Eighteen-year-old freshman forward Sacha Boisvert is having an impressive start to the season with the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round (18th overall) of the 2024 NHL Draft, the Trois-Rivières, QC native, is making a name for himself in the NCHC, which is widely regarded as the best conference in college hockey. As of this week, the conference features six top 20 teams: #4 Denver, #6 Western Michigan, #9 St. Cloud State, #10 Colorado College, #16 North Dakota, and #19 Arizona State. Any team can win this conference come March, with the Fighting Hawks certainly among the top contenders.
Through 17 games this season, Boisvert has accumulated 15 points, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists, making him the leading scorer for the #16 ranked Fighting Hawks. In November, he was named the NCHC Rookie of the Month, having recorded five goals and eight points over ten games during that stretch. His goal and point totals led all NCHC freshmen.
Last weekend, I covered the series between the Miami University (OH) RedHawks and the North Dakota Fighting Hawks at Goggin Ice Center in Oxford, Ohio. On paper, the Fighting Hawks were the favorites, but the RedHawks put up a strong fight in both games. In game one, North Dakota rallied from a 4-2 deficit with five minutes remaining in the third period, ultimately winning 5-4 in the final minute of regulation. The winning goal was scored by Sacha Boisvert, who fired a one-timer past Miami goaltender Bruno Bruveris, stunning everyone at Goggin Ice Center.
Throughout the series against the RedHawks, Boisvert contributed three points, netting the game-winning goal on Friday, assisting on another, and providing an assist in a 4-2 victory on Saturday night. His performance made him one of the standout players on the ice.
Several aspects of his game caught my attention, particularly his elite passing on the rush and his powerful one-timer in tight. He also has strong skills in front of the net, along with his elite passing abilities (two skills that work hand-in-hand). Overall, the Blackhawks have a speedy forward in Boisvert, who possesses high potential and will continue to develop his skills at a great program in the University of North Dakota. Boisvert is expected to play a crucial role for the Fighting Hawks as they aim to be a contender in the NCHC throughout the season and potentially beyond come March/April.
