The Edmonton Oilers announced that Connor McDavid will be out one to two weeks with an upper-body injury that was sustained during the final five minutes of the third period in Saturday’s overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets. There is no doubt that the injury to McDavid is a massive blow to the Oilers moving forward, but it couldn’t have come at a worse time, as the Heritage Classic takes place next Sunday night at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. So far this season, McDavid has two goals and six assists for eight points in five games and is coming off a year where he put up 64 goals and would leave the Music City with a handful of awards. Edmonton is one of many teams that is right up against the cap, and with McDavid not being eligible for IR, Adam Erne, the only healthy scratch for the Oilers on Saturday night, will likely draw into the lineup. Erne began camp on a PTO with the Oilers and played well enough to earn himself a one-year deal at the league minimum and has played in three games so far this season with the Oilers but has yet to find his way onto the scoresheet. The Oilers will look for Leon Draisaitl to take on the bulk of the weight with McDavid out of the lineup; the 27-year-old winger has four goals and five assists for nine points in five games this season.
