On Monday, the Boston Bruins announced a multi-year extension for General Manager Don Sweeney. Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs said i. A statement, “under [Sweeney’s] management, the Boston Bruins have been one of the winningest franchises in the league and a perennial playoff contender year in and year out.”
The Bruins have made the playoffs yearly since Sweeney was named GM in 2015. The Harvard graduate won General Manager of the Year in 2018-19 when the Bruins reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing to St. Louis in Seven games.
After a seven-game first-round loss to the Carolina Hurricanes this past season, Sweeney fired Head Coach Bruce Cassidy and is now interviewing candidates to lead the team in the 2022-23 season. Along with replacing Cassidy, who has since been hired as head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights, Sweeney is also faced with drafting without a first-round pick and possibly signing center Patrice Bergeron to a one-year deal.
Due to rehabilitation after surgery, the Bruins will begin without defenseman Charlie McAvoy and left-wing Brad Marchand. Both could miss the first couple of months of the season. Leading goal scorer David Pastrnak’s new contract is also on the table for Sweeney after this season.
