On Wednesday afternoon, September 4, the Columbus Blue Jackets met with media members and gave some statements regarding the recent tragedy involving brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. General Manager Don Waddell, Captain Boone Jenner, Alternate Captains Erik Gudbranson, Zach Werenski, and Sean Kuraly spoke to the media.

Don Waddell started the press conference off by thanking various organizations and fans around the world who have been outpouring their love and support for the Gaudreau family.

“The outpouring of love for John and Matthew has been remarkable, not only among the NHL family but from our local sports community, as well as teams and leagues around the world. From New Jersey to Boston, Calgary to Columbus, and everywhere in between have inspired us with the expressions of love and support. I know that means the world to the Gaudreau family, and it means the world to our organization as well. Thank you.”

Waddell then spoke about his personal experience with Johnny Gaudreau through USA Hockey from World Juniors to other national teams.

“Johnny was always very proud to put on that USA hockey jersey.”

He went on to speak about questions about how the team will move forward without Gaudreau.

“While there’s a huge hole in our lineup there is even a larger one in our hearts. I know there are questions related to our team and how we’re going to move forward without Johnny and the impact his loss will have on our lineup. Those questions will be for another day. Our immediate focus is on supporting the Gaudreau family and supporting each other as we continue to grieve the loss of Johnny and Matthew”

Next to speak was Blue Jacket’s team captain, Boone Jenner. After offering his condolences, he spoke about his personal experiences with Johnny and the bond he saw the brothers share.

“Whenever you met one Gaudreau, it wasn’t long after you were meeting another, and then receiving a bottle of one of Guy’s homemade maple syrup.”

“One thing I admired, was that John never forgot where he came from.”

Listening to him speak, it’s clear how much John meant to Boone and the team. He spoke on the positive impact Johnny had, the love that he and the team have for him, and the joy that he had both on and off the ice.

“The joy I was so lucky to witness. John was a close friend and someone I felt I’ve known for a lifetime.”

“His positive energy day in and day out was infectious when you’re around him”

Next to speak was Erik Gudbranson. He had played a season with Johnny for the Calgary Flames before both players signed with Columbus for the 2022-23 season.

He also spoke on the close bond between Matthew and John and how it reminded him of his relationships with his siblings. From their first beer together after Erik moved to Calgary, to being late to practice, Erik spoke about his and Johnny’s relationship.

“Your unique way of driving me crazy only brought me closer. There was always a method to the madness. Our rides to the rink and knowing my stress level for punctuality, you would walk out 7 minutes minutes late. Trying to look professional at dinner the night before a game wearing a hoodie and a toque and 10-year-old sweatpants. You were one of a kind and we loved you and we still do.”

Erik went on to talk about how great of a father Johnny was, the love he showed his family, and how it has and will continue to inspire him. Finally, Gudbranson had a message he wanted to share,

“And one final point to everyone. If you think about driving after a few beers or a fun night, please, please, please do not. Find a way home. Thank you.”

Zach Werenski then took to the podium to give his statements. After his condolences, he spoke about the excitement John created when he signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“I’ve been here Columbus for 9 years and I can’t say there’s ever been a day as exciting as John signed here. I remember texting Boone and Eric Robinson when the reports were coming out and we just couldn’t believe it. My dad even drove over and we had a celebratory drink because we were so excited about it.”

That was definitely one of the most exciting times in Blue Jacket’s history. The hype Gaudreau brought even got people who don’t watch hockey to notice the Columbus Blue Jackets. The news transcended the hockey world and outlets all over Ohio were writing about Johnny Hockey.

“I just want to say thank you John for choosing Columbus when other people wouldn’t. You brought so much joy and excitement to this city, I’ve never quite seen anything like it. Something only truly special players can do and that’s what you were.”

Zach then talked about the things about Johnny that he will miss. One thing he mentioned was watching him being an amazing dad and watching Noa, Johnny’s daughter, running to him for a hug after games. Zach also gave a little more insight into Gaudreau and Gudbranson’s relationship with a funny quip,

“I’m even going to miss hearing him call Guddy a donkey, and I’m watching the two of them banter like the brothers that they were”

Sean Kuraly was the last player to speak. He spoke about the love and joy of Johnny and the example he set for others.

“John leaves us a life’s example of love, simplicity, and joy. He expressed that for the masses through hockey, and personally through his relationships, which explains why he was universally adored in all the communities and lives that were lucky enough to enjoy number 13.”

Don Waddell returned to the podium to take questions. He was asked if there have been talks about any tributes or ceremonies for the first home game. Waddell said there is too much grieving right now and that will come at a future period.

Waddell was then asked to speak about the importance of the team coming together and supporting one another. Having dealt with tragedy as a GM in the past here’s what he had to say,

“You know getting a team together, they’re each other’s brothers and these guys will do a tremendous job to help everybody through”

When asked, Waddell said that the whole team would go together to services held for John and Matthew once those plans are finalized.

This unimaginable tragedy has shaken the world. I encourage anyone out there who is feeling down or discouraged to reach out to those around you. If you need an example of love and joy look no further than Johnny and Matthew. Take a note out of their book and make sure your friends and family know they are loved.
