It has been an up-and-down season for the Montreal Canadiens organization as they once again find themselves hovering around the bottom of the Atlantic Division. The Habs currently sit last in the division with a 19-24-3 record and 41 points. While it’s a lost season for the Canadiens, they had some bright spots, with Cole Caufield being the brightest.
In his second season in the league, Caufield continued to build off the strong rookie season that saw him score 23 goals and 20 assists for 43 points in 67 games. It was a great start to a bright career for the 22-year-old 15th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.
Unfortunately, Caulfield’s career year has ended as he suffered a season-ending injury to his right shoulder and will undergo surgery soon. There is no timetable set for his recovery, as that will be issued following the medical procedures.
Before suffering the shoulder injury, Caufield scored 26 goals and tallied ten assists for 36 points. His 26 goals are tied for 11th best in the NHL, as he was on pace to have the first 30-goal campaign of his career.
In a corresponding move, the Canadiens recalled forward Alex Belzile from the AHL’s Laval Rocket.
Montreal fans will have to wait until the 2023-24 season to see Caufield return to the ice and continue his dominant scoring ways.
