Thirty-seven seconds into the game, on his first shift, Edmonton Oilers star center Connor McDavid was injured in a 6-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.
McDavid was picking up a loose puck along the right-wing boards at the offensive blueline, where he was tripped, toe-picked, and fell, with his left skate hitting the boards awkwardly. It didn’t look serious at the time, but McDavid did not return to the contest.
McDavid will not travel with the team to Nashville, where the Oilers play the Predators on Halloween night. Head Coach Kris Knoblauch was asked about McDavid after the game, “He’s going to go back to Edmonton. He’s going to get evaluated, and I’ll have something later tomorrow.”
The beginning of the season hasn’t been great for the Oilers. Edmonton has limped out of the gate to a 4-5-1 start, but missing their franchise superstar for any length of time would turn a bad start into a nightmare.
