Like many other NHL teams, the Carolina Hurricanes have been hit hard by injuries despite their 12-4-0 record to start the 2024-2025 season. In the past several days, three of the organization’s star players have either missed games due to a variety of injuries and return times.
Frederik Andersen
Frederik Andersen sustained a lower-body injury during a game against the Seattle Kraken in late October. On Friday afternoon, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour told media that surgery “may be a possibility.”
Injuries have been one of the Danish goaltender’s biggest issues since the start of his career. Last season, Andersen was out from November until March due to blood clotting, particularly deep-vein thrombosis resulting in pulmonary embolisms, which the team publicly revealed last January. He was a Masterson Trophy finalist last season. (The award went to Utah’s Connor Ingram.) Over the summer, Andersen helped lead Denmark’s men’s hockey team to a 2026 Winter Olympics bid, confirming the country a spot.
This season is Andersen’s last on his current contract with the Hurricanes.
Seth Jarvis
The 22-year-old star forward is no stranger to injuries.
Last season, Jarvis played a majority of the Stanley Cup playoffs while injured. During the first round against the New York Islanders, Jarvis played with a broken finger. He later told media that he’d played a majority of the 2023-2024 regular season on a torn labrum and rotator cuff. During his first availability after his groundbreaking eight-year contract, Jarvis told local media that he did not need any surgery during the offseason.
He sustained an upper-body injury during a loss against the Colorado Avalanche on November 9.
Jarvis was officially placed on the Injured Reserve (IR) on Saturday afternoon. He is eligible to return to play on November 17 at the earliest.
Pyotr Kochetkov
The 25-year-old Russian goaltender has been a bright spot for the Hurricanes during the past two seasons. A fan-favorite, Kochetkov filled in for Andersen during the majority of the 2023-2024 regular season. The duo began the season rotating in between games as the starting goaltender, continuing the lineup since Andersen’s return.
Images of Kochetkov’s finger in a brace made the rounds on social media throughout last week, indicating that he could’ve been playing on a possible broken finger. During Wednesday night’s game against the Utah Hockey Club, Kochetkov was injured during the second period’s play after defenseman Sean Walker crashed into him and the net. He was pulled from the game during the third period, with backup Spencer Martin finishing in a 4-1 loss. Kochetkov has been day-to-day and was not active on Saturday’s 4-0 win against the Ottawa Senators.
Brind’Amour announced that Kochetkov is back on the roster, and will be starting tonight’s game against the St. Louis Blues in Raleigh.
