Trevor Kuntar was drafted in the third round with the 89th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins after finishing in the top ten in the USHL in scoring with the Youngstown Phantoms as an assistant captain that season with 53 points in 44 games which earned him a second-team All-Star selection. Kuntar would commit to Boston College and scored six goals with four assists in 23 games as a freshman. The 6-foot, 200-pound forward showed a high-end wrist shot and an ability to be hard to play against with a grinding, hardworking style. The Williamsville, New York native’s game seemed fit for the NHL down the road.
Kuntar turned heads at Bruins Development Camp in August of 2021 with a highlight reel goal and other noteworthy play. The projections for the stocky forward are a solid bottom-six NHL player. At BC, Kuntar has played with other Bruins prospects, Andre Gasseau and Oskar Jellvik, which has created a buzz within the organization. This past season as a junior, the left-shot forward scored 13 goals with 16 assists in 34 games. There has been a steady improvement from Kuntar, and the Bruins and their fans should be optimistic.
On March 29, 2023, the Bruins signed Kuntar to a two-year entry-level contract with a salary cap hit of $867,500. The Eagles’ assistant captain can return to Boston College or join the Providence Bruins this season in the American Hockey League, which is the probable course of action. Mark Divver reported this week that Kuntar will attend this summer’s development camp from July 3-7 but will not participate due to off-season elbow surgery.
The Bruins are hopeful that their former third-round pick will be able to play in training camp in September. Kuntar will be a welcome addition to the Providence Bruins roster and could even be an option during the season for the parent club. Kuntar turned 22 years old on June 22 and brings a mature game to the Bruins organization.
