The Boston Bruins have some promising prospects that were drafted in the lower rounds of recent NHL Drafts. Riley Duran is having a successful career at Providence College after being drafted in the sixth round in 2020. Former 2021 seventh-round pick Andre Gasseau is a freshman at Boston College playing with fellow Bruins prospects Oscar Jellvik and Trevor Kuntar. And currently, at Boston University, defenseman Ty Gallagher is flourishing during his sophomore season with the Terriers. The other seventh-round pick for Boston in 2021 made the Hockey East All-Rookie Team last season and has added another accolade to his resume.
Gallagher was named Hockey East Army ROTC Defender of The Month in January after registering three goals and five assists in eight games. The Clarkson, Michigan native scored one game-winning goal and had a plus-8 rating as the Terriers went 7-1-0 during the month to take over first place in Hockey East. Boston University is fifth in the country at 20-9-0 this year.
The 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman has totaled three goals and 13 assists with a plus 13 rating overall. Gallagher has three goals and four assists in his last ten games with a plus 5. The scout on Gallagher entering the draft by eliteprospects.com was “Not one to pass up an opportunity to shoot, Gallagher’s Gatling gun mentality makes him a constant threat. When Gallagher takes his finger off the trigger, he shows deceptive playmaking skill with look-off passes. He identifies teammates in scoring position, and if the lane’s open, he usually connects.” Gallagher’s play recently has confirmed this evaluation as his offensive game continues to improve.
Gallagher was a member of the US-18 National Team in 2020-21 and registered 14 goals and 13 assists in 48 games. The right-shot defenseman played in the World Junior Championships that season and scored three goals in five tournament games. Last season at BU, Gallagher scored five goals with eleven assists.
The 19-year-old competed in two Bruins’ rookie camps and will certainly participate again this summer. It is yet to be determined if Gallagher will return to Boston University for his junior season. The blue liner is currently unsigned and will be a candidate to sign with the Bruins when the current collegiate season ends. The Bruins have had success with Boston University defensemen with current NHL players Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk. For now, Ty Gallagher is trending toward being a good value pick in the seventh round and will be a player to watch in the upcoming Hockey East Tournament.
