The Boston Bruins are focused on developing young talent as the new core is taking over the roster. Matt Poitras and Johnny Beecher have already taken on roles, and the team has benefited early on this season. Mason Lohrei, Fabian Lysell, Georgii Merkulov, and Brandon Bussi seem to be on the cusp of joining the club soon. The once-barren prospect pool in Boston is much improved, and now the Bruins have invested in another low-round pick.
On Wednesday, the team announced the signing of 2022 seventh-round draft pick Jackson Edward to a three-year, entry-level contract with an annual salary cap hit of $860,000. Edward is a 19-year-old defenseman who is currently playing for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. In 10 games this season, Edward has two goals and four assists. But it’s his style of play that will endear him to Bruins fans. Edward plays a physical, almost violent game and will stack up the penalty minutes.
Last season, the 6-foot-2 Edward earned 110 penalty minutes and currently has ten this season. Edward’s offensive game has made strides. During the 2022-23 season, the Newmarket, Ontario native collected 25 points last season but is on track to shatter that during this campaign.
Edward participated in the Bruins development camp and made a good impression in the training camp that helped his cause. Now, the Bruins have committed three more years to the left-shot defenseman.
