Tony DeAngelo was a prominent figure this past season for the Carolina Hurricanes. The defenseman registered 10-41-51 in 64 games and finished the postseason with 1-9-10 in 14 games as the New York Rangers eliminated the Canes in the second round.
The former first-round pick is also known for his edgy play and demeanor. Ironically the Rangers were his former club, and the team elected to move on from the New Jersey native after an altercation with teammate Alexandar Georgiev in January of 2021. DeAngelo called out Bruins fans in the first round against Boston this postseason, saying that the Hurricanes play in a “much louder building.”
Well, now it seems that his current team is ready to move on as well. The Hurricanes have given the restricted free-agent permission to talk to other teams about a new contract, per Elliotte Friedman. The former 19th overall pick in 2014 should be a rather hot commodity as a solid offensive defenseman with a pest-like mentality. Now it will be up to DeAngelo’s agent to come up with a possible suitor.
The 26-year-old right-shot defenseman played with a cap hit of $4.8 million and looks to be getting a raise heading into next season. The Canes could find a trade partner and deal DeAngelo. The team is also rumored to be moving on from restricted free-agent forward Martin Necas and unrestricted free-agent center Vincent Trocheck. One team to watch for in regards to Tony DeAngelo? His hometown New Jersey Devils, with $25 million of cap space, PK Subban is probably moving on as an unrestricted free agent, and four other defensemen on the last year of their contracts.
