Carolina Hurricanes Linked to Former Defenseman

The Carolina Hurricanes have been one of the best teams in the NHL this season, as they sit at the top of the Metropolitan Division and are second in the NHL with a 30-9-8 record and 68 points. It has been a dominating season for a team that seems to have it all after making a handful of moves in the offseason. A genuine contender to make a deep playoff run this year, the Hurricanes will look to go all in at the March 3rd trade deadline.

One name that the Hurricanes have been linked to is Montreal Canadiens defenseman, Joel Edmundson. The 29-year-old veteran has been heavily talked about in the rumor mill as the Canadiens are rebuilding and could fetch a solid return for their top defenseman.

Edmundson is a familiar face in Carolina as he spent the 2019-2020 season on their roster. Now it seems a reunion between the two is possible, as Edmundson would be a perfect addition to this team for a playoff run. Edmundson is an effective defensive defenseman who plays a very physical game, but during his one year in Carolina, he did set career highs in goals (7), assists (13), and points (20).

The Hurricanes can use some help on the left side, and Edmundson checks a lot of boxes if they were to acquire him. He would be the perfect fit on either their second or bottom pairing, providing a physical game this team will need during a playoff run.

Edmundson wouldn’t just be a rental for the Hurricanes either, as he does have one year left on his contract after this season, carrying a $3.5 million cap hit.

It will be a wait-and-see situation for the Hurricanes and Edmundson, as anything can happen over these next five weeks. One thing is for sure Carolina will be looking to add to their already talented roster as this year’s competition in the Eastern Conference is as strong as ever.
