board, but he won’t have a new home.
The Vancouver Canucks and Brock Boeser have agreed to terms on a seven-year contract extension carrying an average annual value of $7,250,000.
At the time of writing, there have been no reported trade or movement clauses in Boeser’s seven-year contract.
Boeser, 28, was set to be one of the most sought-after wingers available after Mitch Marner and a ton of other free agents extended with their team yesterday.
The former 23rd overall draft selection in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft will continue his tenure with the team that drafted him. In his nine seasons with Boeser, he’s posted 434 points (204G, 230A) in 554 career games. He’s added 23 points (11G, 12A) in 29 playoff games, all with the Canucks.
The winger from Burnsville, Minnesota, has been a key piece of the Canucks top six, and retaining him shows a step in the right direction amidst the many changes the Canucks have undergone in the past year.
Boeser is now two seasons removed from a career-high 73-point (40G, 33A) season. He posted 50 points (25G, 25A) in 75 games for the Canucks in 2024-25.
With Boeser now off the board, this opens the door for teams to take a stronger run at the top available forward, Nikolaj Ehlers. One has to wonder if Boeser’s contract is a slight comparable given similar point production from the two players.
Vancouver has now extended Thatcher Demko, Conor Garland, and Brock Boeser today. It is to be wondered if they will make any more moves.
