Winnipeg Jets 2021 18th overall draft selection Chaz Lucius has retired from professional hockey after a diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).
The 21-year-old forward has had a rough go dealing with injuries throughout his time in hockey. It seemed he’d turned a corner, becoming an every-game player with the Jets’ AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. He played his final game against the Iowa Wild on February 9th and did not return to the lineup after this game.
Head coach Mark Morrison provided periodic updates to the media, and about five days after Lucius’ final game, the media was informed that Lucius was dealing with a medical condition and not an injury.
Today, Chaz Lucius, through his representatives at Newport Sports, released a statement officially announced his retirement after his diagnosis of EDS.
Lucius is a tremendous talent on the ice who had a really rough go with injuries. When Lucius was playing, you could see just how good he was. He possesses a great shot and uses his quick release to make himself a threat anywhere on the ice.
Regardless, it would not have been an easy decision for the young forward.
The Winnipeg Jets released the following statement about Lucius’ retirement:
“After much discussion and consultation with Chaz, his representatives, and medical professionals, the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club fully supports his difficult decision to retire. Chaz’s condition and struggles with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) put him at risk of injury if he continues to play at the professional level, so we understand his choice. We wish Chaz all the best in his efforts to be an advocate for those dealing with EDS and hope for a bright future in front of him.” via the Winnipeg Jets
It’s always unfortunate when a player’s career ends early, but health is the most important thing.
Tough news for a really nice guy. All the best to Chaz in whatever he pursues next.
