NHL rosters need to be salary cap compliant by 5 pm Monday night as the regular season approaches, and the Boston Bruins have had to make some difficult decisions with young players proving their worth and a logjam of bottom-six forwards. Recently, the Bruins had to place forward AJ Greer on waivers with the emergence of Johnny Beecher as a viable fourth-line center candidate. General Manager Don Sweeney was hoping that the 26-year-old would make it through the process and head to Providence of the American Hockey League to start the season. Unfortunately, they did not happen.
Monday afternoon, the Calgary Flames claimed Greer off waivers, and the 6-foot-3, 207-pound winger will head to the Pacific Division. This will be the fourth team for Greer after being drafted in 2015 in the second round by the Colorado Avalanche. The former Boston University star played 61 games with Boston last season, scoring five goals with seven assists and 114 penalty minutes. The left-shot forward played 9:07 of average ice time. In 108 career games, Greer has seven goals with 13 assists and has yet to play in a playoff game.
Greer was signed as a free agent on July 13, 2022 by Boston. The Juliette, Quebec native will now compete for a spot on the Flames NHL roster. The Bruins still have to make a decision on whether to keep forward Danton Heinen, who is in camp on a Professional Tryout Offer (PTO).
